In 1984, we organized a two-day symposium on retinal degenerations as part of the biennial meeting of the VI International Society for Eye Research, held in Alicante, Spain. The success of this first meeting led to the second held, two years later in Sendai, Japan, organized as a satellite of the VII ISER. We were fortunate that these meetings began at a time of vigorous research activity in the area of retinal degenerations, thanks to the financial support of the Retinitis Pigmentosa Foundation and the strong encouragement of its scientific director, Dr. Alan Laties. Significant advances were made so that every two years scientists were eager to meet to share their findings. The programs included presentations by both basic and clinical researchers with ample time for informal discussions in a relaxed atmos­ phere. Many investigators met for the first time at these symposia and a number of fruitful collaborations were established. This book contains the proceedings of the VI International Symposium on Retinal Degenerations held November 6-10, 1994, in Jerusalem. As with the other meetings, some new areas were covered. One session was devoted to apoptosis, an important process involved in cell death in inherited retinal degenerations. Another session was on invertebrate photoreceptors, where numerous mutations have now been identified that lead to altered function or degeneration of the retina. All participants were invited to submit chapters and most complied. We thank them for their contributions.

Degenerative Retinal Diseases

Since 1984, we have organized Satellite Symposia on Retinal Degenerations that are held in conjunction with the biennial International Congress of Eye Research. The timing and location of our Retinal Degeneration Symposia have all owed scientists and clinicians from around the world to convene and present their exciting new findings. The symposia have been arranged to allow ample time for discussions and one-on-one interactions in a relaxed atmos­ phere, where international friendships and collaborations could be established. The II International Symposium (also known as the Sendai Symposium on Retinal Degeneration) was held in 1986 in Sendai, Japan, on the occasion of the retirement of Kat­ suyoshi Mizuno as Professor and Chairman of Ophthalmology at Tohoku Medical SchooL On October 5-9, 1996, we returned to Sendai, where the VII International Symposium was held at the Miyagi Zao resort hotel in the beautiful Mt. Zao region of northern Japan. This meeting was held on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of Makoto Tarnai as Pro­ fessor and Chairman of Ophthalmology at Tohoku Medical School. One afternoon of the meeting contained a special symposium in honor of Professor Tarnai, who has signifi­ cantly elevated the level and intensity of research on retinal degenerations at his university and in Japan during this past decade.

Tradi tionally, the International lTV - Conferences on Biomate­ rials are focussing on problems in Biomedical Engineering, problems, which are still unsolved, of main interest, and which are of interdisciplinary character. In 1983, the Division of Biomedical Engineering of the Institute of Textile Technology and Chemical Engineering, Denkendorf, started wi th a conference about the use of polyurethanes in biomedicine. Three years later,. in 1986, progress in development and use of polyurethanes was selected as conference topic. It had to be realized that degradation problems were still dominating the discussions. The main discussion topics were: What are the causes for the degradation? How can one prevent them? What are the degradation products, and do they affect the human body? How can one simu­ late the degradation? How can one accelerate the in vitro tests and how can the results predict the in vivo behaviour of the material? How do in vitro tests correlate with animal tests and the behaviour in the human body? At the third conference in 1989, the speakers focused on the use of textiles in medicine. Again the problem of degradation was discussed intensively and demonstrated by the failure of textile implants, the degradation of aramide polymers or the degradation of resorbable suture materials. The examples make clear, that degradation may be a desired or undesired property of an implant.

Delay and Uncertainty in Human Balancing Tasks (Lecture Notes on Mathematical Modelling in the Life Sciences)

This book demonstrates how delay differential equations (DDEs) can be used to compliment the laboratory investigation of human balancing tasks. This approach is made accessible to non-specialists by comparing mathematical predictions and experimental observations. For example, the observation that a longer pole is easier to balance on a fingertip than a shorter one demonstrates the essential role played by a time delay in the balance control mechanism. Another balancing task considered is postural sway during quiet standing. With the inverted pendulum as the driver and the feedback control depending on state variables or on an internal model, the feedback can be identified by determining a critical pendulum length and/or a critical delay. This approach is used to identify the nature of the feedback for the pole balancing and postural sway examples. Motivated by the question of how the nervous system deals with these feedback control challenges, there is a discussion of ‘’microchaotic’’ fluctuations in balance control and how robust control can be achieved in the face of uncertainties in the estimation of control parameters. The final chapter suggests some topics for future research.Each chapter includes an abstract and a point-by-point summary of the main concepts that have been established. A particularly useful numerical integration method for the DDEs that arise in balance control is semi-discretization. This method is described and a MATLAB template is provided.This book will be a useful source for anyone studying balance in humans, other bipedal organisms and humanoid robots. Much of the material has been used by the authors to teach senior undergraduates in computational neuroscience and students in bio-systems, biomedical, mechanical and neural engineering.

Delay Controlled Partial Synchronization in Complex Networks (Springer Theses)

The focus of this thesis are synchronization phenomena in networks and their intrinsic control through time delay, which is ubiquitous in real-world systems ranging from physics and acoustics to neuroscience and engineering. We encounter synchronization everywhere and it can be either a helpful or a detrimental mechanism. In the first part, after a survey of complex nonlinear systems and networks, we show that a seemingly simple system of two organ pipes gives birth to complex bifurcation and synchronization scenarios. Going from a 2-oscillator system to a ring of oscillators, we encounter the intriguing phenomenon of chimera states which are partial synchrony patterns with coexisting domains of synchronized and desynchronized dynamics. For more than a decade scientist have tried to solve the puzzle of this spontaneous symmetry-breaking emerging in networks of identical elements. We provide an analysis of initial conditions and extend our model by the addition of time delay and fractal connectivities. In the second part, we investigate partial synchronization patterns in a neuronal network and explain dynamical asymmetry arising from the hemispheric structure of the human brain. A particular focus is on the novel scenario of partial relay synchronization in multiplex networks. Such networks allow for synchronization of the coherent domains of chimera states via a remote layer, whereas the incoherent domains remain desynchronized. The theoretical framework is demonstrated with different generic models.
