Assessing Change in English Second Language Writing Performance

by Khaled Barkaoui Ali Hadidi

This book introduces a new framework for analyzing second language (L2) learners’ written texts. The authors conducted a major study on changes and differences in English L2 learners’ writing performance to advance understanding of the nature of L2 writing development over time, in relation to L2 instruction and testing, and to offer a model that professionals and researchers can use in their own longitudinal and cross-sectional studies of L2 writing development. Grounded in research, data, theory, and technology, this will be a welcome how-to for language test developers, scholars, and graduate students of (L2) writing and assessment.

Assessing Change in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy of Children and Adolescents: Today's Challenge

by Judith Trowell John Tsiantis

This book draws together work from across Europe by leading clinical researchers who have been looking into the effectiveness of psychoanalytic interventions. They are mostly time limited, brief, non-intensive ways of working so are applicable in many settings and can therefore be generalised to other clinical teams. The populations worked with are diverse and often present mainstream services with refractory clinical problems, so an applied psychoanalytic approach is well worth trying, given the evidence presented in this volume. There is in addition an excellent theoretical chapter on the issues of such clinical research from Stephen Shirk which merits consideration by those wishing to evaluate their own work. This book is an important contribution to services for child and adolescent mental health. With increasing family distress and concerns about inadequate parenting, family breakdown and troublesome adolescents, it will help to ensure the full menu of interventions is retained in these times of financial restraint.

Assessing Childhood Psychopathology and Developmental Disabilities (Lecture Notes In Mathematics #Vol. 733)

by Frank Andrasik Johnny L. Matson Michael L. Matson

Not long ago, conducting child assessment was as simple as stating that “the child gets along with others” or “the child lags behind his peers”. Today’s pediatric psychologists and allied professionals, by contrast, know the critical importance of using accurate measures with high predictive quality to identify pathologies early, form precise case conceptualizations, and provide relevant treatment options. Assessing Childhood Psychopathology and Developmental Disabilities provides a wide range of evidence-based methods in an immediately useful presentation from infancy through adolescence. Noted experts offer the most up-to-date findings in the most pressing areas, including: (1) Emerging trends, new technologies, and implementation issues. (2) Interviewing techniques and report writing guidelines. (3) Intelligence testing, neuropsychological assessment, and scaling methods for measuring psychopathology. (4) Assessment of major pathologies, including ADHD, conduct disorder, bipolar disorder, and depression. (5) Developmental disabilities, such as academic problems, the autism spectrum and comorbid pathology, and self-injury. (6) Behavioral medicine, including eating and feeding disorders as well as pain management. This comprehensive volume is an essential resource for the researcher’s library and the clinician’s desk as well as a dependable text for graduate and postgraduate courses in clinical child, developmental, and school psychology. (A companion volume, Treating Childhood Psychopathology and Developmental Disabilities, is also available to ensure greater continuity on the road from assessment to intervention to outcome.)

Assessing Children in the Urban Community

by Barbara L Mercer Tricia Fong Erin Rosenblatt

This book illuminates the process of child psychological assessment in community psychology through discussion, theory, and case studies of collaborative, systemic treatment of children and their parents. "Assessing Children in the Urban Community" presents a semi-structured form of collaborative psychological assessment, designed to help clients gain new insights and make changes in their lives. Traditional psychological assessment focuses on diagnosis and treatment but has been slow to include contextual elements, particularly social and cultural contexts into the assessment process and psychological report. Clients receiving services in a community psychology clinic pay for their treatment through state welfare coverage. They cannot choose their providers, they cannot always determine the length and course of their mental health care, they often do not have access to transportation to begin services, to continue them, or to take advantage of follow-up recommendations. The Therapeutic Assessment model is particularly adaptable to community psychology because it allows maximum interaction in the assessment process and promotes participation and collaboration in an often dis-empowering system. This book will be relevant to clinical psychologists, community psychologists, social workers, family therapists, graduate students in psychology, social work, marriage and family therapists, and counseling programs.

The hope is that they will go on to make a reality of the 'imaginary but not impossible classroom' and make moral judgements and choices in the best interests of children. - Sue Swaffield, Senior Lecturer - Educational Leadership and School Improvement, University of Cambridge, UK Not all education books are worth a tired teacher's spare time. This one is. - Times Educational Supplement, from a review of the first edition Now featuring a brand new foreword by Sue Swaffield, this classic text, Assessing Children's Learning, examines some of the vital questions that teachers and other educators ask themselves as they assess children's learning across the curriculum. The author sets out to offer an alternative to objective, mechanical approaches to assessment; she defines assessment as a process in which teachers look at children's learning, strive to understand it, and then put their understanding to good use in the classroom where children are given both trust and freedom to learn. Throughout the book, teachers are invited to consider the choices they make in the process of assessment, and to acknowledge their right, their responsibility and their power to act in the interests of children. Now part of the Routledge Education Classic Edition Series, this influential, inspiring and timely book will introduce the ideas of Mary Jane Drummond to a new generation of teachers, practitioners and other education professionals.

Assessing Children's Mathematical Knowledge (UK Higher Education OUP Humanities & Social Sciences Education OUP)

by Barry Cooper Mairead Dunne

'this work is highly relevant to the proliferation of accountability measures worldwide'James Scheurich and Douglas FoleyIn many countries, the lives of teachers and children are increasingly dominated by programmes of national testing of mathematics and other subjects. In England, the majority of the items in such tests have set mathematical tasks in every day situations such as 'shopping'. This requires children to make decisions about whether to use or not their own every day knowledge and experience in their problem-solving. Some children are likely to have a better 'feel for this game' than others. Assessing Children's Mathematical Knowledge draws on the analysis of national curriculum test data from more than 600 children of 10-11 and 13-14 years of age, as well as in-depth interviews with 250 of these as they attempt to solve test problems, in order to explore the nature of the difficulties children experience with 'realistic' items. The book shows, by comparing test and interview data, that many children, as a consequence of their confusion over the requirements of 'realistic' test items, fail in tests to demonstrate mathematical knowledge and understanding that they actually possess. The book also explores whether this problem of invalid measurement is equally spread across children from different social backgrounds, and across the sexes. The book will be of interest to academics and teachers studying for advanced degrees in mathematics education, sociology of education and educational assessment.

Assessing Children's Personal And Social Development: Measuring The Unmeasurable?

by Martin Buck Helena Burke Sally Inman

Social and personal development of pupils is an area of growing interest. However, while much has been done in relation to provision for development, there is little available on how teachers might assess the development of pupils, be it spiritual, moral, social or cultural. The contributors also examine how we might accredit such development. With provision for development on the national agenda, this title looks at the repercussions and examines the difficult issues raised by assessment and accreditation - and the problems with which teachers will inevitably be faced.

Assessing Children's Well-Being: A Handbook of Measures

by Sylvie Naar-King Deborah A. Ellis Maureen A. Frey Michele Lee Ondersma

Behavioral medicine has now matured as a field to the point where all recognize that different populations are presented with different issues. Psychological reactions and patterns affect the health and well-being of children, as well as adults, and numerous standardized instruments for the assessment of a variety of areas of children's functioning are currently available. Yet, it can be difficult for practitioners and researchers searching through general compendia of resources for child assessment--which are frequently focused on general techniques rather than specific instruments--to identify the optimal ones to meet their particular needs and to choose among them. This practical and comprehensive reference guide is the first to sort, present, and review all the measures that can be used to evaluate the behavioral, cognitive, and emotional aspects of children's health. It organizes the measures under eight general headings, such as quality of life, adherence, pain management, and patient satisfaction. Each chapter begins with a leading authority's overview of the underlying theoretical construct and any concerns about how to measure it. Descriptions and reviews of relevant instruments follow; these include information on administration, scoring, psychometric properties, and ordering, as well as comments by the instruments' developers.Assessing Children's Well-Being: A Handbook of Measures will be welcomed by all those professionals and scientists who seek to assess and effectively address the complex interactions between physical health and mental health in children.

Assessing China's Naval Power: Technological Innovation, Economic Constraints, and Strategic Implications (Global Power Shift)

by Sarah Kirchberger

This book analyzes the rise of China’s naval power and its possible strategic consequences from a wide variety of perspectives – technological, economic, and geostrategic – while employing a historical-comparative approach throughout. Since naval development requires huge financial resources and mostly takes place within the context of transnational industrial partnerships, this study also consciously adopts an industry perspective. The systemic problems involved in warship production and the associated material, financial, technological, and political requirements currently remain overlooked aspects in the case of China.Drawing on first-hand working experience in the naval shipbuilding industry, the author provides transparent criteria for the evaluation of different naval technologies’ strategic value, which other researchers can draw upon as a basis for further research in such diverse fields as International Security Studies, Naval Warfare Studies, Chinese Studies, and International Relations.
