Psychotherapy In an Age of Neuroscience is a critique of the neuroscience model that dominates contemporary psychiatric practice. It shows that while the neurosciences have made great advances, this line of research has thus far had little application to the care of patients. It criticizes the over-use of psychopharmacological interventions for common mental disorders such as depression, anxiety, and substance use. It examines why many, if not most, psychiatrists are seeing patients for 15-minute "med checks" oriented to current symptoms and DSM criteria, and are not taking the time to become familiar with the lives of their patients. The idea for this book sprang from Geoffrey Cocks' curiosity as to what happened in the new, dynamic field of psychotherapy hi Germany with the advent of Hitler. While traditional views merely asserted that the Nazis destroyed the field of psychotherapy in Germany, a viewpoint justifiably based on the testimony of those in the field who had emigrated from Germany to escape Nazi persecution, Cocks learned that there was more to the story. He looked to several interesting shards of evidence that pointed to the possibility that one could reconstruct a history of morally questionable professional developments in German psychotherapy during the Third Reich.The evidence included: existence of a journal for psychotherapy published continuously from 1928 to 1944; accounts of a psychotherapist who assumed leadership of his colleagues and who was a relative of the powerful Nazi leader Hermann Goring; and a strong psychotherapeutic lobby in German medicine that was intellectually impoverished but apparently not destroyed by the expulsion of the prominent and predominantly Jewish psychoanalytic movement. Non-Jewish psychoanalysts and psychotherapists had in fact pursued their profession under the aegis of the so-called Goring Institute, with substantial support from agencies of the Nazi party, the Reich government, the military, and private business.Much research has been done in the ten years since the first edition of this book was published, hence the need for a second edition. Included is more information on the history of psychotherapy and psychoanalysis in Nazi Germany, on the social history of the Third Reich, and on the history of the professions in Germany. Three new chapters analyze postwar developments and conflicts as well as broader issues of continuity and discontinuity in the history of modern Germany and the West. In addition, the author has reorganized the volume along chronological and narrative lines for greater ease of reading. The Psychotherapy of Schizophrenia

This volume is dedicated to Theodore Lidz and Ruth W. Lidz, as was the conference on the Psychotherapy of Schizophrenia held on April 9 and 10, 1979, at which the materials here published were presented. This 1979 sym­ posium replicated in some respects the one held at Yale University thirty years earlier, at a time when psychotherapy with schizophrenic patients was viewed with much optimism and enthusiasm. Ruth and Ted Lidz contributed to this earlier symposium also, emphasizing in their paper the intense mother-patient bond as a therapeutic issue. Since then, considerable strides have been made in the treatment of schizophrenic patients. The introduction of psychopharmacologic agents, the development of family therapy, and more sophisticated methods in com­ munity-based care for such patients, all have had important impacts. Psychotherapy with schizophrenics as such has remained a rather limited practice, partly because it is difficult and demanding of therapists' time and personal investment, and partly because documenting its effectiveness on a statistically or epidemiologically valid plane has eluded us.

AN OVERVIEW OF THE PSYCHOANALYTIC APPROACH TO THE WAR NEUROSES The survivors of traumatic events have long been known to suffer psychological sequelae. Of all possible stressors, combat is one of the most devastating. Wartime exposes its victim to a myriad of stimuli that are far beyond those of civilized life. The impact that remains can affect generations to come. In recent years there has been a paucity of research on the long­ term effects of battle. Particularly after the recent war there was initially an inclination to minimize the psychological impact of combat. It was only after concerted effort by a few dedicated clini­ cians that formal recognition was granted to the current version of the war neuroses. In the parlance of the day it was called the Post­ traumatic Stress Disorder (Figley, 1978). This phenomenologic diagnosis has been instrumental in bringing the necessary attention to this condition. Its applicability has been tested across a wide range of stressors, from man-made to natural. Few workers in the field now doubt the power of traumatic events to leave a profound impression on the victim. Psychotherapy Process: Current Issues and Future Directions

Whatever else it may be, psychotherapy offers a clear form of human com­ passion channeled through myriad assumptions about the causes and solu­ tions of human distress. There has, of course, been a longstanding debate about whether the psychotherapist is best described (and trained) as an artisan or a scientist. Volumes of scholarly argument have also addressed such themes as the essential ingredients of psychotherapy, the role of tech­ nique, the importance of client characteristics, and the significance of the therapist's personality.
