Gegenüber vielen dieser technischen Mittel, die oft nicht legal verfügbar sind, bestehen erhebliche gesellschaftliche Vorbehalte. Jan-Hendrik Heinrichs und Markus Rüther plädieren bei ihrer ethischen Einschätzung für eine Differenzierung der Perspektive: Die Vorbehalte sind nämlich ihrer Meinung nach nicht geeignet, gesellschaftliche Ächtung oder gar verbindliche Verbote für alle zu begründen. Vielmehr habe die Freiheit zur Selbstgestaltung Vorrang, was jedoch nicht heißt, dass es für manche Bereiche nicht auch klare Regeln geben muss.
