Die 1980 zuerst veröffentlichte Autobiographie "Leben im Widerspruch" beschreibt die einzelnen Etappen dieses Lebensweges, die Schulzeit in Danzig mit seinem polnischen Hinterland, die Studienjahre in Wien, Berlin und Paris und die vielfältige Tätigkeit als akademischer Lehrer in Europa, Amerika und Asien, die Reisen des jungen Studenten in die Länder des Nahen Ostens, die Begegnung mit der Kultur Siziliens, Erfahrungen als Betreuer eines bundesdeutschen Entwicklungshilfeprojektes in Afghanistan und die Auseinandersetzung mit den indianischen Kulturen im Südwesten der USA. Der zweite, bisher unveröffentlichte Text entstammt einer im Nachlass befindlichen unvollendeten Autobiographie, die mehr persönlich gehalten werden sollte und den Charakter von "Erinnerungen" hat. Autobiography of an Androgyne

Autobiography of an Androgyne (1918) is an autobiography by Earl Lind. Accompanied by an introduction by Dr. Alfred W. Herzog, Lind’s autobiography―intended for a clinical audience―has been recognized as a pioneering work in the history of transgender literature. Throughout his life, Lind was forced to justify and defend his existence from puritanical authorities who refused to even recognize the reality of his identity as an androgyne. In the first of his trilogy of autobiographical works, he not only demands recognition, but exposes the denial of his existence as nothing but hatred and fear. “Androgynes have of course existed in all ages of history and among all races. In Greek and Latin authors there are many references to them, but these references are not always understood except by the few scholars who are themselves androgynes or at least passive sexual inverts. […] [T]hese men-women, because misunderstood, have been held in great abomination both in the middle ages and in modern times, but the prejudice against them was not so extreme in antiquity, and a cultured citizen having this nature did not then lose caste on this account.” Situating his own identity within this history of oppression, Lind makes the case for recognizing the presence of androgynes in all human societies. Automatic Imitation

People spontaneously imitate a wide range of different behaviors. The interest in this phenomenon dates back to at least the 18th century when Adam Smith (1759) argued that imitation can be seen as a primitive form of sympathy. Despite the longstanding interest, it was not until the 20th century that different research fields within psychology and neuroscience started empirically investigating this social phenomenon. The Automaticity of Everyday Life: Advances in Social Cognition, Volume X (Advances in Social Cognition Series)

As Skinner argued so pointedly, the more we know about the situational causes of psychological phenomena, the less need we have for postulating internal conscious mediating processes to explain those phenomena. Now, as the purview of social psychology is precisely to discover those situational causes of thinking, feeling, and acting in the real or implied presence of other people, it is hard to escape the forecast that as knowledge progresses regarding social psychological phenomena there will be less of a role played by free will or conscious choice in accounting for them. In other words, because of social psychology's natural focus on the situational determinants of thinking, feeling, and doing, it is inevitable that social psychological phenomena increasingly will be found to be automatic in nature. This 10th book in the series addresses automaticity and how it relates to social behavior. The lead article, written by John Bargh, argues that social psychology phenomena are essentially automatic in nature, as opposed to being mediated by conscious choice or reflection. Bargh maintains that an automatic mental phenomenon is that which occurs reflexively whenever certain triggering conditions are in place; when those conditions are present, the process runs off autonomously, independently of conscious guidance. In his lead article, he focuses on these preconscious automatic processes that can be contrasted with postconscious and goal-dependent forms of automaticity which depend on more than the mere presence of environmental objects or events. Because social psychology, like automaticity theory and research, is also largely concerned with phenomena that occur whenever certain situational features or factors are in place, social psychology phenomena are essentially automatic.
