The transition from socialism experienced by the countries of Eastern and Central Europe during the last decade has been recognised as a profound historical watershed. Moderne Biographien sind vielfach von Offenheit und Multioptionalität geprägt. Individuen sind daher gefordert, ihre Biographien selbstständig zu gestalten und dabei ihre eigenen Präferenzen mit den sozialen Kontexten in Einklang zu bringen. Anhand von 18 biographisch-narrativen Interviews untersucht Patricia Heufers, woran sich Individuen bei der individuellen beruflichen Biographiegestaltung orientieren. Sie rekonstruiert vier Typen beruflicher Orientierung, die im Hinblick auf das Weiterbildungsverhalten und die Relationierung von Privat- und Berufsleben idealtypisch unterschieden werden. Die rekonstruierten Muster biographischen Lernens zeigen, wie es den Interviewten gelingt, die biographische Offenheit durch einen ‚Dreiklang‘ aus individuellen Präferenzen, sozialen Referenzen und der Interdependenz dieser beiden Aspekte zu kanalisieren. Es wird deutlich, dass trotz – oder wegen – einer kaum überschaubaren Optionenvielfalt nur einige wenige berufsbiographische Orientierungsmuster vorliegen.
