Bonetti's Blues: Dundee FC and its Cultural Experiment

by Jim Wilkie

The star Argentiniean striker Claudio Caniggia has described Dundee as 'a football town' and, as the favoured partner of arguably the world's greatest-ever player Diego Maradona, he should know. But why should he care? What was this man doing, plying his trade in Dundee? Dundee Football Club - the Dark Blues - do have a tradition; they have produced a number of outstanding players, won all the major Scottish trophies and, in 1963, reached the semi-final of the European Cup. For the next three decades, however, their story was one of gradual decline - and you can lose a lot of supporters in 30 years. When brothers Peter and Jimmy Marr, local businessmen, took over at Dens Park in 1997, the fans didn't know what to expect. They were a different proposition from their predecessors in that they had experience of running successful amateur and junior football clubs - but while the team performed creditably under Jocky Scott, there were still a number of very average players getting a game and the wider fan base was only inclined to attend a handful of matches during the season. Having battled to get promotion to the Scottish Premier League and build new stands, however, Peter Marr proceeded to make a leap of cultural faith. He knew that quality football was the key to any form of success and that, generally speaking, it could be found on the European continent.Marr originally expressed interest in Ivano Bonetti as a player, but when he discovered that the Italian was also interested in management, decided to embark on a footballing adventure with him. What followed has been one of the most remarkable episodes in recent Scottish football history. In the face of great cynicism and limited resources, Bonetti has assembled a squad of outstanding international talent, with his friend Claudio Caniggia the jewel in the crown. Results have been both good and bad - and sometimes downright weird - but the football has always been consistently entertaining and frequently breathtaking. No Dundee fan will ever forget season 2000-01. In this book Jim Wilkie reviews the tradition of the club and, using key profiles and reports, charts their amazing transformation to Bonetti's Blues.

There he wrote five scrolls describing the "true principles" required for victory in the martial arts and on the battlefield. Instead of relying on religion or theory, Musashi based his writings on his own experience, observation, and reason. The scrolls, published as The Book of Five Rings, have recently gained an international reputation in the business world as a means of resolving differences and achieving success. But their delineation of the psychological strength, rigorous self-control, and practical application necessary for dealing with physical and mental conflict also has a wider relevance and can be usefully applied to all our lives.

With all the experience and gravitas of Jack Nicklaus, and as funny as a pair of Darren Clarke's trousers, The Book of Golf Quotations is the last word for every fan of frolics on the fairway, on the green or at the nineteenth hole.'This game is great, and very strange.' Seve Ballesteros'The best year of my life was when I was eleven. I got straight As, had two recesses a day, and the cutest girlfriend, and won 32 tournaments that year. Bob Hope'There were three things in the world that he held in the smallest esteem - slugs, poets, and caddies with hiccups.' The Book of Joe: Trying Not to Suck at Baseball and Life

by Joe Maddon Tom Verducci

Lessons in baseball enlightenment from three-time MLB Manager of the Year Joe Maddon. No one sees baseball like Joe Maddon. He sees it through his trademark glasses and irrepressible wit. Raised in the &“shot and beer&” town of Hazleton, PA, and forged by 15 years in the minors, Maddon over 19 seasons in Tampa Bay, Chicago, and Anaheim has become one of the most successful, most colorful, and most quoted managers in Major League Baseball. He is a workplace culture expert, having engineered two of the most stunning turnarounds in the past quarter century: taking the Rays from the worst record in baseball one year to the World Series the next and leading the Cubs to their first World Series title in 108 years. Like his teams, Maddon defies convention. He is part strategist, part philosopher, part sports psychologist, and part motivational coach. In THE BOOK OF JOE, Maddon gives readers unique insights into the game, including the tension between art and data, the changing role of managers as front offices gain power, why the honeymoon with the Cubs did not last, and what it&’s like to manage the modern player, including stars such as Shohei Ohtani, Mike Trout, Albert Pujols, Yu Darvish, and Kris Bryant. But you expect even more from a manager who meditates daily, admires Twain, and has only one rule when it comes to a team dress code: &“If you think you look hot, wear it!&” And Maddon delivers. Built on-old school values and new-school methods, his wisdom applies beyond the dugout. His mantras about leadership, mentorship, team building, and communication are meditations on life, not just baseball. Among those mantras are: &“Do simple better.&” &“Try not to suck.&” &“Don&’t ever permit the pressure to exceed the pleasure.&” &“See it with first-time eyes.&” &“Tell me what you think, not what you&’ve heard.&” THE BOOK OF JOE is Maddon at his uniquely holistic best. It is a memoir of a fascinating baseball journey, an insider&’s look at a changing game, and a guidebook on leadership and life.

The Book of Rugby Disasters & Bizarre Records

Luckily most disasters happen to others and this book makes no apologies for taking pleasure in the misfortunes that have befallen rugby players around the world and at all levels of the game. Nor does this book end with the final whistle but, as with the game itself, continues well into the evening where disasters occur with even more alarming frequency and bizarre records are established and broken by a fraternity always prepared to rise to a challenge.

The Book of Snooker Disasters & Bizarre Records

by Steve Davis

Snooker is a game of precision. Under the gaze of television cameras and with thousands of pounds at stake the professionals might claim to perform under demanding conditions. A spot of chalk on the cue ball may be the difference between the victorious spotlight and the obscurity of defeat. Life can be very different at the other end of the scale where keen amateurs learn their game in more adventurous circumstances, where 'home' table advantage is considerable and to play more than once with the same cue is coincidence. The Book of Snooker Disasters and Bizarre Records documents with indecent relish disastrous interruptions to professional play that vary from exploding light bulbs and leaking roofs, to the unwelcome sounds of spectators excessively filled with food or drink. Slanting tables, dead cushions, tight pockets, oval balls and corkscrew cues combine with split trousers and burst braces to make snooker a game that must always be 'played with considerable inventive skill and no less a sense of humour. The book is introduced by six times World Champion Steve Davis, OBE, who remembers some of the flukes and disasters that have punctuated his own career.

Boozing, Betting & Brawling: The Autobiography of Mel Sterland

by Mel Sterland

Boozing, Betting & Brawling is the autobiography of former footballer, Mel Sterland, who played for Sheffield Wednesday, Glasgow Rangers and Leeds United. He was also capped once by England. The book which is co-authored by Sheffield-based journalist, Nick Johnson, opens with Sterland recounting plans to commit suicide after being forced into premature retirement from playing. Following an indifferent start to his career at Sheffield Wednesday, Sterland made his name as a marauding full-back, playing under high-profile managerial trio Jack Charlton, Howard Wilkinson and Ron Atkinson. He made a big-money move to Glasgow Rangers, where he played under another well-known football personality, Graeme Souness. Despite being at Ibrox for only a brief spell, Sterland is fondly remembered by Rangers fans for scoring the goals which helped the Glasgow giants win the first of a record-equalling nine league titles. Following his transfer to Leeds, where he played alongside the likes of Eric Cantona and Gordon Strachan, Sterland won a First Division championship-winner's medal, making him one of only a handful of players to win the league title in both England and Scotland. Sterland's story features a heady mix of humour, gambling and punch-ups, and will have widespread appeal to football supporters. In the interests of authenticity, no attempt has been made to smooth off the rough edges, creating an honest, raw account.

Border’s Battlers

by Michael Sexton

It’s the 1986 tour of India, and Australian cricket is reeling from the loss of key players to retirement and rebel tours. Few give Australia a chance against a surging India, and even Allan Border doubts his ability to lead this team. What follows is one of the most titanic struggles in cricket history. Played in oppressive conditions, the first Test in Madras (now Chennai) swung like a pendulum. Tensions reached boiling point on and off the field. Dean Jones’s 210 was one of the gutsiest Australian knocks ever, Greg Matthews bowled for most of the final day (in a jumper!) and Ray Bright took five wickets despite being seriously ill. The climactic and controversial final ball forced a tie for only the second time in Test history and set a course for Allan Border to remain as captain. In Border’s Battlers, Michael Sexton details the momentous occasion when Australia drew a line in the dust of Madras, and drew inspiration from the fight. The team returned to Madras the next year to launch a winning World Cup campaign as rank outsiders and the seeds of a new golden age of Australian cricket were sown.
