Managing Voluntary Sport Organizations

by Leigh Robinson Dick Palmer

Contemporary sport could not function without the involvement of voluntary organizations, from local grass-roots clubs to international agencies such as the International Olympic Committee. Management of this sector continues to undergo profound change, largely in response to the challenges of professionalization and increasing expectations in terms of transparency, accountability and ethical behaviour. This book fills a significant gap in the literature on sport management by setting out the principles and practices necessary for effective management of voluntary sport organizations around the world. In addition to applying and adapting established management strategies and techniques to voluntary sport organizations, this book is the first to fully relate mainstream organizational theory to this important sector of sport management. With contributions from an international team of researchers and management practitioners, the book explores key functional areas such as: governance strategy and planning human resources finance managing change marketing event management risk management. Each chapter discusses best practice and includes case study material, self test questions and guides to further reading. As the only book to outline a professional, theoretically informed and practically focused curriculum for voluntary sport management, this book is essential reading for all students of sport management and all managers working in or alongside the voluntary sector.

Manchester City - 50 Memorable Matches

by Stuart Brodkin

Manchester City – 50 Memorable Matches is Stuart Brodkin’s very personal account of watching City from 1956 to the present day and is more than just an eyewitness record, it’s a roller-coaster ride with the lowest of the lows and the highest of the highs along the way.The book takes in the Cup Final triumphs and tragedies, the Joe Mercer and Malcolm Allison regime that brought the First Division title and the European Cup-Winners’ Cup to Maine Road, and the latter years when the Abu Dhabi project made City the team of the decade in the UK, highlighted by a clean sweep of domestic honours under Pep Guardiola. In between, there is the day when Alan Ball mis-calculated and the team was relegated and the drama of the Second Division play-off final at Wembley when the Sky Blues looked almost certain to end up in English football’s lowest professional tier.Add into the mix the iconic ‘Aguerooo’ moment at the Etihad when the club’s first Premier League title was clinched under Roberto Mancini in one of the most sensational games in the history of football and lots of personal experiences of going to games the length and breadth of the country and abroad and you have a book that all City fans will want to get their hands on.The book consists of 50 memorable games that Stuart attended, starting in the mid-50s right up to Project Restart and the 2020-21 season. bringing in his own experiences, having met several of the team’s superstars.Manchester-born Stuart Brodkin, now exiled in London 188.4 miles from the Etihad, has been a City fan all his life. He attended Manchester Grammar School, but skipped university to begin a career as a journalist, graduating from local papers to working in Fleet Street for the Daily Mirror and Daily Express. by Rob Mason

This is Manchester City's golden age. City have a long history of success from being FA Cup winners: In 1904, through the stars of the thirties who won league and cup, the Revie Plan cup winners of the fifties and into the halcyon era when Colin Bell, Francis Lee and Mike Summerbee brought five different trophies to the club in the space of five years beginning in the late sixties. But in the last decade City have emerged as the dominant force of the era. Manchester United … The Best of

by Rob Mason

Manchester United is acknowledged as the biggest club in the world with the largest number of fans, one of the best known stadiums in Old Trafford, and a roster of legendary players that includes four of the greatest of all time in George Best, Sir Bobby Charlton, Denis Law and Cristiano Ronaldo. It also had the greatest British manager of all time in Sir Alex Ferguson whose tally of 38 trophies included 13 Premier League titles and two Champions League crowns. This fully-illustrated A to Z includes all the great players from Duncan Edwards and the Busby Babes through to Ryan Giggs, the club's longest serving player, and Wayne Rooney, the all-time leading scorer and the only player to have scored 253 goals for the Reds. The book also recalls the tragedy of the Munich air disaster in which 23 people lost their lives including eight first team players and the triumphs of the club's first European Cup win at Wembley in 1968 and the Treble of 1999 in which they won the Premier League, the FA Cup and the Champions' League.

Manchester United in Europe: Tragedy, History, Destiny (Mainstream Sport Ser. (PDF))

by Ken Ferris

Manchester United's quest to win the European Cup was forged amidst the charred remains of an Elizabethan airliner that crashed on take-off at Munich's Riem Airport on 6 February 1958. Twenty-three people died in the tragedy, including eight of the famous Busby Babes. From that moment manager Matt Busby's goal of winning the European Cup became an obsession that permeated the whole club.Ten years after the Munich disaster, Busby achieved his dream when United - inspired by Bobby Charlton and George Best - beat Benfica 4-1 in extra time to lift the European Cup at Wembley. Some felt the ghosts of Munich were there to witness the club's joy. It seemed to be United's destiny finally to honour those who had lost their lives in pursuit of the gleaming silver trophy. But that triumph was to hang over the club for the next 31 years as United failed to regain those heights. Alex Ferguson's arrival spawned a flood of trophies, but the European Cup - by then known as the Champions League - remained elusively outside their grasp. Then came the last final of the twentieth century, against Bayern Munich in the towering splendour of Barcelona's Nou Camp, when United snatched a 2-1 victory from the jaws of defeat to complete the impossible Treble. Manchester United in Europe: Tragedy, Destiny, History recounts the course of those three European campaigns. Using first-hand accounts of the dramatic events, the book describes the sadness and the joy that have run through United's pursuit of European glory and considers the club's chances of ever repeating the European triumphs of the past.

Manchester United Ruined My Life

by Colin Shindler

Colin Shindler was dealt a cruel hand by Fate when he became a passionate Manchester City supporter. In this brilliant sporting autobiography he recalls the great characters of his youth, like his eccentric Uncle Laurence, as well as his professional heroes. Threaded through these sporting events is the author's own story, which touches on a universal nerve, growing up in a Jewish family, his childhodd destroyed by the sudden death of his mother and his slow emotional recovery through his love for Manchester City. It is a tale that reveals what it is like to be on the outside looking in, with his nose pressed up against the sweet shop window watching the United supporters take all the wine gums.

Manchester's Finest: How the Munich air disaster broke the heart of a great city

by David Hall

On 6 February 1958, British European Airways flight 609 crashed in a blizzard on its third attempt to take off from an icy runaway in Munich. On board were the Manchester United football team as well as a number of journalists and other passengers. News of the disaster sent shockwaves around the world. For people who lived in Manchester at the time and for football fans throughout Britain it was one of those moments when everybody remembers exactly where they were and how they heard the terrible news. Manchester United, nicknamed the Busby Babes after their manager, Matt Busby, who had created the world-beating side, were the leading team of the day. Seven of their players were killed instantly in the crash. Three weeks later Duncan Edwards, one of the most promising players ever to come out of England, lost his battle for life. Two other players, Jackie Blanchflower and Johnny Berry, were so severely injured that they were never able to play again.Manchester's Finest tells of this terrible air crash, but it is also the story of the immediate aftermath of the disaster and the effect on the city of Manchester. It paints a vivid picture of Manchester at that time, from February 1958 to the end of the season in May when a patched-up team, carried along on a great wave of emotion, reached the FA Cup Final. It is about the fans, the people of Manchester and about the place of a football team in the heart of a city.

The Manly Art: Bare-Knuckle Prize Fighting in America

by Elliott J. Gorn

"It didn't occur to me until fairly late in the work that I was writing a book about the beginnings of a national celebrity culture. By 1860, a few boxers had become heroes to working-class men, and big fights drew considerable newspaper coverage, most of it quite negative since the whole enterprise was illegal. But a generation later, toward the end of the century, the great John L. Sullivan of Boston had become the nation's first true sports celebrity, an American icon. The likes of poet Vachel Lindsay and novelist Theodore Dreiser lionized him—Dreiser called him 'a sort of prize fighting J. P. Morgan'—and Ernest Thompson Seton, founder of the Boy Scouts, noted approvingly that he never met a lad who would not rather be Sullivan than Leo Tolstoy."—from the AfterwordPraise for the first edition—"Gorn is an adventurous historian with a talent for informed speculation. He has written an exciting narrative history of boxing and then gone a step further to ask a series of questions that extend his focus to the whole of nineteenth-century American culture."—The Nation"Gorn combines colorful, witty, powerful narrative with enormously sophisticated analytical rigor, and the result is a book that anyone remotely interested in America's nineteenth century should read."—Virginia Quarterly Review"Gorn's finely conceived and craftsmanlike book catches the spirit of a young nation rushing to industrialization and how prize fighting was affected by, and came to reflect, much of the national mood and character. The Manly Art is first-rate social history rendered in felicitous prose."—Chicago Sun-Times"The Manly Art is an important contribution to the study of nineteenth-century American culture. Writing with clarity, vigor, and grace, Gorn combines detailed narrative with convincing interpretations. He offers the reader a judicious selection of quotations from the sporting press that capture the drama, sensuality, and brutality of the ring and its craftsmen."—The Journal of American HistoryElliott J. Gorn's The Manly Art tells the story of boxing's origins and the sport's place in American culture. When first published in 1986, the book helped shape the ways historians write about American sport and culture, expanding scholarly boundaries by exploring masculinity as an historical subject and by suggesting that social categories like gender, class, and ethnicity can be understood only in relation to each other. This updated edition of Gorn's highly influential history of the early prize rings features a new afterword, the author's meditation on the ways in which studies of sport, gender, and popular culture have changed in the quarter century since the book was first published. An up-to-date bibliography ensures that The Manly Art will remain a vital resource for a new generation.

A Man's Got to Have a Hobby: Long Summers with my Dad

by William McInnes

William McInnes' bestselling memoir, A Man's Got To Have A Hobby, takes us back to the long summer holidays of the 1960s and 70s, and the last of the baby-boomer childhoods. The Mantis: A mountaineering novel

by Philip Temple

It is not the courage to go back up that we need. It's the courage to go down. Just to go on … ' In 1977 a British expedition led by Himalayan veteran Geoff Strickland, summiteer of K2 and Everest among others, set off to attempt the first ascent of unclimbed Puthemojar - the 'Mantis' - in the Karakoram. 25,311 feet high, renowned for its difficulty, and with a fearsome reputation, the Mantis had claimed the life of at least one climber on each of the previous expeditions that had attempted to scale its complex series of ridges and icefalls. In order to claim the coveted first ascent, Strickland put together a small team comprising the cream of British mountaineering talent: his long-time Himalayan climbing partner and photographer Michael Blackmore; the redoubtable northerner Joe Dodge, as tough as they come; Dodge's regular partner and another veteran of numerous Himalayan expeditions Doug Lowrie; and two young guns - Brit Alan Wyllie, and Kiwi Peter Chase, a pair who had been tearing up the Alpine rule book with daring ascents on the steepest and most difficult faces. Although Michael Blackmore's 1980 record of the climb - The Last Challenge - has become a classic of mountaineering literature, Blackmore himself was never satisfied it told the full story of the events on Puthemojar in 1977. Before his death in 2000, Blackmore had prepared a draft manuscript - a 'creative narrative' - of the expedition which, with thanks to Blackmore's widow, has now been completed by award-winning author and mountaineer Philip Temple. While perhaps best regarded as a work of fiction, The Mantis tells for the first time the gripping story of that 1977 British expedition to Puthemojar. It is a portrait of these men, their drive, this mountain and a credible testimony of just what went on, high on the Mantis.
