Return-to-Play after Lower Limb Muscle Injury in Football: The Italian Consensus Conference Guidelines

by Gian Nicola Bisciotti Alessandro Corsini Piero Volpi

Return to training (RTT) and return to play (RTP) decisions making process in football are currently based on expert's opinion. However, there are no consensus guidelines on evidence-based decision-making. This book provides a framework for evidence-based decision-making both in RTT and RTP following lower-limb muscle injuries sustained in football.Based on the “Italian Consensus Conference (2019) on return-to-play after lower limb muscle injury in football”, it provides a list of RTT and RTP criteria after such injuries compiled by orthopedic surgeons, sports physicians, radiologists, rehabilitation physicians, sport physiologists, general surgeons, family physicians, physiotherapists, physical trainers and psychologists working in elite football in Italy. The book identifies the main criteria for RTT and RTP following injuries involving the most important muscle groups, i.e. quadriceps, hamstring, hip adductor, hip external rotator, iliopsoas and soleus-gastrocnemius.As such it is a valuable reference resource for practitioners making RTT and RTP decisions making process.

Reverse Shoulder Arthroplasty: Biomechanics, Clinical Techniques, and Current Technologies

by Mark Frankle Scott Marberry Derek Pupello

Focusing exclusively on reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA) techniques and devices, this plentifully illustrated text covers all aspects of this important and innovative treatment for shoulder pain and dysfunction. The book begins with a history of RSA followed by a thorough overview of the basic science and biomechanics of the shoulder. Indications for and clinical applications of RSA in a number of surgical interventions are then described, including the revision of failed shoulder arthroplasty, setting in cases of glenoid and humeral bone loss and rotator cuff tears. A whole section is then dedicated to various commercial devices with descriptive expert analysis of the design and implementation of each. An examination of the current economic value of RSA, including cost effectiveness and expected cost outcomes, comprises the final section. Reverse Shoulder Arthroplasty can therefore be read either from start to finish, allowing orthopedic surgeons to appreciate the various perspectives offered, or by selecting specific topics of interest much like a “how-to manual” of either a particular device design or the treatment of a specific pathology.

Reverse Shoulder Arthroplasty: Current Techniques and Complications

by Stefano Gumina Federico Alberto Grassi Paolo Paladini

This handbook fully investigates reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA), presenting all the recent advances in the field to enable shoulder surgeons to treat patients with complex conditions, such as rotator cuff tears and instability, failed surgery and combined arthritis, or proximal humerus neoplasia.Reverse shoulder arthroplasty is becoming increasingly common because conventional total shoulder replacement may cause pain, loss of strength, simple or complex disabilities as well as limited motion, reducing general quality of life. The goal of a reverse prosthesis is to restore a painless, biomechanically valid joint. Drawing on the results of recent studies, the book covers all relevant aspects of RSA, including basic science, pathogenesis, clinical and instrumental evaluation, surgical techniques and complication management, helping readers to better understand when and how reverse shoulder arthroplasty should be implanted and what to do in cases of poor results. Written by leading shoulder specialists, the book provides surgeons and rehabilitation specialists, as well as residents and shoulder fellows, with a valuable, state-of-the-art guide for clinical practice.

Reviewing the AFLs Vilification Laws: Rule 35, Reconciliation and Racial Harmony in Australian Football (Sport in the Global Society – Contemporary Perspectives)

by Sean Gorman Dean Lusher Keir Reeves

This book is the outcome of an Australian Research Council (ARC)-funded project titled Assessing the Australian Football League’s Racial and Religious Vilification Laws to Promote Community Harmony, Multiculturalism and Reconciliation, which investigated the impact of the Australian Football League’s anti-vilification policy since its introduction in 1995. With key stakeholders the Australian Football League, the AFL Players’ Association and the Office of Multicultural Affairs (previously the Victorian Multicultural Commission), the book gauges the attitudes and perspectives of players and coaches in the AFL regarding Rule 35, the code’s anti-vilification rule. The overarching themes of multiculturalism, reconciliation and social harmony in the AFL workplace have been the guiding ideals that we examined and analysed. The outcomes from the research vectors look at and engage with key issues about race, diversity and difference as it pertains to the elite AFL code, but also looks at the ongoing international conversation as it pertains to these themes in sport. This book was previously published as a special issue of Sport in Society.

Revision Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction: A Case-Based Approach

by Michael J. Alaia Kristofer J. Jones

Anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction is one of the most common procedures performed in sports medicine centers. However, these procedures can carry a long-term failure rate as high as 5-15%%, and when these procedures fail, revision is significantly more complex. Considerable factors need to be assessed in patients that are indicated for surgery, as revisions carry a higher failure rate and potentially less optimal outcomes and return to sport and activity. These factors include, but are not limited to, the status of the meniscus, overall alignment, graft options, placement of prior implants or tunnels, collateral ligament quality, and whether or not the revision must be staged into two procedures. This text provides a comprehensive, case-based presentation of the most efficient and practical treatment algorithms for patients in need of revision ACL repair and reconstruction. Opening chapters discuss the initial patient work-up, radiography, surgical indications, graft options, and pre-operative considerations and preparations. The main portion of the book then describes both common factors leading to revision surgery as well as the surgical techniques themselves, illustrated via plentiful operative photos and vivid clinical case material. The management of osteolysis, ligamentous laxity, extra-articular tenodesis, plane correction, and meniscus deficiency, among others, are discussed in detail. Special populations, such as the pediatric patient, the elite athlete and the female athlete, are discussed as well. Shedding light on this challenging surgical repair, Revision Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction is the go-to resource for sports medicine and orthopedic surgeons, knee specialists and residents and fellows in these areas.

Revolutions: How Women Changed the World on Two Wheels

by Hannah Ross

Simone de Beauvoir borrowed her lover's bike to cycle around Paris in the 1940s, instantly falling in love with the freedom it gave her (even when an accident caused her to lose a tooth). Alice Hawkins, a factory worker from Leicester, pedal-powered her fight for universal suffrage as the bicycle became a cornerstone of her work to recruit women to the cause. Zahra Naarin Hussano challenged religious and cultural taboos in Afghanistan to ride a bike and teach others to do the same. As a twenty-four-year-old Latvian immigrant living in Boston, in 1894 Annie 'Londonderry' Kopchovsky became the first woman to cycle around the world. She took up the challenge, despite never having ridden a bike before, after two men bet a woman couldn't do it.Many of these women were told they couldn't or shouldn't cycle, but they did so anyway. Whether winning medals or spreading the word about votes for women, their stories are an inspiration. In this gloriously celebratory book, Hannah Ross introduces us to the women who are part of the rich and varied history of cycling, many of whom have been pushed to the margins or forgotten.
