Outdoor Environmental Education in Higher Education: International Perspectives (International Explorations in Outdoor and Environmental Education #9)

by Heather Prince Glyn Thomas Janet Dyment

This book brings together an international group of authors to discuss the outdoor environmental education (OEE) theory and practice that educators can use to support teaching and learning in higher education. The book contents are organised around a recently established list of threshold concepts that can be used to describe the knowledge and skills that university students would develop if they complete a major in outdoor education. There are six key sections: the theoretical foundations and philosophies of OEE; the pedagogical approaches and issues involved in teaching OEE; the ways in which OEE is a social, cultural and environmental endeavour; how outdoor educators can advocate for social justice; key approaches to safety management; and the need for on-going professional practice. The threshold concepts that form the premise of the book describe outdoor educators as creating opportunities for experiential learning using pedagogies that align their programme’s purpose and practice. Outdoor educators are place-responsive, and see their work as a social, cultural and environmental endeavour. They advocate for social and environmental justice, and they understand and apply safety principles and routinely engage in reflective practice. This book will provide clarity and direction for emerging and established outdoor educators around the world and will also be relevant to students and professionals working in related fields such as environmental education, adventure therapy, and outdoor recreation.

The Oxford Introductions to U.S. Law: Intellectual Property (Oxford Introductions to U.S. Law)

by Dan Hunter

In The Oxford Introductions to U.S. Law: Intellectual Property, prominent intellectual property scholar Dan Hunter provides a precise, engaging overview and careful analysis of current laws of intellectual property and their history. Hunter first focuses on the central areas of intellectual property law, including copyright, patent, trademark, and trade secrets. He then explores the politics, economics, psychology and rhetoric of possession and control that influence and interact with this area of law. Hunter explains how intellectual property has contributed greatly to the innovations that we, as a society, need in our modern lives. He also describes ways in which the expansion of intellectual property can reduce innovation by stopping others from implementing great ideas or producing new work. Hunter helps readers think about modern intellectual property in a way that allows them to see how innovation and progress are linked to intellectual property law, and how small changes in the laws have had significant consequences for our society. Ultimately, Hunter helps readers form their own views about the various areas within the arena of intellectual property.

Paediatric Radiology Rapid Reporting

by Michael Paddock Amaka C. Offiah Caoilfhionn Ní Leidhin

There is a narrow margin between pass and fail in the notably demanding Rapid Reporting component of the Fellowship of the Royal College of Radiologists (FRCR) Part 2B examination. This book provides readers with a comprehensive evaluation of paediatric radiographs, not only for those preparing for this examination but for all those who report them in their clinical practice. The overriding principle remains the same regardless of background – safe radiographic interpretation. Prospective candidates may have only had limited opportunity to report paediatric imaging, which may have been some time before they attempt the examination. Whilst other resources provide only a limited selection of paediatric radiographs, this book is solely dedicated to improving skill and knowledge in paediatric reporting. This text has been meticulously crafted to bridge any gaps in knowledge, while addressing deficiencies repeatedly identified in the FRCR Part 2B Examiners’ Reports in that “many candidates struggle with interpretation of paediatric imaging—even for common paediatric pathologies” and that “knowledge of normal appearances on paediatric plain images…was particularly poor in the Rapid Reporting”. This new edition has been extensively revised and contains 3 new tests. This unrivalled educational resource now comprises nearly 400 practice paediatric radiographs which is unique to the marketplace. The range of cases, from neonate to adolescent, deliver a sound knowledge of common paediatric fracture patterns and pathologies which enables readers to confidently differentiate between normal and abnormal. The much-lauded explanations accompanying these high-quality imaging tests remain robust and accurate, allowing candidates to maximise their preparation for all facets of the FRCR 2B examination and beyond. Participatory Research with Young Children (Educating the Young Child #17)

by Angela Eckhoff

This book presents a guiding framework for designing and supporting participatory research with young children. The volume shares detailed approaches to research designs that support collaborative work with young children and teachers in a wide range of early learning environments. It presents conceptual and ethical considerations for participatory work, and explores children’s agency through engagement in participatory practices. It examines challenges to accepted practices and understandings of young children, and discusses the analysis and dissemination of participatory work with children. In doing so, the book informs readers about the conceptual understandings and methodological approaches that can be used to support participatory research investigations where the young child is viewed as knowledgeable and capable of sharing unique opinions, interpretations, and understandings of her experiences as embedded within social, cultural, and political worlds. The book sets the stage for early childhood researchers and educators to develop new understandings grounded in post-developmental, critical, and social constructivist theories while exploring supportive methodological approaches.
