How the Whale Became and Other Stories

by Ted Hughes

[PART-WORK:nbsp;only includes one story "How the Cat Became", pages 15-20 of 96] Ted Hughes' classic creation tales for young children are now published in full-colour for the first time, accompanied by stunning illustrations from the award-winning artist Jackie Morris. This collection of eleven evocative, accessible and funny stories for children of 5+ tells how a particular animal came to be as it is now. The Whale grew up in God's vegetable patch but was banished to sea when he became too large and crushed all His carrots; the Polar Bear was lured to the North Pole by the other animals who were jealous that she always won the annual beauty contest; the Hare has asked the moon to marry him but can never stretch his ears high enough to hear her reply; the Bee must sip honey all day long to sweeten the bitter demon that runs through his veins . . . each story is a delight for reading alone or aloud.

Anna Witch (PDF)

by Madeleine Edmondson

Once upon a time, and not so very long ago either, a big witch and a little witch lived together in a gingerbread house deep in the dark forest. The little one was named Anna Witch, because witches are very fond of names that spell the same forward and backward. Her mother's name was Ada Witch, but sometimes Anna called her Mum, because that spells the same both ways too. Around their house was a white picket fence with a magic gate that opened only when Anna Witch or her mother asked it to.

Story Chest: Cave Boy (PDF)

by Charles Jackson

For once, Juk the Swift One was still. Sitting astride a tall rock set on a high place in the hills, he was looking away to the Cold Lands, where the distant blue haze of mountains marked the limit for even his keen eyes. Near him lay Tuthi, the wild dog he had tamed. Nose on paws, eyes slitted, Tuthi seemed to be asleep, although it needed but one movement from Juk and he would be alert and leaping. "Story Chest" is a scheme of high interest readers for KS1/2. This well-known series has self-contained, funny and predictable stories. Good for using with beginner readers and reluctant/SEN readers because of the style and predictable text.

Charlotte's Web

by E B White

Wilbur is the runt of a litter born to a pig on the farm of Fern Arable's father. When it is announced that her father is going to kill the pig, Fern rushes forth to save it, asking of her father: If I had been very small at birth, would you have killed me? Her father spares the pig, but only if Fern agrees to care for it. Falling in love immediately with the little pig, she feeds him regularly with a bottle, and names him Wilbur. Wilbur is Fern's constant companion until he grows big enough to be transferred to his new home in the barn of Fern's neighboring uncle. Fern is able to visit Wilbur, but is unable to see him as often. Out of boredom, Wilbur begins to befriend other animals in the barn, who often patronizingly instruct the still naïve little pig in the ways of life. His most important friend, however, turns out to be a spider named Charlotte, who occupies a web in the corner of a doorway above him. Her love for Wilbur, coupled with her ingenuity, will save Wilbur's life.
