Pro-Poor Strategies in Urban Water Provisioning: What Kenyan Water Utilities Do and Why They Do It (IHE Delft PhD Thesis Series)
by Akosua Sarpong Boakye-AnsahWater utilities are the main instrument for countries to achieve universal service coverage. In pursuing universal service coverage, water utilities have turned to pro-poor water services to extend water services in low-income areas. This thesis discusses the use of pro-poor water services by water utilities in Kenya, with the intention of highlighting the dimensions of the approach that require attention of policy makers and practitioners when engaging with the concept. Based on the analysis of the technologies, financial and organisational arrangements associated with the pro-poor concept, this thesis shows that the use of pro-poor strategies allows water utilities to reduce the risks of servicing low-income areas while still claiming to fulfil their mandate of providing access to all in a commercially viable manner. The analysis also shows that rather than a decision of the water utility, the choice for pro-poor strategies emerges as the result of a consensus or compromise between the different actors that constitute the broader institutional environment in which water utilities operate. The thesis concludes that while pro-poor water services may serve the interests of water utilities and other stakeholders, in the absence of well-directed subsidies and proper monitoring they will not result in low-income households benefiting from more affordable and reliable access to water.

by David BoalThis volume contains the invited lectures and seminars presented at the Banff Summer Institute on Particles and Fields held at the Banff Center in Banff, Canada,from 25 August to 3 September, 1977. The town is situated in the heart of the Canadian Rockies, and the observant reader may notice references in this volume to the bears which roam near the town. The subject matter of the school was recent advances in particle physics and field theory. Lectures were given on such topics as extended objects, lattice gauge theories, quantum chromodynamics and Reggeon field theory. Experimental reviews were given of recent work in charmed particle and neutrino physics. Summaries of the theoretical implications of these experiments were also given. The format of the talks included eight lecture series (of three to four hours each) given by Profs. Abarbanel, Appelquist, Feldman, Gilman, 't Hooft, Jackiw, Mann and Weinstein, seven one-hour seminars given by Profs. Caianiello, Fujii, Johnson, Lam, Phillips, Sherry and Tze, and several short contributed seminars (which do not appear in this volume). There were also small informal seminar groups held at the Center and, we hope, many physics conversations on the hiking trails where most of the participants spent their afternoons. Not included in these proceedings are the banquet speeches by E. Caianiello and S. D. Drell, as well as (for copyright reasons) a seminar by K. Johnson.

WoloshynEach summer, the Theoretical Physics Division of the Canadian Association of Physicists organizes a summer institute of two weeks duration on a current topic in theoretical physics. This volume contains the lectures from the Pacific Summer Institute held at Pearson College on Vancouver Island, B. C. (Canada) from August 23 to September 3, 1982. The Institute was titled "Progress in Nuclear Dynamics: Short-Distance Behavior in the Nucleus". The primary source of funds for the Institute came from NATO through its Advanced Study Institute programme. Significant finan cial support is also gratefully acknowledged from TRIUMF, Simon Fraser University, Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, and Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd. The topic of the school was the role of the substructure of hadrons--quarks and gluons--in nuclear physics. This includes not only the effects which may be observed in specific nuclear states, such as form factors at large momentum transfer, or the presence of hidden color components in the ground states of few nucleon systems, but also effects which may be observed in the nuclear matter contin uum: the phase transition from normal nuclear matter to a plasma of quarks and gluons. The current status of the long distance phenom enology of the nucleus--the interacting boson approximation and the role of n's and ~'s in nuclear structure, is also reviewed.
