The Trenches (My Story Ser.)

by Jim Eldridge

JUNE 1917 Mustard gas! A feeling of panic hit me and I scrambled to get my respirator over my face before the killer gas got into my mouth and nose and burnt my lungs. It burned everything it touched. Eyes. Skin. And it always found a way in. Like now, I could feel where it had crept up inside the sleeves of my uniform and the skin on my arms felt like it was on fire. I threw myself into a muddy hole, pushing my arms under water, but I knew it was already too late. I stumbled to my feet, saturated, with the weight of wet mud clinging to me. I couldn't move. I couldn't see...

Trenchard: The Life of Viscount Trenchard, Father of the Royal Air Force

by Russell Miller

'A magnetic and colourful portrait' Daily TelegraphHugh 'Boom' Trenchard was embarrassed by being described as 'The Father of the Royal Air Force' - he thought others were more deserving. But the reality was that no man did more to establish the world's first independent air force and ensure its survival in the teeth of fierce opposition from both the Admiralty and the War Office. Born in Taunton in 1873, Trenchard struggled at school, not helped by the shame of his solicitor father's bankruptcy when he was sixteen. He failed entrance examinations to both the Royal Navy and the Army several times, eventually obtaining a commission through the 'back door' of the militia. After service in India, South Africa - where he was seriously wounded - and Nigeria, he found his destiny when he joined the fledgling Royal Flying Corps in 1912, where he was soon known as 'Boom' thanks to his stentorian voice. Quick to recognise the huge potential aircraft offered in future conflicts, he rose rapidly to command the RFC in France during the First World War despite handicaps that would have blighted conventional military careers: he was obstinate, tactless, inarticulate and chronically unable to remember names - yet he was able to inspire unflagging loyalty among all ranks. Despite his conspicuous distrust of politicians, he served as a successful Chief of the Air Staff for a decade after the war and then, at the personal request of the King, took over as Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, which he reorganised and reformed. He never wavered in his belief that mastery of the air could only be achieved by relentless offensive action, or in his determined advocacy of strategic bombing. His most enduring legacy was the creation of the finest air force in the world, engendered with the spirit that won the Battle of Britain.

Trench Warfare 1914–1918: The Live and Let Live System

Trench Talk: Words of the First World War

by Peter Doyle Julian Walker

The First World War largely directed the course of the twentieth century. Fought on three continents, the war saw 14 million killed and 34 million wounded. Its impact shaped the world we live in today, and the language of the trenches continues to live in the modern consciousness. One of the enduring myths of the First World War is that the experience of the trenches was not talked about. Yet dozens of words entered or became familiar in the English language as a direct result of the soldiers’ experiences. This book looks at how the experience of the First World War changed the English language, adding words that were both in slang and standard military use, and modifying the usage and connotations of existing words and phrases. Illustrated with material from the authors’ collections and photographs of the objects of the war, the book will look at how the words emerged into everyday language.

Trench system (UEB uncontracted)

by Rnib

This page shows a labelled plan of a typical trench system of the front line of the First World War. There is a locator dot shown, which will be at the top left, when the image is the correct way up. The image is surrounded by a dashed line image border. The lines of trenches run horizontally across the page. The German front line trench is at the top of the page. There are three Allied trenches in the middle and bottom of the page. There are also short communication trenches linking them up. The trenches were dug in clever 'zigzag' sections to minimise damage, only a small area would be affected if it was attacked by enemy forces or hit by a shell. Between the German trench at the top of the page and the Allied front line trench in the centre of the page is no-man's land. This would be empty apart from coils of barbed wire and craters made by shelling. There are observation trenches breaking into no-man's land. There would be tunnels going into no-man's land as well. These would give hidden access to the enemy lines for sabotage.

Trench Fever

by Christopher Moore

For Chris Moore, the Great War has developed from a childhood fascination to a full-blown obsession, both for the actuality, of the war - its archives and its archaeology - as well as its abiding influence on English language, manners and customs.Exasperated with the emphasis most war literature places on the officers, generals and political leaders, Chris Moore decided to trace the war-time experiences of one man, one personal history among the six million voiceless ranks of Britons in uniform. He chose Private Walter Butterworth, Fifth Battalion, the Leicestershire Regiment, an obscure infantryman in a disparaged outfit of amateurs that somehow managed to win one of the greatest battles of history - who also happened to be Chris Moore's grandfather. In TRENCH FEVER, Chris Moore retrieves his grandfather's war-song by following (with reluctant family in tow) the three year march of the Fifth Leicesters through France and Flanders.
