Further, the number of individuals exposed in accidents, such as Chernobyl, U. S. S. R. ; Goiania, Brazil; and San Salvador, El Salvador, underscores the potential for large-scale radiation accidents. Because of these accidents, health care providers have found themselves treating patients with acute radiation injuries and subsequent complications. Often the radiation injuries are combined with burns or other trauma and the infectious and immune complications associated with such injuries. The treatment of victims of these accidents has provided important information about the medical management of radiation casualties. However, development of techniques to improve the diagnosis and treatment of radiation injuries, to collect follow up data on survivors, and to determine the long-term effects of uncontrolled radiation exposure must continue. The Armed Forces Radiobiology Research Institute, Bethesda, Maryland, and its Medical Radiobiology Advisory Team sponsored the First Consensus Development Conference on the Treatment of Radiation Injuries in Washington, DC, on May 10-13, 1989. The Treatment of Prostatic Hypertrophy and Neoplasia

Often an enlarged prostate is the only difficulty to cloud an otherwise tranquil old age". This statement emphasizes two important features of benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH); the frequency with which it occurs and its association with increasing age. The true incidence is difficult to determine as most data relate to selected groups of patients; moreover, the diagnostic criteria of prostatic hypertrophy are not clearly defined. Normality merges imperceptibly into abnormality, for even in men who are clinically normal, rates of urinary flow decrease with 2 increasing age . Despite these inaccuracies, incidence figures show the magnitude of the problem; Flocks (1963) 3 reported that 65% of American men over 60 years suffer from it and in a selected group of Danish men 43% had symptoms of the 4 disease ; similar figures are reported for the U ni ted Kingdom 5. At present most patients with BPH, who need treatment, undergo surgical prostatectomy which may be considered the usual treatment. The frequency of the disease alone, creates certain problems, for annually more than 30000 men are admitted to hospital in the United States with this as a primary diagnosis and with an ageing population the figures can be expected to increase.

Treatment of Postoperative Complications After Digestive Surgery

Moreover, the pertaining approach - laparoscopic or open - will probably not differ in the morbidity rate after surgery. Complications that occur after a surgical intervention can be classified as major or minor. Major complications to the digestive tract after surgery imply in most of cases a leakage of an anastomosis, bleeding in the abdominal cavity or in the tract, the appearance of intraperitoneal abscesses, or surgical site infections and wound dehiscence. These complications, depending on the organ affected, upper GI, HPB tract or colorectal, are associated with high morbidity and mortality. Early suspicion and diagnosis, followed by an early and effective treatment is imperative in order to reduce the morbidity and mortality. Adequate treatment will involve a good coordination of the three disciplines involved in treatment: the surgeon, the intervention radiologist, and the gastroenterologist.Approach of these postoperative complications is changing constantly and these changes are not properly known by general and more specialized digestive surgeons daily involved in the treatment of these diseases.The proposal for this book is to offer a systematic description of the most frequent complications occurring in the three above mentioned parts of the digestive tract. Treatment of Petroleum Refinery Wastewater with Constructed Wetlands (IHE Delft PhD Thesis Series)

This problem can be addressed by the application of constructed wetlands (CWs) which is a nature-based system that is simple to construct, have low operational and maintenance costs in terms of supply of energy and its periodic maintenance. The application of CWs in Nigeria for polishing of petroleum refinery wastewater is an unprecedented research. This PhD thesis focused on some specific objectives which were characterization of treated secondary refinery wastewater, design, construction, operation and monitoring of planted (T. latifolia, C. alternifolius and C. dactylon) and unplanted vertical subsurface flow, horizontal subsurface flow and hybrid CWs for the removal of suspended solids, nutrients, heavy metals, organic matter and organic pollutants. The CWs effectively treated the petroleum contaminated wastewater to effluent compliance limits. In this study, T. latifolia planted CWs had consistently higher removal efficiencies for all the measured parameters than C. alternifolius and C. dactylon planted CW systems. Therefore, in order to improve the wastewater quality discharged by Kaduna Refining and Petrochemical Company (KRPC) Nigeria, meet stringent guidelines and protect the recipient streams, installation of CWs at the effluent discharge point of KRPC is strongly recommended.
