Treatment of Substance Abuse: Psychosocial Occupational Therapy Approaches

by Diane Gibson

This timely volume fills a long-standing gap in the professional literature by providing an overview of contemporary assessment and rehabilitation of alcohol and chemical dependent substance abusers. Although many occupational therapists and other activity therapy staff work in substance abuse programs, few articles in occupational therapy literature address this relevant topic. Treatment of Substance Abuse: Psychosocial Occupational Therapy Approaches provides a unique overview of contemporary assessment and rehabilitiation of alcohol and chemical dependent substance abusers. The highlights of this insightful book include behavioral and educational frames of reference as well as specific treatment modalities such as stress management, activities of daily living, and leisure counseling. Contributors examine current polemics regarding programs that use methadone versus abstinence and theoretical concepts including the psychodynamic model with emphasis on the defensive structure underlying the abuser’s personality, as well as leveled conceptual framework for considering treatment. A number of practical techniques are discussed within the overall context of each article; hence the reader will find usable guidelines for establishing boundaries of treatment as well as discreet ideas about methods and practice. Roles and functions of varying disciplines are reviewed in an effort to discriminate role clarity and provide implications for practice in relation to different models. This issue is valuable to the OT who seeks an understanding of the varying viewpoints and current practice in the substance abuse field.

Treatment of Spine Disease in the Elderly: Cutting Edge Techniques and Technologies

by Kai-Ming G. Fu Michael Wang Michael Virk John Dimar Praveen Mummaneni

As the population continues to age worldwide, spinal disease will become more prevalent in the elderly population. The treatment of spinal disease requires an individual approach encorporating best practices. Optimal management in the elderly may differ from younger patients due to increased comorbidities, decreased bone health, and a higher risk of perioperative morbidity and mortality. While more and more elderly patients will require evaluation and management of their spinal disease, most modern books discuss operative and nonoperative management based upon disease process. Techniques and approaches are described for a specific pathology, and are usually tailored for a young or middle aged patient. Treatment of Spine Disease in the Elderly: Cutting Edge Techniques and Technologies is designed to address this gap in today’s literature by expressly addressing spinal conditions in the elderly and current advanced techniques and technologies for treating their spinal disease. It will be intended as a resource for the beginning to the advanced surgeon and practitioner whom undertakes treatment of patients in this age group.

Treatment of Soft Tissue Sarcomas (Cancer Treatment and Research #44)

by JaapVerweij Herbert M. Pinedo

One of the major advances of the last decade concerning the treatment of patients with soft tissue sarcomas is that an increased number of patients are being discussed in multidisciplinary teams prior to the initial treatment. The present volume on soft tissue sarcomas in the series Cancer Treatment and Research reflects the multidisciplinary approach with a focus on recent developments. The availability of new histopathologic techniques has reduced the number of unclassified sarcomas and has furhter increased the importance of the histo pathologist in providing estimates of the prognosis of the patient as well as data for the planning of treatment strategy. Further data for this strategy will be provided by diagnostic imaging. In this field, the role of magnetic reson ance imaging has been further defined. Of utmost importance is the recent trend toward consensus in staging. The modification of the staging system of the American Joint Commission for Cancer Staging and End Results Report ing brings the possibility of a single staging system within reach in the next decade. As surgery still provides the only chance for cure, the importance of being the most sparing as possible is obvious. For this reason, radiotherapy has been applied with success. The introduction of relatively new radiation tech niques is therefore being observed with interest.

Treatment of Skin Cancer (Recent Results in Cancer Research #11)

by R.G. Freeman J.M. Knox

Although skin cancer is the most common form of cancer and presents a consis tent problem in recognition, in treatment, and in prevention, it usually does not receive as much attention as other more deadly forms of cancer. Nonetheless, a great deal of progress has been made toward understanding its cause and biological behavior as well as toward recognizing and treating early cancerous and pre-cancerous lesions. Today's physicians are more aware of early lesions and patients are seeking their advice on many small skin blemishes. In addition, clinicians are exploring new moda lities of treatment, including chemotherapy. Some of these methods are very simple and effective for eradicating early lesions, and we are rapidly approaching the time in which the only reasons for a death due to skin cancer will be lack of a patient's cooperation or a physician's error in management. The most important factors in improving the cure rate of skin cancer are a thorough knowledge of its cause and biological behavior and an understanding of the limitations of each modality of treatment.

Treatment of Sex Offenders: Strengths and Weaknesses in Assessment and Intervention

by D. Richard Laws William O’Donohue

This rigorous survey offers a comprehensive rethinking of the assessment and treatment of sexual offenders for a bold challenge to practitioners. It critiques what we understand about offenders and the mechanisms of offending behaviors, and examines how this knowledge can best be used to reduce offending and relapses. To this end, experts weigh the efficacy of common assessment methods and interventions, the value of prevention programs, and the validity of the DSM’s classifications of paraphilias. This strengths/weaknesses approach gives professional readers a guide to the current state as well as the future of research, practice, and policy affecting this complex and controversial field. Included in the coverage: Strengths of actuarial risk assessment. Risk formulation: the new frontier in risk assessment and management. Dynamic risk factors and offender rehabilitation: a comparison of the Good Lives Model and the Risk-Need-Responsivity Model. The best intentions: flaws in sexually violent predator laws. Desistance from crime: toward an integrated conceptualization for intervention. From a victim/offender duality to a public health perspective. A call to clear thought and accurate action, Treatment of Sex Offenders will generate discussion and interest among forensic psychologists, psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, and social workers.

Treatment of Radiation Injuries

by Doris Browne

The proliferation of radioactive materials in industry, in diagnostic and therapeutic medicine, in scientific and medical research, in the military, and as a source of energy has increased the likelihood of accidental exposure to ionizing radiation. Further, the number of individuals exposed in accidents, such as Chernobyl, U. S. S. R. ; Goiania, Brazil; and San Salvador, El Salvador, underscores the potential for large-scale radiation accidents. Because of these accidents, health care providers have found themselves treating patients with acute radiation injuries and subsequent complications. Often the radiation injuries are combined with burns or other trauma and the infectious and immune complications associated with such injuries. The treatment of victims of these accidents has provided important information about the medical management of radiation casualties. However, development of techniques to improve the diagnosis and treatment of radiation injuries, to collect follow up data on survivors, and to determine the long-term effects of uncontrolled radiation exposure must continue. The Armed Forces Radiobiology Research Institute, Bethesda, Maryland, and its Medical Radiobiology Advisory Team sponsored the First Consensus Development Conference on the Treatment of Radiation Injuries in Washington, DC, on May 10-13, 1989. The proceedings of the conference are presented in this volume, which we hope will serve as a reference for clinicians and basic research scientists who require knowledge of the latest developments in the diagnosis and treatment of radiation injuries. This conference was designed specifically to address the areas of hematopoietic injury, infectious complications, and combined injury.

The Treatment of Prostatic Hypertrophy and Neoplasia

by John E. Castro

In 1963 Professor Huggins! wrote "more than one half of the male population over the age of 50 suffer from benign tumors known as prostatic hypertrophy. Often an enlarged prostate is the only difficulty to cloud an otherwise tranquil old age". This statement emphasizes two important features of benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH); the frequency with which it occurs and its association with increasing age. The true incidence is difficult to determine as most data relate to selected groups of patients; moreover, the diagnostic criteria of prostatic hypertrophy are not clearly defined. Normality merges imperceptibly into abnormality, for even in men who are clinically normal, rates of urinary flow decrease with 2 increasing age . Despite these inaccuracies, incidence figures show the magnitude of the problem; Flocks (1963) 3 reported that 65% of American men over 60 years suffer from it and in a selected group of Danish men 43% had symptoms of the 4 disease ; similar figures are reported for the U ni ted Kingdom 5. At present most patients with BPH, who need treatment, undergo surgical prostatectomy which may be considered the usual treatment. The frequency of the disease alone, creates certain problems, for annually more than 30000 men are admitted to hospital in the United States with this as a primary diagnosis and with an ageing population the figures can be expected to increase.

Treatment of Primary Glomerulonephritis (Oxford Clinical Nephrology Series)

by Claudio Ponticelli and Richard J. Glassock

Primary glomerulonephritis is one of the most frequent renal diseases, and a main cause of end-stage kidney disease. Glomerulonephritis has multiple subtypes, each with different physiopathologies, clinical presentations, and management requirements, which makes treatment difficult. As a complex set of diseases, the choice of symptomatic and specific treatment is critical to ameliorating the relentless course of glomerulonephritis. Focusing on all aspects of primary glomerulonephritis, from their epidemiologies and classification, to their pathogenesis and treatment, this third edition of Treatment of Primary Glomerulonephritis has been fully updated to include the latest research and evidence-based practice. With a strong emphasis on drugs used for both symptomatic and specific treatments, mechanisms of action, effectiveness, and potential toxicity are considered for therapeutic strategies in the different subtypes of primary glomerulonephritis. Each chapter follows a clear and logical format, allowing easy access to key information. Featuring over 20 full-colour histological images of different diseases to aid diagnosis, and with commentary from internationally recognised experts in the field, this new edition is an essential resource for all practising or academic clinical nephrologists.

Treatment of Postoperative Complications After Digestive Surgery

by Miguel A. Cuesta H. Jaap Bonjer

Any surgical intervention, elective or acute, may lead to postoperative complications. Moreover, the pertaining approach - laparoscopic or open - will probably not differ in the morbidity rate after surgery. Complications that occur after a surgical intervention can be classified as major or minor. Major complications to the digestive tract after surgery imply in most of cases a leakage of an anastomosis, bleeding in the abdominal cavity or in the tract, the appearance of intraperitoneal abscesses, or surgical site infections and wound dehiscence. These complications, depending on the organ affected, upper GI, HPB tract or colorectal, are associated with high morbidity and mortality. Early suspicion and diagnosis, followed by an early and effective treatment is imperative in order to reduce the morbidity and mortality. Adequate treatment will involve a good coordination of the three disciplines involved in treatment: the surgeon, the intervention radiologist, and the gastroenterologist.Approach of these postoperative complications is changing constantly and these changes are not properly known by general and more specialized digestive surgeons daily involved in the treatment of these diseases. The proposal for this book is to offer a systematic description of the most frequent complications occurring in the three above mentioned parts of the digestive tract. In this way, the reader will have access to a practical book in which every current complication can be easily recognized, along with relevant information as guide for an adequate treatment.

Treatment of Petroleum Refinery Wastewater with Constructed Wetlands (IHE Delft PhD Thesis Series)

by Hassana Ibrahim Mustapha

Pollution of waterbodies and the environment by petroleum industry is of particular concern in Nigeria. This problem can be addressed by the application of constructed wetlands (CWs) which is a nature-based system that is simple to construct, have low operational and maintenance costs in terms of supply of energy and its periodic maintenance. The application of CWs in Nigeria for polishing of petroleum refinery wastewater is an unprecedented research. This PhD thesis focused on some specific objectives which were characterization of treated secondary refinery wastewater, design, construction, operation and monitoring of planted (T. latifolia, C. alternifolius and C. dactylon) and unplanted vertical subsurface flow, horizontal subsurface flow and hybrid CWs for the removal of suspended solids, nutrients, heavy metals, organic matter and organic pollutants. The CWs effectively treated the petroleum contaminated wastewater to effluent compliance limits. In this study, T. latifolia planted CWs had consistently higher removal efficiencies for all the measured parameters than C. alternifolius and C. dactylon planted CW systems. Therefore, in order to improve the wastewater quality discharged by Kaduna Refining and Petrochemical Company (KRPC) Nigeria, meet stringent guidelines and protect the recipient streams, installation of CWs at the effluent discharge point of KRPC is strongly recommended.
