Aromatic C-nitroso Compounds

Aromaticity is a notion that appeared in the mid-nineteenth century to differentiate between unsaturated hydrocarbons and formally unsaturated benzene [1–3]. At the end of the nineteenth century it seemed that cyclicity was a necessary condition for differentiation between the two, but at the beginning of the twentieth century it turned out that the above assumption was not correct because cyclooctatetraene exhibited typical properties known for polyenes [4]. The essential property of b- zene-like compounds, often identified with aromatic compounds, was low react- ity. Hence thermodynamic stability was defined as resonance energy [5, 6] and was the first quantitative measure of aromaticity. Many theoretical approaches were proposed later to estimate this quantity, and now the criterion is often considered to be the most fundamental [7]. Almost at the same time, magnetic susceptibility was used to describe aromaticity [8, 9]. Consequently, many concepts based on mag- tism were developed, probably the most effective in assessment of aromaticity being nucleus independent chemical shift (NICS) [10] or Fowler’s maps of ring currents [11]. The criterion served Schleyer as a basis for a definition of aromat- ity: “Compounds which exhibit significantly exalted diamagnetic susceptibility are aromatic. Cyclic delocalisation may also result in bond length equalization, abn- mal chemical shifts and magnetic anisotropies, as well as chemical and physical properties which reflect energetic stabilisation”[12].

Perhaps it is not inappropriate for me to begin with the comment that this book has been an interesting challenge to the translator. It is most unusual, in a text of this type, in that the style is racy, with many literary allusions and witticisms: not the easiest to translate, but a source of inspiration to continue through material that could daunt by its combinatorial complexity. Moreover, there have been many changes to the text during the translating period, reflecting the ferment that the subject of the restricted Burnside problem is passing through at present. I concur with Professor Kostrikin's "Note in Proof', where he describes the book as fortunate. I would put it slightly differently: its appearance has surely been partly instrumental in inspiring much endeavour, including such things as the paper of A. I. Adian and A. A. Razborov producing the first published recursive upper bound for the order of the universal finite group B(d,p) of prime exponent (the English version contains a different treatment of this result, due to E. I. Zel'manov); M. R. Vaughan-Lee's new approach to the subject; and finally, the crowning achievement of Zel'manov in establishing RBP for all prime-power exponents, thereby (via the classification theorem for finite simple groups and Hall-Higman) settling it for all exponents. The book is encyclopaedic in its coverage of facts and problems on RBP, and will continue to have an important influence in the area.

Around Glare: A New Aircraft Material in Context

During September 24-26, 2001, the Faculty of Aerospace Engineering of the Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands organised the Glare - the New Material for Aircraft Conference, an international conference on the relationship between design, material choice and application of aircraft materials with respect to new developments in industry. Eminent representatives from the aircraft manufacturing world, including manufacturers, airlines, airports, universities, governments and aviation authorities, were present at this conference to meet and exchange ideas - see the group photo on the next two pages. The fact that the conference was held just two weeks after ‘September 11, 2001’ put things in a rather unique perspective. The aim of the conference was to illustrate the many unique applications of the Glare family of fibre metal laminates and to provide for the exchange and distribution of information regarding this material in order to stimulate their acceptance and promote further application. The introduction of fibre metal laminates into the commercial aviation market took about 20 years’ time. Introducing new technologies should not be taken lightly, however; the aircraft industry is by nature rather conservative and innovations must therefore be proven – a paradox actually – in all possible ways before they can be introduced in real aircraft structures. Not only do technical aspects play a role in this respect; historical, cultural, economical and political issues are equally important.
