Barry's Advanced Construction of Buildings
by Stephen Emmitt Christopher A. GorseRobin Barry's Construction of Buildings was first published in 1958 in 5 volumes, rapidly becoming a standard text on construction. In its current 2 volume format Barry remains hugely popular with both students and lecturers of construction and related disciplines. The third edition of Barry's Advanced Construction of Buildings expands and deepens your understanding of construction technology. It covers the construction of larger-scale buildings (primarily residential, commercial and industrial) constructed with load bearing frames, supported by chapters on fit-out and second fix, lifts and escalators, off-site construction and a new chapter on building obsolescence and revitalisation. Functional and performance requirements of the main building elements are emphasised throughout, as is building efficiency and meeting the challenges of limiting the environmental impact of buildings. You will find the text fully up to date with the latest building regulations and construction technologies. The new edition, with supporting material at www.wiley.com/go/barrysintroduction, is an ideal information source for developing a wider and deeper understanding of construction technology.
Barry's Introduction to Construction of Buildings
by Stephen EmmittAn authoritative, well-established, comprehensive, practical, and highly illustrated guide to construction practice Based mainly on domestic and residential buildings—and filled with extensive illustrations throughout—this concise text is the ideal introduction to the subject of building construction. With a strong focus on building efficiency and meeting the challenges posed by limiting the environmental impact of buildings, and new “at a glance” summaries allowing you to grasp the salient points of each chapter, readers will find the text fully up to date with the latest building regulations and construction technology. Barry’s Introduction to Construction of Buildings, Fourth Edition starts by taking an in-depth look at the construction process and general principles of construction. It then offers comprehensive chapter coverage of site analysis, set-up, drainage and scaffolding; ground stability and foundations; floors, walls, doors, windows, roofs, stairs, and ramps; surface finishes; internal environment and energy supply; and water supply and sanitation. Deals with design, technology, site assembly, and environmental issues of domestic and residential buildings Thoroughly updated, with particular attention paid to the concept of building efficiency and improved integration of the topics covered to match current student needs New “at a glance” summaries at the beginning of each chapter A companion to Barry's Advanced Construction of Buildings, Fourth Edition Barry’s Introduction to Construction of Buildings is an excellent source of information for undergraduate students and those working towards similar NQF level 5 and 6 qualifications in building and construction.

Barry's Introduction to Construction of Buildings
by Stephen Emmitt Christopher A. GorseThe five volume series, Barry's Construction of Buildings, has been established as a standard text on building technology for many years. However, a substantial update has long been required, and while doing this the opportunity has been taken to reduce five volumes to two in a more user-friendly format. The introductory volume covers domestic construction and brings together material from volumes 1, 2 and part of 5. The extensive revision includes modern concepts on site assembly, environmental issues and safety, and features further reading.

Bars and Tombolos (large print)
by RnibThere are two plan images of coastline on this page, one at the top and one at the bottom of the page. An image border surrounds each image. There is a locator dot shown, which will be at the top left of the page when the image is the correct way up. In the top image the land fills the bottom half and the sea fills the top half of the image. Longshore drift goes from left to right. It has carried material from beaches on the left to form a bar or barrier beach across a small bay. This has made a lagoon of brackish water cut off from the sea. The bottom image shows part of the south coast of England. The land is in the top half and the sea in the bottom half of the image. The strong longshore current coming from the left (west) has carried material along the coast forming a large spit (Chesil Beach). It has grown so long it now joins the Isle of Portland in the bottom right of the image to the land forming a tombolo. Up the page from Chesil Beach is a lagoon called The Fleet. To the right of this is the coastal town of Weymouth.

The Barsden Memoirs: An Australian Transnational Adolescence (Routledge Studies in Modern History)
by Grant RodwellCovering the life of Josephus Henry Barsden from his birth in 1799 through his childhood to 16 years of age, the Barsden memoirs describe events from a Sussex smugglers’ inn, a convict ship to the colony of New South Wales, sealing and whaling expeditions to Van Diemen’s Land, and Barsden’s participation in a Tahitian civil war. The author assesses the value of memoirs, and of these memoirs in particular to students of history in respect to the transnational paradigm. He tests the historicity and veracity of their contents, and provides an engaging exegesis and graphical supplement of its contents. Of central importance is Barsden’s account of the Battle of Fe’i Pi, which was in many respects the Pacific’s equivalent to the contemporaneous Battle of Waterloo, such was its lasting impact on Pacific geopolitics. This was no ordinary childhood, and poses many questions about a transnational adolescent’s impact on major events. A fascinating read for scholars and students of Australian, Pacific, and British Colonial History, written with academic rigour but accessible to non-specialists.

Bart Giamatti: A Profile
by Mr. Robert P. MoncreiffThis vivid portrait of Bart Giamatti encompasses his entire eventful life but focuses especially on his years at Yale University (1966-1986) and his brief career as a major league baseball executive (1986-1989). As scholar, teacher, and then university president, Giamatti was an admired and respected figure on campus. He forged his academic career during turbulent decades, and his tenure in baseball was no less contentious, for as commissioner of baseball he oversaw the banishment of Cincinnati’s Pete Rose from the game for gambling. The book draws on Giamatti’s numerous writings and speeches to illuminate the character and complexities of the man and to understand the values that motivated his leadership.Bart Giamatti was a cultural conservative and institutional moderate at a time when such values were out of favor and under attack. At Yale, as a baseball executive, and indeed in all things, Giamatti championed the related values of freedom and order. Robert P. Moncreiff places Giamatti in the context of major events at Yale, recounts in detail the legal context in which the Pete Rose affair unfolded, and arrives at a nuanced understanding of this memorable man’s life.

Barter and Social Regeneration in the Argentinean Andes
by Olivia AngéDespite the pervasiveness of barter across societies, this mode of transaction has largely escaped the anthropologist’s gaze. Drawing on data from fairs in the Argentinean Andes, this book explores fairs’ embeddedness within religious celebration, arguing that barter is addressed as a sacrifice to catholic figures and local ancestors, and thus challenging a widespread view of barter as a non-monetary form of commodity exchange. Issues of value, identity, and exchange are considered, furthering our understanding of how social groups create themselves through material circulation.
The Barter Economy of the Khmer Rouge Labor Camps (The Cold War in Asia)
by Scott PribblePribble investigates the barter economies that developed in many of the labor camps established under the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia. When the Khmer Rouge abolished currency and markets in 1975, starving Cambodians created underground exchanges in labor camps throughout the country, bartering luxury items for food and other necessities, while simultaneously undermining the regime’s ideological goals of eliminating any traces of capitalism in Democratic Kampuchea. Pribble asserts three key points about the barter economy in the Khmer Rouge labor camps. First, the underground exchanges in Democratic Kampuchea provided food and medicine for desperate people subsisting under a totalitarian regime, saving the lives of countless Cambodians. Second, bartering was the riskiest way to obtain food because it was dependent upon the discretion of two or more individuals from different social classes under the threat of violent punishment, thereby altering the social dynamics of the camps. Finally, despite the regime’s extreme efforts to eliminate foreign influence from the country and impose communist ideology on millions of citizens, basic forms of market capitalism and a demand for superfluous luxury goods persisted in labor camps throughout the country. A fascinating study of the human consequences of imposing rigid ideology, that will be of particular interest to scholars and students of political history and Southeast Asian history.
