Writing the History of the African Diaspora (Elements in Historical Theory and Practice)

by null Toyin Falola

This Element is an analysis of the African Diaspora. It will define the African Diaspora and how the concepts behind the term came to be socially and historically engineered. The African diaspora is then placed into a broader historical context where the diverse, global, and overlapping histories of Africa's ancient-ongoing diasporas will be explored. In particular, themes of injustice, agency, resistance, and diversity (regarding people, diasporas, and experiences) will feature heavily. Through this exploration, this Element will interrogate dominating narratives regarding African diaspora-related discourse, seeking to address prevailing ideas that inadequately capture the true complexity and nuance of the subject. It does so to construct a more comprehensive understanding of the subject matter while lining out a more holistic approach to thinking about the very nature of 'diaspora.' Finally, this Element will analyze the present circumstances of the African diaspora, bringing into conversation a progressively global and connected world.

A Child of Science (Nhb Modern Plays Ser.)

by Gareth Farr

'One day this will work. One day we will gift two honest, decent, trusting volunteers a baby. I know this more than anything else in the world. I know it in my soul. We will do that.' In 1978, three pioneering doctors changed the world of fertility as we know it. Supported by an army of immensely brave women from all over the UK, Patrick Steptoe, Robert Edwards and Jean Purdy achieved the impossible: they created human life in vitro. Faced with fierce criticism and hostility, and hounded by the media for 'playing God', trials had to be kept largely under wraps. But the trio's determination to give hope to the thousands of families struggling to conceive eventually led to the first 'test-tube baby' and the creation of IVF, a procedure which has since supported the birth of over twelve million babies worldwide. Gareth Farr's play A Child of Science is a fictionalised account of this true story of ambition and courage, based on extensive research and interviews with embryologists and fertility doctors, as well as those affected by and enabled by IVF. It was first performed at Bristol Old Vic in 2024, directed by Matthew Dunster.

Acupuncture for Surviving Adversity: Acts of Self-Preservation

by Yvonne R. Farrell

Unique in its approach, the new book by Yvonne Farrell provides a framework for understanding how effective the channel system is at supporting survival through allowing the body to hide or store trauma, stress and burnout in acts of self-preservation. She looks at how these latencies are created by the different channel systems, why they are created and the cost of these to the individual in terms of chronic imbalance or disease. Patients can become stuck in survival mode and the book explores how to use acupuncture to bypass the human biological reluctance for change and reach the body on a cellular level. The book sheds light on the deeply rooted pathologies of somatization, bad habits and lifestyle choices, and contains a number of case studies designed to illustrate the book's theories and help the practitioner in the diagnosis and treatment of their patient.Acupuncture for Surviving Adversity is about moving patients beyond survival and to a state of balance and wellbeing using acupuncture, giving practitioners the tools that will allow trauma survivors and other patients to reset themselves.

To present more comprehensive information, it covers biomass as anti-aging, anti-acne, sunscreen, anti-melanin, and antimicrobial. Regarding the close contact system with the human in daily life, cosmetic needs to comply with the human system. Therefore, one special chapter is dedicated to presenting the compatibility view of biobased cosmetics in the human body system. Nanomaterials in cosmetics have started to be used by many beauty companies asindicated by nano-related patents. The nanotechnology applications in cosmetics also provide future trends in bio-based cosmetics. Some forms of nanomaterials that have been reported include liposomes, nanoemulsion, nanocapsules, solid lipid nanoparticles, nanocrystals, nano-silver, nano-gold, hydrogel, etc. Iodinated Aloe Vera formulations within polymeric complexes present examples of bio-antimicrobials and such compounds are at the crossroads between pharmaceutics and cosmetics. Finally, the environmental and safety impacts of biobased cosmetic development are discussed as the closure in the last chapter. This book is expected to provide insightful information for those dealing with biomass or doing research on biomass for sustainable living. Moreover, it is also suitable for policymakers to get the new and latest information on valorizing local biomass while expanding its usage for cosmeceutical purposes. Military Medicine and the Hidden Costs of War (Bridging the Gap)

by Tanisha M. Fazal

A highly original comprehensive history of US military medicine. Decisions to go to war are often framed in cost-benefit terms, and typically such assessments do not factor in longer term costs. However, recent dramatic improvements in American military medicine have had an unanticipated effect: saving more soldiers' lives has vastly increased long-term, downstream costs of war with profound consequences for global politics in an era of heightened great power competition. In Military Medicine and the Hidden Costs of War, Tanisha M. Fazal traces the modern history of medical treatment and casualty rates in American conflicts from the Civil War to the more recent counterinsurgency wars. As she shows, wars became increasingly survivable for wounded troops, to the point now where a large majority of wounded soldiers survive. Yet the human and financial implications of this steep increase in the wounded-to-killed ratio are dramatic, and her powerful analysis of this shift provides a necessary corrective to how we understand the costs of war. For each major conflict, Fazal analyzes the weapons used, injuries sustained, and policies put in place for veterans' care and pensions. As she argues, these improvements have significant financial and deeply personal implications for the returned wounded and their families, as well as the US government and its citizenry. Fazal's analysis highlights the significance of policymakers underestimating the costs of war, which in turn makes it easier both to initiate and continue military action abroad, contributing to Americas' penchant for engaging in so-called "endless wars." A sweeping political history, Military Medicine and the Hidden Costs of War will fundamentally change our understanding of the lasting consequences of America's wars.
