The Resurgence of Military Coups and Democratic Relapse in Africa

by Adeoye Akinola

This book presents the reality of democratic reversals and waves of coups cutting throughAfrica, explores the political economy of coups, and through a case studyapproach, provides a nuanced analysis of the negative impacts of coups inAfrica, and interrogates the roles of African regional organisations incurtailing coups and foreign powers in distorting the security architecture ofAfrican states, particularly in the Sahel region. It proffers sustainablepolicy templates for political development, professionalism of the military, and the subsequent withdrawal of the military from African politics. Apart fromits policy relevance, it will serve as a resource pool for researchers workingin the area of African political development, peace and security, and securitysector reforms. With the incremental exit of France from the Sahel, the bookwill also offer a nuanced perspective on the ‘scramble for the soul’ of theSahel by non-Western powers, such as China, Russia, Turkey, and Saudi Arabia.

Wirtschaftliche Nutzung von Abwärmequellen: Randbedingungen, technische Voraussetzungen und Wärmenetze

by Wolfgang Heße Bert Oschatz

Innovations for Healthcare and Wellbeing: Digital Technologies, Ecosystems and Entrepreneurship (Contributions to Management Science)

by Tessaleno Devezas Serena Cubico Igor Ilin João Carlos Correia Leitão Evgeny Schlyakhto

Various socio-demographic, medical, technological, and managerial trends determine the emergence and development of the concept of the “Smart Hospital”, as well as the development and implementation of appropriate complex architectural models in the management practice of medical organizations. In turn, such medical organizations require an innovative health care ecosystem to provide medically and economically efficient healthcare services. This book examines various approaches to the modern healthcare system to provide an effective internal environment for the medical organization as well as an effective external environment for better interaction with all stakeholders of the greater healthcare system. It addresses the challenges of digital technology adoption in specialized areas (e.g., cardiology, surgery, neonatology, etc.) and of the dissemination of knowledge, technology, innovation, and entrepreneurial initiatives as well as communication between stakeholders. It then explores the development of the Smart Hospital by analyzing the internal architecture of medical organizations, key factors of their transformation, architecture of IT and digital technologies and data-driven management. Finally, this book explores the ways in which entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial leadership promote innovation and well-being in different organizational contexts, with special emphasis on human resource management, intellectual capital, and abusive leadership of public, social, and business sector contexts.

Approximate Models of Mechanics of Composites: An Asymptotic Approach

by Jan Awrejcewicz Igor V. Andrianov Galina A. Starushenko

Approximate Models of Mechanics of Composites: An Asymptotic Approach is an essential guide to constructing asymptotic models and mathematical methods to correctly identify the mechanical behavior of composites. It provides methodology for predicting and evaluating composite behavior in various structures, leading to accurate mathematical and physical assessments. The book estimates the error of approximations through comparing asymptotic solutions with the results of numerical and analytical solutions to gain a holistic view of the data. The authors have developed asymptotic models based on mathematical and physical rigorous approaches, which include three-phase models of fibrous composites, a modernized three-phase composite model with cylindrical inclusions, and models of two-dimensional composites of hexagonal structure. Also covered are two-phase models of composites related to the Maxwell formula and a percolation transition model for elastic problems based on the self-consistency method and Padé approximations. By obtaining analytical expressions to effectively characterize composite materials, their physical and geometric parameters can be accurately assessed. This book suits engineers and students working in material science, mechanical engineering, physics, and mathematics, as well as composite materials in industries such as construction, transport, aerospace, and chemical engineering.

The Routledge Companion to Asian Cinemas (Routledge Media and Cultural Studies Companions)

Balancing leading scholars with emerging trendsetters, this Companion offers fresh perspectives on Asian cinemas and charts new constellations in the field with significance far beyond Asian cinema studies.Asian cinema studies – at the intersection of film/media studies and area studies – has rapidly transformed under the impact of globalization, compounded by the resurgence of a variety of nationalist discourses as well as counter-discourses, new socio-political movements, and the possibilities afforded by digital media. Differentiated experiences of climate change and the COVID-19 pandemic have further heightened interest in the digital everyday and the renewed geopolitical divide between East and West, and between North and South. Thematized into six sections, the 46 chapters in this anthology address established paradigms of scholarship and viewership in Asian cinemas like extreme genres, cinephilia, festivals, and national cinema, while also highlighting political and archival concerns that firmly situate Asian cinemas within local and translocal milieus. Underrepresented cinemas of North Korea, Bangladesh, Laos, Indonesia, Malaysia, Taiwan, Thailand, and Cambodia, appear here amidst a broader cross-regional, comparative approach. An ideal resource for film, media, cultural and Asian studies researchers, students, and scholars, as well as informed readers with an interest in Asian cinemas.

The 21st Century in 100 Games (Games and Contemporary Culture)

by Aditya Deshbandhu

The 21st Century in 100 Games is an interactive public history of the contemporary world. It creates a ludological retelling of the 21st century through 100 games that were announced, launched, and played from the turn of the century. The book analyzes them and then uses the games as a means of entry to examine both key events in the 21st century and the evolution of the gaming industry. Adopting a tri-pronged perspective — the reviewer, the academic, and an industry observer — it studies games as ludo-narratological artefacts and resituates games in a societal context by examining how they affect and are engaged with by players, reviewers, the gaming community, and the larger gaming industry. This book will be a must read for readers interested in video games, new media, digital culture (s), culture studies, and history.
