Towards A Westphalia for the Middle East

by Brendan Simms Michael Axworthy Patrick Milton

It was the original forever war, which went on interminably, fuelled by religious fanaticism, personal ambition, fear of hegemony, and communal suspicion. It dragged in all the neighbouring powers. It was punctuated by repeated failed ceasefires. It inflicted suffering beyond belief and generated waves of refugees. No, this is not Syria today, but the Thirty Years' War (1618-48), which turned Germany and much of central Europe into a disaster zone. The Thirty Years' War is often cited as a parallel in discussions of the Middle East. The Peace of Westphalia, which ended the conflict in 1648, has featured strongly in such discussions, usually with the observation that recent events in some parts of the region have seen the collapse of ideas of state sovereignty--ideas that supposedly originated with the 1648 settlement. Axworthy, Milton and Simms argue that the Westphalian treaties, far from enshrining state sovereignty, in fact reconfigured and strengthened a structure for legal resolution of disputes, and provided for intervention by outside guarantor powers to uphold the peace settlement. This book argues that the history of Westphalia may hold the key to resolving the new long wars in the Middle East today.

Die bedrohte Ordnung der Vielfalt: Kulturelle Hybridität in Istrien, 1870-1914 (Histoire #218)

by Daniela Simon

Improvised Lives: Rhythms of Endurance in an Urban South (After the Postcolonial)

by AbdouMaliq Simone

The poor and working people in cities of the South find themselves in urban spaces that are conventionally construed as places to reside or inhabit. But what if we thought of popular districts in more expansive ways that capture what really goes on within them? In such cities, popular districts are the settings of more uncertain operations that take place under the cover of darkness, generating uncanny alliances among disparate bodies, materials and things and expanding the urban sensorium and its capacities for liveliness. In this important new book AbdouMaliq Simone explores the nature of these alliances, portraying urban districts as sites of enduring transformations through rhythms that mediate between the needs of residents not to draw too much attention to themselves and their aspirations to become a small niche of exception. Here we discover an urban South that exists as dense rhythms of endurance that turn out to be vital for survival, connectivity, and becoming.

Agile eHealth Usability Evaluation: Development of the ToUsE toolbox to foster the usability of eHealth systems

by Irina Sinabell

The integration of usability evaluations into iterative software development processes is becoming increasingly relevant, as gathering feedback from prospective users is crucial to improving the usability of eHealth systems. Traditional approaches to eHealth usability evaluation, however, are difficult to reconcile with the iterative software development process, which is why there is an increasing need for agile usability evaluation. Despite the existence of approaches to agile usability evaluation, it is unclear whether they are suitable to rapidly evaluate patient-centered eHealth systems being iteratively developed in health care applicable, for prospective users such as elderly persons suffering from age-related declines. This research includes an innovative and comprehensive toolbox called ToUsE, toolbox for eHealth usability evaluation, which consists of more than 40 rapidly deployable and potentially useful eHealth usability evaluation methods developed by the author. The ToUsEtoolbox is intended for use by software developers, medical informaticians, usability experts, or medical professionals who aim at performing an eHealth usability evaluation. The book provides detailed descriptions of all the eHealth usability evaluation methods included in ToUsE.

Soft Tissue Simulants (Biomedical Materials for Multi-functional Applications)

by Gurpreet Singh Arnab Chanda

Soft tissue simulants, essential for automotive and ballistic testing, medical, and surgical training, have traditionally relied on cadavers and animal tissues. However, their biomechanical properties change with time due to dehydration after death and the biomechanics of the animal models cannot be translated and compared with the human tissues. This book compiles various synthetic tissues used in these applications, addressing their characterization and industry-wide applications. While older simulants lack biofidelity, recent advancements in biofidelic soft tissue simulants offer promising alternatives, yet technology transfer remains limited. This book fills the gap by exploring each simulant's characteristics and current trends, facilitating their adoption in clinical and academic settings. These synthetic tissues have the potential to replace live tissues in surgical training, streamlining biosafety approvals. They also benefit academic researchers by reducing costs and time in biomechanical testing. Anticipated to be the first of its kind, this comprehensive reference book will showcase recent advancements in soft tissue simulant development, serving as a cornerstone text in tissue engineering & biomedical engineering, medical simulation, biomechanics, and related fields.

Public Health: A Global Perspective

by Hari Singh

Public health is the science and art of improving the health and well-being of communities. Public health interventions go beyond individual healthcare to focus on preventing diseases and injuries, promoting healthy behaviors, and addressing sociocultural, economic, and environmental factors that impact health. While topics of public health, such as maternal health, child health, and epidemiology of infectious and noncommunicable diseases, require familiarity with clinical terms and concepts, the author demystifies medical knowledge to make it accessible to a wider audience. Challenges faced by low-income countries, as well as success stories from developed nations, are included to make the book relevant for global readers. With a focus on essentials and priority issues, the author employs simple and straightforward language to present situational cases that shed light on global public health challenges and possible interventions. To stimulate analytical thinking and encourage readers to approach the subject with scientific rigor, concepts and facts are substantiated with their background, rationale, or application. Readers should be able to relate learnings with their field experience. While this book is primarily for public health practitioners, including community health nurses and physicians, social workers, and health managers, it may be a valuable resource for anyone interested in public health and its application in creating healthier societies.

When I see my patients pre-operatively, what risk factors should I warn them about that may increase their chance for a post-operative infection? I have a 65-year-old female who fell and suffered a central cord syndrome. What’s her prognosis and are there other types of incomplete spinal cord syndromes? I have a 34-year-old patient with back pain and some buttock pain for two weeks. When should I get an MRI? Do I need to perform neuromonitoring for every spine surgery? The cost appears to be relatively high and I want to be selective about its use. I have a 64-year-old female who was fused posteriorly in the lumbar spine and I need to correct her lordosis. What’s the difference between a Smith-Peterson and a pedicle subtraction osteotomy?
