Teen Substance Use, Mental Health and Body Image: Practical Strategies for Support

by Ian Macdonald

This practical resource looks at the relationship between mental illness and substance use disorders in young people. While studies show the link between the two, drug use is often mistakenly viewed as 'deviant' behaviour rather than as a coping mechanism for unmet needs. This book offers schools and youth settings a different approach to both supporting young people and implementing preventative measures. The concept of risk taking in young people is explored, as well as how stress, low self-esteem and body image issues can lead to substance use, including performance enhancing drugs and high caffeine drinks. Examples of how to address these issues through PSHE are addressed in each chapter, as well as tips for supporting individual pupils from expert practitioners and researchers in the field.

Telemedicine for Adolescent and Young Adult Health Care: A Case-based Guide

by Yolanda N. Evans Sarah A. Golub Gina M. Sequeira

While there are general texts on telemedicine and guidelines on the use of telemedicine in pediatrics, there are no texts focused specifically on the provision of health care to adolescents and young adults using telemedicine. Adolescents and young adults have more unique health care needs than both adults and children, including the need to receive developmentally appropriate services and care that may be provided in settings outside of the standard clinical office (such as school-based care). In addition, in most US states, adolescents are capable of providing consent for some but not all medical care, highlighting the critical importance of providing services in a manner that adheres to regulations around consent and confidentiality. Telemedicine for Adolescent and Young Adult Health Care offers readers case-based content written by experts in the fields of adolescent medicine and telemedicine. There are a variety of chapters that include anemphasis on equity, diversity, and inclusion and will include local and federal rules, regulations, and considerations for ensuring privacy in the modern electronic health record. The first chapter offers a general overview and history of telemedicine. The next one focuses on telemedicine and epidemics. The chapters in the middle detail a variety of topics related to telemedicine such as confidentiality, equity, telemedicine and learners, school-based care, telemedicine in primary care and ambulatory consultative care. The book closes out by emphasizing additional populations such as youth involved in the juvenile carcel system, homeless/housing insecure, foster involved youth and youth with developmental delay. It is a valuable resource for adolescent medicine specialists, pediatricians, primary care physicians and any other professional who treats the adolescent population.

Television Sitcom and Cultural Crisis (Routledge Advances in Television Studies)

by Holly Willson Holladay Chandler L. Classen

This volume demonstrates that television comedies are conduits through which we might resist normative ways of thinking about cultural crises.By drawing on Gramscian notion of crisis and the understanding that crises are overlapping, interconnected, and mutually constitutive, the essays in this collection demonstrate that situation comedies do more than make us laugh; they also help us understand the complexities of our social world’s moments of crisis. Each chapter takes up the televisual representation of a modern cultural crisis in a contemporary sitcom and is grounded in the extensive body of literature that suggests that levity is a powerful mechanism to make sense of and cope with these difficult cultural experiences.Divided into thematic sections that highlight crises of institutions and systems, identity and representation, and speculation and futurism, this book will interest scholars of media and cultural studies, political economy, communication studies, and humor studies.

Telling Stories of Pain and Hope: Museums in South Africa and Ireland (ISSN)

by Ruth Teer-Tomaselli Mary Elizabeth Lange

The histories of South Africa and Ireland have been tumultuous and traumatic. Both countries have experienced political repression, sectarian violence and oppression that still impact the spiritual well-being of people today. Their parallel histories are of colonialism, displacement and division, and a fight for land and sovereignty. Both countries have embarked on a process of healing and reconciliation, yet there is an ongoing struggle for reparation and/or reversal of previous injustices.Recognising that museums of the 21st century have the potential to contribute to catharsis and mutual understanding, this book reflects on selected museums in South Africa and Ireland that commemorate the pain of the past and the hope for the future. The primary focus of the book is the way in which museum guides, curators and managers share their stories and the stories of their ancestors, and the stories of other people’s ancestors who were caught up in the conflict while interweaving the stories of the authors as well.Print edition not for sale in Sub Saharan Africa.

Telomeres: Chromosome Sentinels

by Carole Saintomé

Telomeres are specialized DNA–protein structures that protect the ends of chromosomes to maintain their integrity. They are chromosome sentinels. This book, written by multiple authors, presents current knowledge and the most recent discoveries relating to telomeres. The first chapters describe telomere structures (DNA and proteins), organization, dynamics and replication in a range of organisms including ciliates, yeast and mammals. The following chapters cover mechanisms that maintain telomere length involving telomerase and Alternative Lengthening Telomeres (ALT) mechanisms. Interestingly, telomeres are transcribed into repetitive RNA called TERRA (Telomeric repeat-containing RNA), the state of the art regarding mammalian telomere transcripts is presented here. Two chapters are dedicated to the description of how telomere biology impacts the development of cancer and how their disfunctions induce telomeropathies (telomere biology disorders). Finally, the book ends with a chapter presenting telomere and telomerase targeting agents as potential anticancer agents, a promising therapeutic approach.

Templars: The Knights Who Made Britain

by Steve Tibble

A gripping account of the Knights Templar, challenging received wisdom to show how these devout medieval knights played a profound role in making modern Britain The Knights Templar have an enduring reputation—but not one they would recognize. Originally established in the twelfth century to protect pilgrims, the Order is remembered today for heresy, fanaticism, and even satanism. In this bold new interpretation, Steve Tibble sets out to correct the record. The Templars, famous for their battles on Christendom’s eastern front, were in fact dedicated peace-mongers at home. They influenced royal strategy and policy, created financial structures, and brokered international peace treaties—primarily to ensure that men, money, and material could be transferred more readily to the east. Charting the rise of the Order under Henry I through to its violent suppression following the fall of Acre, Tibble argues that these medieval knights were essential to the emergence of an early English state. Revealing the true legacy of the British Templars, he shows how a small group helped shape medieval Britain while simultaneously fighting in the name of the Christian Middle East.

Temporomandibular Disorders: Manual therapy, exercise, and needling

by César Fernández-de-las-Peñas

An authoritative and comprehensive account of the assessment and conservative management of temporomandibular disorders. Recent emphasis has been on 'evidence-based practice' at the expense of the clinical reality which should also take account of clinician expertise and patient preference. A sound research base is not always available. This text addresses the clinical reality of having to make decisions using other sources of knowledge in the absence of a comprehensive scientific rationale. It advocates clinical and evidence-informed practice - an approach which acknowledges the value of clinician experience and expertise as well as research findings.Compiled and edited by two highly regarded and experienced practitioners, researchers and authors who have already published many books and journal articles in the field. With contributions from a mix of 28 internationally-based clinicians and clinician-researchers allowing the text to highlight both current best evidence and clinicians' expertise and experience. Contributors include talented young clinicians as well as established experts in orthopaedic physiotherapy and world-level expert researchers.

Tensorkalkül mit objektorientierten Matrizen für numerische Methoden in Mechanik und Ingenieurwissenschaften: Grundlagen und Funktionen für Tensor-/Matrix-Algorithmen der Finite-Elemente-Methode

by Udo F. Meißner
