Intergenerational Harmony: Unleashing the Strategic Power of Generational Synergy (Emerald Points)

by Arpan S. Yagnik

We find ourselves in a period of human history in which five generations coexist simultaneously. Not surprisingly, the success of any enterprise in any area of society is determined by the ability of individuals from different generations to collaborate productively. At the same time, intergenerational disharmony poses a range of risks including social conflict, educational imbalance, political discord, family fragmentation, religious decline and corporate inefficiency. While the composition of multiple generations within a team is a distinct asset, its potential is diminished by the absence of harmony between members of different generations. In Intergenerational Harmony: Unleashing the Strategic Power of Generational Synergy, author Arpan S. Yagnik delves into the concept of multigenerational coexistence, highlighting its impact on various sectors where multiple generations are navigating an evolving landscape. Across work, education, religion, government and family, the harmony between generations becomes a pivotal factor for long-term success. Addressing concerns such as resource and talent loss, Yagnik presents the concept of Intergenerational Harmony (IH), wherein generational stakeholders collaborate synergistically to harness their collective strengths. This practical guide offers insightful instances and examples of IH implementation, emphasizing empathy, respect, trust and honesty as its core values. By fostering IH, institutions can thrive in this era of multigenerational coexistence, countering challenges and paving the way for a harmonious future. Looking beyond generational labels and stereotypes to envision a harmonious, empathetic society, Yagnik pivots how we think about age and intergenerational relationships in every area and at every stage of our lives.

Sustainable Business in the Arab Region: Corporate Social Responsibility vs Culture (Emerald Points)

by Randa Diab-Bahman

Existing research on corporate social responsibility (CSR) is written from a largely Westernized viewpoint, but what is the relationship between CSR, organizational – and wider – culture on the sustainability of businesses in the Arab region? Also, what impact do Islamic beliefs and values have on ethical business practices? Randa Diab-Bahman explores the understanding and expression of CSR in an Arab context; through a qualitative pilot study with prominent CSR experts (people with leading roles in CSR in the private, public and non-profit sector) in a predominately Islamic setting. Sustainable Business in the Arab Region confirms the importance of cultural elements in influencing the understanding and expression of CSR. Interestingly, the importance of the Islamic religion and specific aspects of its religious doctrine are found to be particularly important to understanding why CSR may be expressed differently in an Arab context. The implications of these findings are important for policymakers, as it can help them better align their CSR initiatives and better understand their possible impact on stakeholders. Not only relevant to those researching CSR across different organizational cultures, the findings here are important to anyone doing sustainable business globally.

New Approaches to Flexible Working (The New Business Culture)

by Fons Trompenaars Peter Woolliams

Whilst Covid-19 suddenly forced many workers (who could) to work from home which prompted many rapidly produced anecdotal publications about the effects, there has been little or no organised evidence-driven assembled body of knowledge leading to a conceptual framework to inform the evolving future of flexible working. Dictums from management pleading employees to return to the office are highly subjective. There remains a conspicuous absence of a rigorous understanding for both employers and employees to provide a framework for identifying best practice and how the opportunities can be best synergised. The authors’ longitudinal research on traditional frameworks and practices on flexible working they had begun long before Covid-19 serious shortcomings in job design and ways of working how organisations utilise their people. New Approaches to Flexible Working presents a new framework that explores the perspectives of employers and employees in the changing world of work. The authors demonstrate that reconciling the competing demands of employers and employees through flexible working can elicit ways of working that can secure optimum contributions from employees whilst enriching the organisation with increasing job satisfaction of employees’ changing expectations. Each volume in this series will explore failing established models and propose new conceptual frameworks with practical approaches. International case studies enrich the arguments and findings. Purchase of this book includes exclusive access to app-based content, enabling readers to explore the application of specific concepts in further detail.
