The Philosophy of Symmetry (Elements in the Philosophy of Physics)

by null Nicholas Joshua Yii Wye Teh

This Element is a concise, high-level introduction to the philosophy of physical symmetry. It begins with the notion of 'physical representation' (the kind of empirical representation of nature that we effect in doing physics), and then lays out the historically and conceptually central case of physical symmetry that frequently falls under the rubric of 'the Relativity Principle,' or 'Galileo's Ship.' This material is then used as a point of departure to explore the key hermeneutic challenge concerning physical symmetry in the past century, namely understanding the physical significance of the notion of 'local' gauge symmetry. The approach taken stresses both the continuity with historically important themes such as the Relativity Principle, as well as novel insights earned by working with contemporary representational media such as the covariant phase space formalism.

Disaster and Climate Risk Education: Insights from Knowledge to Action (Disaster Risk Reduction)

by Ayse Yildiz Rajib Shaw

Education serves as a cornerstone for gaining knowledge and taking initiative. However, despite efforts in disaster and climate risk education (DCRE), a gap often exists between awareness and meaningful action. To bridge this gap and promote a progression from awareness to empowerment, we offer the KIDA (Knowledge Interest Desire Action) framework. The foundation of this framework is a collaboration between schools, communities, and families, which calls for support from educational boards and local governments. Following international tragedies like the Turkey-Syria earthquake of 2023, as well as the ever-changing difficulties posed by climate change, DCRE has to be given priority immediately. Our book proposes a comprehensive strategy that includes governance, capacity building, education in schools and the community, and technology integration. Our insights, analyses, and practical policy suggestions are based on multidisciplinary research and worldwide case studies, with the goal of strengthening resilience and cultivating a generation committed to sustainability. This book provides a comprehensive exploration of DCRE. It aims to prepare individuals and communities to face the challenges of a changing world head-on by improving knowledge and promoting preparedness.

Pseudo-retranslation (Palgrave Studies in Translating and Interpreting)

by Mehmet Yildiz

This book presents pseudo-retranslations as a new phenomenon of translational intertextuality, revealing how pseudo-retranslations establish large networks of intertextuality across academic works, how academic authors have recourse to this procedure as they create their academic texts, and how pseudo-retranslations contribute to the dissemination of translation-distorted scholarly knowledge and lead to epistemically polluted academic ecosystems. Pseudo-retranslation can be defined as an academic author’s partial or complete exploitation of another academic author’s translation and presenting it as a retranslation of the source text. This phenomenon, first documented in Yildiz (2021), arises from academic authors’ failure to refer to or translate primary sources – particularly in English. Since there occurs no actual retranslation process, this procedure is called pseudo-retranslation. Using a range of academic texts from the Turkish context as case studies, the author presents the integral constituents of this phenomenon, and the behavioural patterns of its renderers. This book will be of particular interest to academics and postgraduates in the field of translation studies and (corpus) linguistics.

Drivers of Innovation: Entrepreneurship, Education, and Finance in Asia

by Yong Suk Lee and Fei Yan

Innovation and entrepreneurship rank highly on the strategic agenda of most countries today. As global economic competition intensifies, many national policymakers now recognize the central importance of entrepreneurship education and the building of financial institutions to promote long-term innovation, entrepreneurship, and economic growth. Drivers of Innovation brings together scholars from the United States and Asia to explore those education and finance policies that might be conducive to accelerating innovation and developing a more entrepreneurial workforce in East Asia. Some of the questions covered include: How do universities in China and Singapore experiment with new types of learning in their quest to promote innovation and entrepreneurship? Is there a need to transform the traditional university into an "entrepreneurial university"? What are the recent developments in and outstanding challenges to financing innovation in China and Japan? What is the government's role in promoting innovative entrepreneurship under the shadow of big business in South Korea? What can we learn about the capacity of services to drive innovation-led growth in India? Drivers of Innovation will serve as a valuable reference for scholars and policymakers working to develop human capital for innovation in Asia.

Shifting Gears in Innovation Policy: Strategies from Asia

by Yong Suk Lee, Takeo Hoshi, and Gi-Wook Shin

In the six Asian countries focused on in this book—China, India, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, and Taiwan—high economic growth has been achieved in many industrial sectors, the catch-up phase of growth has ended or is about to end, and technological frontiers have been reached in many industries. These countries can no longer rely on importing or imitating new technology from abroad and expanding imports, and instead have to develop their own innovations to maintain growth. The policy tools they often used to advance "innovation," for the most traditional industrial policies of identifying promising industries and promoting them, will no longer be effective. And indeed, governments in Asia have recently put forward new policies, such as China's push for mass entrepreneurship and innovation. Domestic conditions in Asian economies have also started to change. Many countries are facing rapidly aging populations and low birth rates: Japan's population, declining for several years, is the first population decline not caused by war or disease in the modern world; South Korea's labor force started to shrink in 2018 as well; China's huge population will start to age, even as a large part of the population remains poor. Facing these challenges, today Asia is at a juncture. East Asia as a whole has greater real economic output than North America, South and Southeast Asia possess enormous economic potential due to size and resources, and countries within Asia are becoming more connected in both trade and diplomacy. It is at this juncture that the authors of Shifting Gears examine and reassess Asia's innovation and focus on national innovation strategies and regional cluster policies that can promote entrepreneurship and innovation in the larger Asia-Pacific. Chapters explore how institutions and policies affect incentives for innovation and entrepreneurship; whether Asia's innovation systems are substantially different from those of other countries, and in which ways, and whether there are any promising strategies for promoting innovation.

Post-choreography: Jérôme Bel’s Choreography and Movement in Malfunction (ISSN)

by Shuntaro Yoshida

This book sheds light on the practice of French choreographer Jérôme Bel, who is active in the fields of performing arts and contemporary art.Shuntaro Yoshida examines a case study of collective creation involving the choreographer and a group of amateur workshop participants. The focus is on Atelier Danse et Voix (Dance and Voice Workshop) (2014) and workshops held with local diverse participants in Brussels, Venice, and Munich after the cancellation of the Dance and Voice Workshop. This study elucidates Bel’s creative method by exploring the relationship between choreographer and participants in a situation where the typical framework of actors has been expanded. The focus of the case study is not so much the choreographic methodology itself, but the relationship between the method and the participants and the ways in which the choreographer cedes creative decision-making power to participants. In order to investigate Bel’s creative method, this study makes use of participant observation field notes taken during a rehearsal. Additional data sources include Bel’s emailed materials, performance programs, and interviews with participants. This book will be of great interest to students and scholars in theater, performance, and dance studies.

Peking to Paris: The Ultimate Driving Adventure

by Philip Young

10,000 miles, the greatest overland drive between two capital cities ... in the wheel-tracks of the original pioneers who blazed a trail in 1907 to prove that cars could now go anywhere ... and 100 years later, a total of 130 veteran, vintage and classic cars from 26 different countries recreate the same great adventure ... pounding down the vast empty spaces of the Gobi Desert ... Mongolia ... Russian Steppes ... racing for a bottle of champagne. The official record of the centennial re-enactment of a great motoring milestone: the 1907 Peking to Paris race. Man and machine against the elements, driving where no car has gone before ... that was the impossible challenge of 1907, when a handful of buccaneering madcap motorists took up the idea of a Paris newspaper to prove that the car could now go anywhere by driving the huge distance between two capital cities - Peking to Paris. To mark the 100th anniversary of the original Great Race , over 100 cars set out to drive the original route used by Prince Borghese in 1907. They ranged from authentic veteran Italas and vintage Bentleys to classic Aston Martins, and pretty much everything in-between. Drivers of 26 different nationalities came together to test their wits and their cars by driving 40 days from the Great Wall of China, across the Gobi Desert. After the Gobi came ten days of wilderness, crossing Mongolia's vast plains to Russia, then on to Moscow s Red Square and St Petersburg, Estonia, Latvia, Poland and Germany, the survivors finally rolling into Paris for an amazing party. Even though 100 years had passed since the first groundbreaking event, today's rally enthusiasts discovered that in Mongolia, conditions of poor fuel, problems of food and water, and finding the way to distant horizons remained a challenge exactly as faced by the original pioneers. This is the inside story of the great driving efforts and human endeavour required to complete an amazingly challenging route. With 250 photos, official maps and inside information, it is a fascinating read for any motor enthusiast. The book also briefly describes the original event, including previously unpublished photographs.

miRNAomics and Stress Management in Plants

by Peerzada Yasir Yousuf Peerzada Arshid Shabir Khalid Rehman Hakeem

Plants, being sessile, are negatively affected by the biotic and abiotic (environmental) stresses, reducing plant growth, productivity, and quality to a larger extent. Plants have evolved different physiological, biochemical, and molecular mechanisms to combat these stress conditions to maintain their growth, development, and productivity. Understanding the mechanisms involved in the plant response to stress conditions is the foremost step in the development of stress-tolerant plants. One of the important adaptations to stress conditions is the precise and fine regulation of gene expression in both time and space. Although gene regulation occurs at different levels through different mechanisms, the most crucial is at the level of transcription. One of the important posttranscriptional gene regulatory mechanisms used by the plants to restore and maintain cellular homeostasis during the stress conditions are microRNAs.MicroRNAs, a group of approximately 22-nucleotide-long, non-coding RNAs, have recently been identified as a new class of regulators governing gene expression at the post-transcriptional level. MiRNAs can silence genes either by guiding the degradation of the target mRNAs or by repressing the mRNA translation. Plant miRNAs have been demonstrated to regulate many genes involved in various developmental processes, for example, auxin signaling, organ polarity/radial patterning, developmental transitions, and secondary metabolism regulation. Moreover, increasing evidence indicates the role of plant miRNA-guided gene regulation in response to biotic and abiotic stresses. High-throughput sequencing approaches have significantly elucidated the identification and functional characterization of numerous miRNAs in plants. Understanding the role and mechanism of action of miRNAs during abiotic and biotic stresses can potentially offer new approaches to improve plant growth and productivity. This unique book covers the different aspects of plant microRNAomics including the discovery, biogenesis, role in different stress conditions, and applications of microRNAs in developing stress-tolerant plants. Chapters cover the updated knowledge in the field of plant microRNA research. The book, miRNAomics and Stress Management in Plants, intends to demonstrate the breadth of research and the significant advances that have been made in understanding the role of miRNAs in the plant development and stress management. This comprehensive volume will be of value to plant physiologists, plant biochemists, geneticists, molecular biologists, agronomists, environmental researchers, and graduate and undergraduate students of plant science.
