Islam in Russia: Formations of Tolerance

by Diana Galeeva

Islam in Russia is a rare scholarly attempt to understand the tolerant nature of Islam in the modern Russian Federation since the state’s official acceptance of Islam. The book explores the key factors that have contributed, over time, to the establishment of a co-existent form of Islam in modern multi-ethnic and multinational Russia. It also probes discussion of the role that Russian Muslim intellectuals have played in forming contemporary Russian Islam. It concludes that the co-existent form of Islam in Russia can be linked to three key factors: its historical emergence, the intellectual culture, and strong regional identities. This original and engaging examination of the development and identity of Islam in Russia is a useful resource for students and scholars of Global Islam, Islam in Europe, History of Russia, Islamic History, Islamic Thought and Modern Religious History.

Forms of Life: Aesthetics and Biopolitics in German Culture (Signale: Modern German Letters, Cultures, and Thought)

by Andreas Gailus

In Forms of Life, Andreas Gailus argues that the neglect of aesthetics in most contemporary theories of biopolitics has resulted in an overly restricted conception of life. He insists we need a more flexible notion of life: one attuned to the interplay and conflict between its many dimensions and forms. Forms of Life develops such a notion through the meticulous study of works by Kant, Goethe, Kleist, Nietzsche, Wittgenstein, Benn, Musil, and others. Gailus shows that the modern conception of "life" as a generative, organizing force internal to living beings emerged in the last decades of the eighteenth century in biological thought. At the core of this vitalist strand of thought, Gailus maintains, lies a persistent emphasis on the dynamics of formation and deformation, and thus on an intrinsically aesthetic dimension of life. Forms of Life brings this older discourse into critical conversation with contemporary discussions of biopolitics and vitalism, while also developing a rich conception of life that highlights, rather than suppresses, its protean character. Gailus demonstrates that life unfolds in the open-ended interweaving of the myriad forms and modalities of biological, ethical, political, psychical, aesthetic, and biographical systems.

Preferential Trade Agreements and Cultural Products (Routledge Research in International Economic Law)

by Gilbert Gagné

This book discusses the treatment of cultural products within international trade law, focusing on preferential trade agreements.Trade and culture intersect when cultural products are involved. These mainly encompass cinema, broadcasting, music, videos, and publishing, either in traditional or digital formats. As such products reflect the cultural identities of states, they have led to a debate as to whether, or the extent to which, they should be exempted from trade obligations. With multilateral negotiations in gridlock, states have increasingly turned to preferential trade agreements. Concurrently, digital technologies have revolutionized how cultural contents are created and distributed. The book analyzes the provisions relating to cultural products within trade agreements, as well as their relationship with the provisions and guidelines on cultural goods and services under the UNESCO Convention on Cultural Diversity. Drawing comparisons between states as to the treatment of cultural products in preferential trade agreements and considering the norms and provisions relating to cultural products under different regimes, the book offers a truly comprehensive overview of the evolution of the trade and culture debate. The book will be of interest to researchers in the fields of cultural products, trade agreements, digital technology, trade law, and cultural diversity.

Der Fokus des Bandes wird somit um künstlerische und literarische Praktiken, die auf den virtuellen Hass reagieren, erweitert.

System Dynamics: Modeling, Simulation, and Response

by Osama Gad

System Dynamics: Modeling, Simulation, and Response covers linearity-based modeling techniques before delving into nonlinear systems. It compares the Bond Graph technique against traditional techniques (Newton's law, Kirchhoff's law, the law of the conservation of energy, and the heat transfer law).Presenting transient response analyses of first- and second-order systems subjected to various inputs, the book provides a thorough discussion of computational analyses of transient responses using MATLAB®/Simulink and 20-sim software. It introduces the Lagrangian method and its application in handling mechanical and electrical systems. The book reviews the classical method for solving differential equations and includes Laplace transforms. The book is intended for upper-level undergraduate mechanical and aerospace engineering students taking system dynamics courses.Instructors will be able to utilize a Solutions Manual and Figure Slides for their courses.

Muslim Perspectives on Islamophobia: From Misconceptions to Reason

by Zouhir Gabsi

The Islamic positioning of Islamophobia is presented in this book. Through ‘Islamic’ or ‘Muslim’ perspectives, the book engages with various Islamic texts and discourses (spoken and written) emanating from preachers and scholars of Islam to discuss the points of convergence and divergence with the Western interpretation of the phenomenon. The book aims to look at Islamophobia from a hitherto unexplored angle by first analyzing the points of convergence and divergence between the internal (Muslim) and external (Western) perspectives, and then by providing new approaches to curbing Islamophobia through a holistic spiritual dimension of Islam and cultural memory. The book contends that the bridges of understanding between the ‘East’ and the ‘West’ can only be built if some of Islam’s theological concepts, such as the place of reason in Islam, are reinterpreted by considering the Islamic perspectives. While the book acknowledges previous work on Islamophobia, it contributes to a deeper understanding of Islamophobia in its internal and external manifestations by considering the theoretical frameworks of racism and xenophobia. Readers interested in Islamic studies and anti-racism narratives would find this book’s eclectic approach and balanced perspective of the phenomenon informative and enlightening.

International Comparisons in Learning and Education: Eliasian Perspectives (Palgrave Studies on Norbert Elias)

by Norman Gabriel

This Open Access edited volume addresses the important role of education in society through the lens of theoretical concepts developed by Norbert Elias. This book sets out to challenge dominant perspectives within the sociology of education by reorientating traditional debates about socialisation, childhood, early years education, care, schooling and the curriculum, focusing on the relational learning processes that lie at the heart of pedagogic relationships between parents, teachers, children and peers. It also offers an innovative perspective on some of the key debates in childhood studies, bringing together and relating the different aspects of childhood through a generational lens. Authors from different countries follow young children as they grow up and learn how to become civilized in institutions in contemporary society, discussing how from one generation to the next they learn from adults and their peers an enormous social fund of knowledge about their world.

Sustainable Feed Ingredients and Additives for Aquaculture Farming: Perspectives from Africa and Asia (Sustainability Sciences in Asia and Africa)

by Ndakalimwe Naftal Gabriel Kenneth Prudence Abasubong Victoria Ndinelago Erasmus Manoj Tukaram Kamble

This book describes sustainable aquaculture ingredients and additives uncovered in Africa and Asia. It also discusses current aquaculture research practices on alternative protein, carbohydrate, lipid, mineral, vitamin, and feed additives. It further demonstrates how aquaculture practices could be a feasible and cost-effective venture, capable of producing products in an environmentally sustainable manner. The aquaculture industry is suffering from scarcity of sustainable feedstuffs, particularly protein and oil components, which play an important role in the nutritional requirements of many aquaculture species. The availability of components such as fish meal, fish oil, and other synthetic feed additives has rendered aquaculture operations unsustainable, particularly in terms of cost. Therefore, the quest to replace such unsustainable components is developing in Africa and Asia. This book helps aquaculture farmers, researchers, the aquafeed industry, investors, students, lawmakers, and other stakeholders in the aquaculture field to comprehend scientific-based sustainable feed ingredients and additives in aquaculture from an African and Asian viewpoint.
