Pretty Ugly

by Kirsty Gunn

Contradictions (both real and apparent), oppositions, enigmas, provocations, challenges——this is the kind of material that makes a life, and is the kind of material that, in fiction, one is never quite sure of. With Pretty Ugly, Kirsty Gunn reminds us again that she is a master of just such stuff, presenting ambiguity and complication as the essence of the storyteller's endeavour. The sheer force of life that Gunn is able to load these stories up with is both testament to her unrivalled skill and an exercise in what she describes as 'reading and writing ugly', in order to pursue the deeper truths that lie at the heart of both the human imagination and human rationality. So here we have all the strange and seemingly impossible dualities that make up real life——and pretty ugly it can be, as well as beautiful, hopeful, bleak, difficult, exhilarating. But never, ever dull.

The elementary structuring of patriarchy: Bolivian women and transborder mobilities in the Andes (Women on the Move)

by Menara Guizardi

Based on an ethnographic study on the Andean Tri-border (between Chile, Peru, and Bolivia), this volume addresses the experience of Aymara cross-border women from Bolivia employed in the rural valleys on the outskirts of Arica (Chile’s northernmost city). As protagonists of transborder mobility circuits, these women are intersectionally impacted by different forms of social vulnerability. With a feminist anthropological perspective, the book investigates how the boundaries of gender are constructed in the (multi)situated experience of these transborder women. By building a bridge between classical anthropological studies on kinship and contemporary debates on transnational and transborder mobility, the book invites us to rethink structuralist theoretical assertions on the elementary character of family alliances.

Top Ten Global Justice Law Review Articles 2007 (Terrorism: Documents of International and Local Control, Second Series)

by Amos N Guiora

Top Ten Global Justice Law Review Articles 2007 is a thorough and accessible review of the most salient, the most controversial, and the most illuminating essays on security law in the previous calendar year. In this edition, Professor Amos Guiora presents the ten most vital and pertinent law review articles from 2007 written by both scholars who have already gained international prominence as experts in security law as well as emerging voices in the security-law debate. These articles deal with issues of terrorism, security law, and the preservation of civil liberties in the post-9/11 world. The chosen selections derive not just from the high quality and expertise of the articles' authors, but equally from the wide diversity of legal issues addressed by those authors. Guiora combines the expertise of scholars from such accredited institutions as Harvard, Stanford, the U.S Military Academy and the U.S. Department of Defense to provide a valuable resource for scholars and experts researching this important subject area. This annual review provides researchers with more than just an authoritative discussion on the most prominent security debates of the day; it also educates researchers on new issues that have received far too little attention in the press and in academia. These expert scholars and leaders tackle and give voice to these issues that range from cyberterror to detention of suspected terrorists to France's tightening of its civil liberties policy to new restrictions on religious philanthropy and beyond. Together, the vast knowledge and independent viewpoints represented by these ten authors make this volume, of what will be an annual review within the Terrorism, 2nd Series, a valuable resource for individuals new to the realm of security law and for advanced researchers with a sophisticated understanding of the field. Top Ten Global Justice Law Review Articles 2007 serves as a one-stop guidebook on how both the U.S. and the world generally are currently waging the war on terror.

Architecture of Human Living Fascia: The Extracellular Matrix and Cells Revealed Through Endoscopy

by Jean Claude Guimberteau Colin Armstrong

This unique book illustrates the structure of the fascia in the living human being. Dr Guimberteau's photographs provide a detailed account of fascial architecture. He is the first person to publish video "movies" showing the structure of the fascia and how the fascia responds to it. The accompanying text explains what the photographs mean, clarifies the importance of the fascia, and sets out the implications of these findings for everyday therapeutic practice. This beautifully illustrated book provides an introduction to Dr Guimberteau's groundbreaking work. Based on what can be seen he has developed his own concept of the multifibrillar structural organisation of the body, wherein the "microvacuole" is the basic functional unit. His films confirm the continuity of fibres throughout the body thereby seeming to confirm the tensegrity theory, which provides the basis of many manual therapy and bodywork teachings. His work ties in with that of Donald Ingber on tensegrity within the cytoskeleton, and adds to the evidence linking the cytoskeleton to the extracellular matrix as described by James Oschman. The book provides, for the first time, an explanatory introduction and explanation of these theories. This material will be highly valued by osteopaths, massage therapists, chiropractors and others as it provides part of the scientific underpinning of their techniques, as well as an explanation of what is happening when they use those techniques to treat their clients. So Guimberteau's material confirms what manual therapists already believed but didn't fully understand. He has provided an explanation of how fascial layers slide over each other and how adjacent structures can move independently in different directions and at different speeds while maintaining the stability of the surrounding tissues.

An Inquiry into Women Representation in Management: A Case Study of Indian Industries (India Studies in Business and Economics)

by Samapti Guha Sanskruti Rajesh Kadam

This book explores the status of women representation in management in Indian industries. Recognizing that women managers are facing barriers in achieving top level of management positions in industries, it adopts unique methodology of involving men and women managers as respondents to understand the key issues of gender diversity, glass ceiling, glass walls, glass cliffs, and gender inequality in the Indian corporate scenario. The book, via its six chapters, explores these key issues through the lens of feminist theories under four dimensions – personal, work, organisational and social – and contains an extensive literature review to understand the root causes of these issues. Secondly, it discusses a pilot study conducted to understand the perspectives about career growth of women managers. Outcome of this pilot study works towards conceptualising factors under four dimensions, mentioned above, influencing women participation in management, and to develop survey tools for further quantitative study. Thirdly, for the empirical analysis, the book employs exploratory factor analysis (EFA) to identify factors under each of these four dimensions; and structure of the relationship between factors and women representation in management is confirmed by the confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). This book is beneficial for several stakeholders as it is a multidimensional study. It is useful for the undergraduate and post graduate students and research scholars of management, social sciences (such as economics, gender studies, psychology, political sciences, sociology etc), law, medicine, and engineering. Apart from this, it is also useful for corporate executives, decision makers of corporate governance, women elected representatives, administrators, development practitioners, teachers, legal experts, international agencies like UN who are working on women empowerment, and all those agencies working towards meeting SDG5 goal.

Knowledge, Power and Ignorance: The Indian Context

by Abhijit Guha Gorky Chakraborty Bidhan Kanti Das

What is knowledge, and ignorance? How is it decided? Do power and power relations influence this process? Does the spread of knowledge lead to more ignorance? Is ignorance socially produced? Is knowledge always socially contextualized? This book deals with these important questions on the interplay of knowledge, ignorance and power located in varied contexts in India. As systematic knowledge grows, so does the possibility of ignorance. Ignorance is a state which people attribute to others and is loaded with moral judgment. Thus, being underdeveloped often ‘implies a kind of stupidity or failure’. This volume seeks to be premised in a framework where ignorance is understood as being a socially produced and maintained phenomenon, where the ways of knowing and not knowing are interdependent. It is a novel attempt for an academic re-orientation of the Knowledge–Ignorance paradigm through a process of re-interpretation of the bounded purview attached with the existing epistemological understandings. It focuses on concrete case studies, often with an ethnographic stint. The volume critically looks at various aspects: Epistemological Issues; Understanding Community Perspectives and the State; Natural Resources, Power and Ignorance; Media and Production of Non-Knowledge; and other emerging areas. Each essay bears a striking similarity – that of understanding the complex processes and dynamics of the production of ignorance in a field of commonly held beliefs of 'knowledge' - be it scientific, societal, religious, magical or political - through the overarching realm of power. This interdisciplinary volume will be of interest to a cross-section of academics and students of sociology, social anthropology, political science, human geography, history, public policy and development studies.

Designing and Building Model RC Warships

by Glynn Guest

Warships are often appealing subjects for working models, especially if there is a personal or family connection with a vessel. However, models based on warships can have a reputation for being difficult to build and safely operate. This can be avoided if the idea of 'Stand-Off Scale' is used. This is where the model will have the appearance of the full-size when sailing, but is a practical working model boat. To successfully build this type of working boat and minimize the problems that might occur, it is important to have some understanding of how such ships work. With this in mind, this book not only details all the information needed to design, outfit and operate a model warship, but also supplies information about how the boats operate.
