Conference Interpreting: A Student’s Practice Book

by Andrew Gillies

Conference Interpreting: A Student’s Practice Book brings together a comprehensive compilation of tried and tested practical exercises which hone the sub-skills that make up successful conference interpreting. Unique in its exclusively practical focus, this book serves as a reference for students and teachers seeking to solve specific interpreting-related difficulties. By breaking down the necessary skills and linking these to the most relevant and effective exercises, students can target their areas of weakness and work more efficiently towards greater interpreting competence. This second edition includes a comprehensive update of the text, with new exercises and revised example speeches throughout, as well as three entirely new chapters on Activation, Voice and Early Simultaneous Exercises.Split into four Parts, this book includes a detailed introduction offering general principles for effective practice drawn from the author’s own extensive experience as an interpreter and interpreter-trainer. The second ‘language’ section covers language enhancement at this very high level, an area that standard language courses and textbooks are unable to deal with. The last two sections cover the key sub-skills needed to effectively handle the two components of conference interpreting: simultaneous and consecutive interpreting. This book is not language-specific and, as such, is an essential resource for all interpreting students, regardless of their language combination.

Conducting Contextual Research: How to Find Out About Yourself and Other People (Exploring the Environmental and Social Foundations of Human Behaviour)

by Bernard Guerin Eden Thain Kristen Stevens Adan C. Richards Guilherme Bergo Leugi

This innovative book proposes an entirely new approach to social research, presenting practical ways to discover people’s life contexts in order to understand why they do what they do, which is essential for any forms of research that need to understand people.Taking a novel approach that goes beyond traditional categorisations of qualitative and quantitative research, the book starts by discussing the real basis of all research methods in social relationships, before detailing the methods for finding out about a person’s life contexts in very practical terms, accompanied by suggested questions, advice, and research tricks to help you progress. The various life contexts are then worked through chapter by chapter. Drawing on the rich and varied research experiences of all the authors, examples are given throughout, with later chapters focusing on specific research areas.Conducting Contextual Research is essential reading for postgraduate students and professionals in the fields of counselling, psychology and social work, and will be useful to anyone conducting research or inquiries to understand human behaviour, including academic researchers, detectives, intelligence operators, social workers, government service researchers, social policy analysts, and biographers.

The Conditions of Unconditional Love (Isabel Dalhousie Novels #27)

by Alexander McCall Smith

'You can't go out of the house without tripping over a philosophical question.' That is a remark made by Isabel Dalhousie to Jamie, the bassoonist who is her handsome younger husband. Isabel's own life, of course, points to the truth of this observation: she seems to attract philosophical problems in much the same way as a magnet attracts iron filings. In this latest movement in the symphony of her life, Isabel is faced with novel challenges, each of which tests her resolution to do the right thing. Dawn, a nurse in an infectious diseases ward, is let down by her lover and needs a place to live. Not surprisingly, Isabel offers her a roof over her head. What do you do, though if your house-guest locks herself away and avoids all contact? And then there is the pompous and slippery Professor Robert Lettuce. He is planning a prestigious conference, and involves Isabel in it. But look at the budget: why is there such a large payment for Lettuce himself and for a young female assistant? Isabel is suspicious.Other intriguing problems abound, including Isabel's involvement in a book group threatened by discord and bickering. Isabel remains calm. Of course she does. She knows the power of love, reason, and a clear head to resolve all of these issues, and more.

Concrete Particulars: A Metaphysics of Spatiotemporal Entities (Routledge Studies in Metaphysics)

by Daniel Giberman

This book presents a novel metaphysics of concrete entities. The author uses the theory developed to address three major topics in the metaphysics of concreta: fundamentality, persistence over time, and phenomenal consciousness. The book provides a new theory of what “bundles” particular property instances, or tropes, into material property bearers. The theory is based on two new ideas. The first is that the primitive nature of one sui generis monadic property called markedness bears on the bundling of other properties’ tropes. The second idea is that the geometric and topological features of a given markedness trope help to determine which tropes it bundles. The author argues that this new markedness bundle theory determines all property co-instantiation at the levels of both type and token, positioning markedness tropes as the fundamental concreta. The theory also explains bundling across time, yielding an advantageous account of material persistence. Finally, markedness tropes operate as de facto panprotopsychist property instances: fundamental non-consciousness tropes that uniquely explain where and why consciousness properties are exemplified. The book solidifies the case for markedness through sustained critical analysis of competing theories of fundamentality and persistence, focusing in part on their inability to account for unending mereological and plural structures.Concrete Particulars will appeal to scholars and advanced students working in metaphysics and philosophy of mind.

Concise Introduction to Organization Theory: From Ontological Differences to Robust Identities (Elgar Concise Introductions)

by Joel Gehman Michael Lounsbury

Our Elgar Concise Introductions are inspiring and considered. They explain the key principles in business and are expertly written by some of the world’s leading scholars. The aims of the series are two-fold: to pinpoint essential concepts of business and management, and to offer insights that stimulate critical thinking. In this Concise Introduction, Michael Lounsbury and Joel Gehman set out an overview of organization theory that clarifies how to cultivate a robust scholarly identity in a field rich with diverse research traditions. Providing a summary of rationalist, pragmatic and co-constitutive theories, they highlight how scholars can meaningfully contribute to the academic conversation and maximize the practical relevance of their work.Key features:Provides a comparative analysis of different organization theoriesHelps scholars mindfully position themselves and their work within specific academic discussionsHighlights opportunities to bridge ontological differences by engaging in scholarly debates across theoretical categoriesThis Concise Introduction is a crucial reference point for organization scholars. It will also appeal to doctoral students and early-career scholars in management, strategy and entrepreneurship.

Concerning the Spiritual in Art

by Wassily Kandinsky

A seminal text in the history of modern art, from one of the most famous artists of the twentieth century‘Art is the language that speaks to the soul’Why do we make art? In Concerning the Spiritual in Art Wassily Kandinsky, one of the earliest and most famous abstract painters, argued against ‘art for art’s sake’. Exploring form and colour, spirituality and tradition, Kandinsky instead predicted a future for painting in its potential to redirect the attention of viewers away from the shallow materialism of the modern world toward the more profound intellectual and emotional concerns of their interior lives. His revolutionary work became a landmark in modern art history, helping to usher in the age of non-representational painting. This new translation also includes Kandinsky’s later essay, ‘The Question of Form’, in which he interrogates and sharpens many of his earlier ideas.A new translation by Ruth Ahmedzai KempWith an introduction by Lisa Florman

Concepts in Thermal Physics

An understanding of thermal physics is crucial to much of modern physics, chemistry and engineering. This book provides a modern introduction to the main principles that are foundational to thermal physics, thermodynamics and statistical mechanics. The key concepts are carefully presented in a clear way, and new ideas are illustrated with copious worked examples as well as a description of the historical background to their discovery. Applications are presented to subjects as diverse as stellar astrophysics, information and communication theory, condensed matter physics and climate change. Each chapter concludes with detailed exercises. The second edition of this popular textbook maintains the structure and lively style of the first edition but extends its coverage of thermodynamics and statistical mechanics to include several new topics, including osmosis, diffusion problems, Bayes theorem, radiative transfer, the Ising model and Monte Carlo methods. New examples and exercises have been added throughout.
