Translating Home in the Global South: Migration, Belonging, and Language Justice (ISSN)

Gómez Marlene Hansen EsplinThis collection explores the relationships between acts of translation and the movement of peoples across linguistic, cultural, and physical borders, centering the voices of migrant writers and translators in literatures and language cultures of the Global South.To offer a counterpoint to existing scholarship, this book examines translation practices as forms of both home-building and un-homing for communities in migration. Drawing on scholarship from translation studies as well as eco-criticism, decolonial thought, and gender studies, the book’s three parts critically reflect on different dimensions of the intersection of translation and migration in a diverse range of literary genres and media. Part I looks at self-translation, collaboration, and cocreation as modes of expression born out of displacement and exile. Part II considers radical strategies of literary translation and the threats and opportunities they bring in situations of detention and border policing. Part III looks ahead to the ways in which translation can act as a powerful means of fostering responsibility, solidarity, and community in building an inclusive, multilingual public sphere even in the face of climate crisis.This dynamic volume will be of particular interest to students and scholars in translation studies, migration and mobility studies, postcolonial studies, and comparative literature.
Anti-Scientific Americans: The Prevalence, Origins, and Political Consequences of Anti-Intellectualism in the US

It is the world’s fourth most populous country, with some 280 million people spread over 17,508 islands. Great diversity is seen in its culture; however, most of the people greatly value collectiveness or exhibit high sociability and solidarity, i.e., a communal culture. In the culture of business in Indonesia, relationships are absolutely essential as a basis of decision making, thus it is quite different than that found in the West. The ensuing daily complexities require intensive interaction, negotiation processes, and coordination. In this context, common theories and best practices that are generated on the basis of more simplified assumptions often fail. Systems science offers an approach that can take these issues into account and potentially overcome such complexities. This book defines a social system as a complex interconnected set of entities that organize the life of human beings and that are implemented through a process of shared experience and creative tension such that they demonstrate emergent characteristics. To elucidate this definition, the discussion in the book aims to bridge and integrate basic research founded in systems concepts, logic, theories, and models of systems practices and methodologies into a process of social systems research. That process involves engaging various stakeholders in academia, business, and government so that in collaboration they can solve common problems based on multidisciplinary approaches—ones that encompass hard and soft and quantitative and qualitative systems as well as negotiations and simulations. Auf der Basis qualitativer Interviews und Dokumentenrecherchen werden Ausmaß und Erscheinungsformen sexualisierter Gewalt im Bund der Pfadfinderinnen und Pfadfinder von 1976 – 2006 dargestellt. Aus einer sozialpsychologischen Perspektive werden die hohe subjektive Bedeutung und die enge Bindung von Kindern und Jugendlichen zu ihrer jeweiligen Pfadfindergruppe erklärt. Sexualisierte Gewalt erweist sich in diesem Kontext als Phänomen, das auf tradierten Hierarchien, informellen Machtasymmetrien und emotionalen Abhängigkeiten beruht. Junge Pfadfinderinnen und Pfadfinder waren mit dem Umgang mit entsprechenden (Verdachts-)fällen überfordert. Geblendet von eigenen Machbarkeitsvorstellungen ignorierten sie Betroffene und scheiterten mit ihren Versuchen, Täter nachhaltig unter Kontrolle zu bringen. Aus den in dieser Studie gewonnen Erkenntnissen werden Empfehlungen für Aufarbeitung und Prävention abgeleitet, die auch in anderen Jugendverbänden Anwendung finden können.
