International Trade, Resource Mobility and Adjustments in a Changing World: Essays in Memory of Ronald W. Jones (Contributions to Economics)

by Sugata Marjit Biswajit Mandal

This volume mainly focuses on the relevance and application of Heckscher-Ohlin Model and Specific Factors Model of trade, while also addressing other latest global issues which are connected with two most celebrated structures of trade models developed by the legendary trade theorist Prof. Ronald Winthrop Jones. The two models were published as 'The Structure of Simple General Equilibrium Models' (1965) and 'A Three Factor Model in Theory, Trade and History' (1971). Both the structures are used extensively by trade economists and development economists to decipher a bunch of interesting and intertwined ideas. The models being easy to follow, are capable of explaining some contemporary global concerns if modified judiciously. This includes both theory and policy in both competitive and imperfectly competitive markets. It also has some empirical dimensions. This book is a must read for those who want to keep abreast of latest frontiers in the domain of research on internationaltrade theory and policy, especially advanced graduate students, researchers, and policy makers in general. It exposes its readers to methodological techniques and contemporary research issues so that one can easily draw clues, in terms of both relevant techniques and future research directions, to carry on their own research; policy makers can understand the channels of possible welfare improvement owing to new policy changes.

Rebuilding Family Relations for Children and Youth Separated from Family

by Sarah Hean Vanessa Heaslip Jonathan Parker Pravin Tembjerg

This edited volume explores a range of causes for separation of children and young people from family, the impact of these causes, and methods that both professionals and families may employ to build or rebuild these relations. In particular, contributions focus on six high priority crises through which children and young people become either permanently or temporarily separated from their families: removal by child welfare services, migration, family breakdown, placement into institutional care, incarceration and/or the death of a parent. Authors emphasize the feelings of grief and loss experienced both by the child and their family whatever the separation context and the eventual impact on the young person ´s mental health. They conclude that reunification with the family is not always possible or desirable and permanent alternative sources of care and/or attachment may be required.  But if reunification is possible, it is a complex and a multidimensional pathway as children move from one care context to the next.  Innovation, coproduction with the birth family and tackling stigma and discrimination associated with family separations, is a high priority.

Ethics in the Zhuangzi: Dialogues on the State of the Field

by Xiangnong Hu Yong Huang

This book delves into a broad range of hitherto unresolved issues related to Zhuangzi’s ethics, which include, but are not limited to, the fundamental question of whether Zhuangzi should be regarded as a moralist in the ordinary sense and what Zhuangzi’s views on topics such as equality, moral relativism, good life, intersubjective relations, and social harmony really are. The twelve contributors to this book deliberate on these issues in six debates centering on recent influential publications in the field. In each debate, the relevant publications will be first challenged by their critic and then defended by their author, through which different and competing interpretations of Zhuangzi’s ethical themes will directly confront each other. These author-meets-critic debates will not only reflect what is currently at stake in discussing Zhuangzi’s ethics but also engage and enrich the state of the field today. This volume serves as a good companion to scholars, as well as graduate-level students, who are interested in gaining philosophical and ethical insights from Zhuangzi and Chinese philosophy in general.

De-neocolonizing Africa: Harnessing the Digital Frontier

by Unwana Samuel Akpan

This book fills a critical void in African research: a lack of engagement with the question of how digital capabilities can be harnessed to liberate Africa from the subtle grips of neocolonization. Bringing together seasoned and emerging scholars from diverse regions of Africa, the book dissects the intricate relationship between technology and the persistent echoes of colonial legacies. The authors distinguish between 'decolonization'—the historical struggle for independence—and the ongoing imperative of 'de-neocolonization,' an evolving battle against persistent but more subtle colonial influences, now manifesting in the digital terrain. With a focus on the profound impact of digital tools, the contributors question how these capabilities can serve as instruments of liberation in a globalized age. Through a comprehensive examination of the intersection between Africa, digital technology, and neocolonization, the book not only breaks new ground but also positions itself as an invaluable resource for students, academics, and professionals globally. By offering fresh perspectives, nuanced analyses, and innovative solutions, this book emerges as an essential addition to the global intellectual academe, reshaping the discourse on African autonomy, identity, and emancipation from neocolonial chains.

Heritage-Based Tools for the Sustainable Urban Development of Historic Centers: The Case Study of Gyumri in Armenia (SpringerBriefs in Applied Sciences and Technology)

by Mariacristina Giambruno Sonia Pistidda Nune Petrosyan

This book proposes a heritage-based approach for the sustainable urban development of the historic cities. The rapid growth of the cities, under the pressure of globalization processes and climate changes, implies deep transformations in their cultural asset, neglecting the role of urban heritage. Often urban planning instruments are not properly equipped with tools capable of managing the complexity of historic cities. The book fills a gap in the implementation of urban transformation, taking into consideration the urgency to protect sensitive and fragile parts of the historic city. The heritage-based tools are experimented with by using a unique case study in the Armenian context: the city of Gyumri and its historic center that, after the 1988 earthquake, suffered from a progressive degradation of its historical heritage. The book serves as a support for the implementation of the planning and regulation for the specific case study and as a methodological approach for planning the historic centers, replicable in other Armenian old cities and similar cities outside Armenia. It provides a framework for protecting the historic environment and buildings, as well as a tool for urban identity protection and a driver for economic development. The practical guidance also offers suggestions to inhabitants and technicians who must deal with the preservation of buildings and open spaces.

“And in Length of Days Understanding”: Essays on Archaeology in the Eastern Mediterranean and Beyond in Honor of Thomas E. Levy (Interdisciplinary Contributions to Archaeology)

by Erez Ben-Yosef Ian W. N. Jones

This two-volume book presents cutting-edge archaeological research, primarily as practiced in the Eastern Mediterranean region. These volumes’ key foci are inspired by the work of Thomas E. Levy. Volume 1 provides an in-depth look at new archaeological research in the southern Levant (primarily in modern Israel and Jordan) inspired by Levy’s commitment to understanding social, political, and economic processes in a long-term or “deep time” perspective. Volume 2 focuses on new research in several key areas of 21st century anthropological archaeology and archaeological science. Volume 1 is organized around two major themes: 1) the later prehistory of the southern Levant, or the Neolithic, Chalcolithic, and Bronze Age, and 2) new research in biblical archaeology, or the historical archaeology of the Iron Age. Each section contains a combination of new perspectives on key debates and studies introducing new research questions and directions. Volume 2 is organized aroundfive major themes: 1) the archaeology of the Faynan copper ore district of southern Jordan, a key region for archaeometallurgical research in West Asia where Levy conducted field research for over a decade, 2) new research in archaeometallurgy beyond the Faynan region, 3) marine and maritime archaeology, focusing on issues of trade and environmental change, 4) cyber-archaeology, an important 21st century field Levy conceived as “the marriage of archaeology, engineering, computer science, and the natural sciences,” and 5) key issues in anthropological archaeological theory. In addition to presenting the reader with an up-to-date view of research in each of these areas, the volume also has chapters exploring the connections between these themes, e.g. the maritime trade of metals and cyber-/digital archaeological approaches to metallurgy. The work contains contributions from both up-and-coming early career researchers and key established figures in their fields. This book is an essential reference for archaeologists and scholars in related disciplines working in the southern Levant and the Eastern Mediterranean.

Information in International Law: An Empirical Study (International Law and Economics)

by José M. Reis

Examining state behavior, this book sheds light on the often-overlooked role of information production and diffusion in international law and relations. Most theories of public international law and state behavior rely on a certain degree of international law-related information, such as an international legal ruling, being made public and diffused to reach various key actors such as third states or domestic actors. However, while assumptions about information being produced and diffused permeate international legal scholarly work, these assumptions have not been systematically and empirically evaluated. Based on an empirical analysis, the author challenges prevailing assumptions by systematically evaluating the accessibility and dissemination of crucial international law related information such as treaty negotiation documents or legal rulings. Using a variety of quantitative case studies on key stages of international lawmaking and covering various issue-areas, from human rights to trade law, each chapter traverses three critical levels of analysis, namely whether international law information is public and transparent, whether the information is salient and reaches the general public, and how the information is framed by the media and political elites. The book will appeal to students, researchers, and scholars of law, political science, and economics, as well as policy-makers interested in a better understanding of information production and diffusion in international law and the impact of public opinion on compliance with international law.

Challenging Medical Neutrality: Healthcare ethics in armed conflict and other complex settings (Military and Humanitarian Health Ethics)

by Daniel Messelken Ana Elisa Barbar

In this volume, the concept of "medical neutrality," which states that medical services should not be interfered with during armed conflicts and other emergencies, is challenged based on the experience and expertise of the authors, who come from diverse military, humanitarian, and academic backgrounds. The principle of medical neutrality is grounded in International Humanitarian Law as well as in Human Rights Law and it can be justified by ethical rationales such as the principle of Humanity and ordinary medical ethics. Health workers often understand medical neutrality as an obligation not to engage in anything else other than medical outcomes. In this book, a variety of problems and ethical issues in the application of medical neutrality in the professional practice of healthcare personnel are analyzed. The contributors expand the debate around “medical neutrality” and aim at better-informing policy and operational decisions regarding the application of medical ethics, the protection of medical missions in conflict, and the training of healthcare professionals to operate ethically and safely in volatile environments. The volume is of great interest to academics, practitioners, policymakers, and students who are looking for analyses and guidance regarding medical neutrality.

Fair Treatment of Persons in Police Custody

by Ralf Alleweldt

This book analyses and evaluates the international efforts to ensure the fair and human treatment of persons in police custody. Respecting the dignity of all detained persons, and in particular preventing torture, is a key issue of international human rights protection. The authors explore various approaches to tackle this issue, including the introduction of investigative, non-coercive interviewing techniques as well as the implementation of fundamental safeguards such as the access to a lawyer and a doctor. Supported by case studies, they describe the special role of national preventive mechanisms and the efforts to improve the treatment of detainees in the context of capacity building activities. Police components of international peace missions face special legal and practical human rights challenges. Authors also ask how the positive potentials and strengths within police organisations could be mobilised for realising human rights, and, last but not least, they seek to assess the prospects of how fair treatment of persons in police custody may be ensured in the future effectively.

Robotic Bin Picking for Potentially Tangled Objects (Springer Series in Advanced Manufacturing)

by Xinyi Zhang Yukiyasu Domae Weiwei Wan Kensuke Harada

This book introduces methods for bin picking in manufacturing. These methods can be used to develop unified, dexterous, and robust bin picking systems for entangled objects. The target objects include both rigid and deformable objects. Robotic bin picking is a valuable task in manufacturing, aiming to automate the assembly process by utilizing robots to pick necessary objects from disorganized bins. Previous studies have addressed various challenges related to bin picking. However, when objects with complex shapes or deformable properties are randomly placed in a bin, they tend to get entangled, making it difficult for the robot to pick up individual items. This poses challenges in perception, as the robot must be capable of distinguishing between isolated objects and potentially tangled ones in a cluttered environment. This book is of interest to students, researchers, and professionals in manufacturing industries.

Policing and Political Regime Transformation: Venezuela, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Ukraine from a Comparative Perspective

by Stiven Tremaria

This book offers a comprehensive study on the dynamics of policing under contexts of political regime transformation in the interplay between democratization and de-democratization through a cross-case comparative analysis among Venezuela, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Ukraine. The central concern lies in working out the intertwining between politics and policing by examining the development trajectories of democratic police reforms under scenarios of democratic stagnation, backsliding and autocratic consolidation. In particular, this book analyzes those changes experienced by the police as an institution, their powers and the practices for policing society in the framework of the endeavors for politicization, militarization and informalization of policing. This analysis is addressed from a macro-level actor-based approach, which accounts for the decisive role of ruling political actors and senior police managers as critical players who influence the decisions and patterns of political regime transformation and policing. Therefore, this book offers a groundbreaking study of the interrelationship among contemporary processes of de-democratization and police counter-reform from an actor-based perspective.

Young Latinx Shakespeares: Race, Justice, and Literary Appropriation (Reproducing Shakespeare)

by Jesus Montaño

This book delves into the aesthetics and processes by which Latinx writers and creatives artfully adapt and appropriate Shakespeare for young readers. Shakespeare, this book demonstrates, is reimagined with social justice in mind, yielding literary mestizadas (the critical term employed to highlight the palimpsestic nature of these admixtures). These literary mestizadas not only create representational mirrors in which Latinx young readers can better see themselves and their lived cultural experiences but also offer them the opportunity to contest the social injustices that impact them and their communities. In this, the book provides the critical framework for understanding how Latinx young adult appropriations of Shakespeare offer young readers educational ecologies in which to thoughtfully engage with issues of race, gender, and sexuality. By focusing on this productive literary interplay between Shakespeare and Latinx youth literatures, this book directs us to the generative and transformative potentials that unfold from these hybridized texts. Understanding Shakespeare and Latinx, not in their separate spheres but in the way they blend together to create new, important literary formulations embraces these brave(r) new worlds in which Latinx youth are affirmed and empowered.
