Geography from the Air (Routledge Revivals)

by F. Walker

First Published in 1953, Geography from the Air is the first book in English to explain and illustrate fully the use of air photographs in the study of geography. It sets out in simple form the limited amount of technical information which is necessary in order to enjoy fully the fascinating experience of training oneself to appreciate almost every aspect of the landscape shown on vertical air photographs. Thereafter the book consists of nearly 100 high quality air photographs, selected from almost every part of Britain, each of which is accompanied by a text describing in detail the features of general, as well as of geographical, interest which can be detected on the photographic prints. The photographs have been grouped into sections detailing with many aspects of physical and human geography, such as the influence of geology on landforms, river erosion and river development, glacial action, coast forms, the relationships between relief and settlement, the appearance of varying agricultural and industrial regions and the shape and character of towns and villages etc. Apart from the explanation of this new geographical technique the selection of photographs is such that this book should serve as a valuable source of illustrative material for the study of the geography of Britain and the systematic treatment of physical and human geography.

From Christianity to Spiritualism (Routledge Revivals)

by Charles Thomas Campion

First published in 1935, From Christianity to Spiritualism provides a critical overview of Christian faith in relation to spirituality. It discusses themes like religion and worldview; the Bible old and new; Jesus and Paul; from Jesus to Christ; and spiritualism and values. The author says that a great deal has been written by spiritualists about the Bible as being a book full of happenings which are evidently psychic, and which therefore provides support for the belief that spiritualism is true and valuable today as it undoubtedly was in Bible times. The tendency of critical theology has, of course, always been to diminish the miraculous or supernormal elements in the Bible, and spiritualist explanations have rendered that process easier and more thorough. This is an interesting read for students of religion.

Prosperity and Parenthood: A Study of Family Planning among the Victorian Middle Classes (Routledge Revivals)

by J A Banks

First Published in 1954, Prosperity and Parenthood is a study of Victorian middle-class ideas about the standard of living, marriage, and the responsibilities of family life. The book begins by tracing the fall in fertility in the 1870s to a change in the middle-class conception of parenthood and goes on to show that the standard of living considerably expanded during the period of great prosperity, roughly 1850 to 1870.The author also gives a detailed study of what the middle classes considered appropriate for a civilized existence and ends by considering the “Great Depression” as a possible factor attacking the actual level of living and making it possible for the middle classes to maintain established standards only by cutting down the size of their families. This is an important historical reference work for students and scholars of sociology, sociology of family, British sociology, social history, and medical sociology.

Recording Women: A Documentation of Six Theatre Productions (Routledge Revivals)

by Geraldine Cousin

First Published in 2000, Recording Women documents the work of three leading feminist theatre companies, Sphinx Theatre Company, Scarlett Theatre and Foresight Theatre, through a combination of interviews with theatre practitioners and detailed descriptions of productions in performance. Each of the six productions is innovative in content and style.Scarlett Theatre’s Paper Walls and Foresight Theatre’s Boadicea: The Red-Bellied Queen employ a skillful mixture of text, music, physical performance, humour and seriousness to explore, respectively, domestic abuse and rape (of women and community). Scarlett Theatre’s The Sisters and Sphinx’s Voyage in the Dark adapt existing texts. The sisters is a ritualized re-enactment of Chekhov’s Three Sisters in which only the female characters from the play appear. Voyage in the Dark uses film-noir-like theatrical effects and the insistent rhythms of the tango to evoke the rootlessness and sense of alienation that characterizes Jean Rhys’s novel. Slap (Foursight Theatre) and Goliath (Sphinx) are both one woman shows. Slap, performed by Naomi Cooke, explores images of motherhood, including lesbian motherhood and the concept of virgin birth. Goliath, performed by Nicola McAuliffe, is a dramatization, by Bryony Lavery, of Beatrix Campbell’s powerful study of the 1991 riots in Cardiff, Oxford and Tyneside. This is a must read for scholars and researchers of theatre studies.

The Spirit and Purpose of Geography (Routledge Revivals)

by S. W. Wooldridge W. G. East

First published in 1951, The Spirit and Purpose of Geography offers an introduction to the scope and spirit of geography. This undertakes a no less ambitious task than that of discovering the spatial relationships of the manifold features, physical and human, which diversify the Earth's surface. The authors one of whom first approached the subject from physical science, and the other from social science, co-operate to define and to discuss the historical development of their subject, its fundamental physical basis, its cartographic methods, its human aspect and its many applications and problems. Above all they submit that geography, the study of country or landscape, as a link study between the natural sciences and the humanities, constitutes not only a worthy academic discipline but also a part of a liberal education. This introductory volume is a must read for any student of geography.

Birth Control in Germany 1871-1933 (Routledge Revivals)

by James Woycke

First published in 1988, Birth Control in Germany deals in detail with the dissemination and acceptance of ideas of birth control from 1871 -1933 and shows the variety of methods that were in use-condoms, pessaries, diaphragms, caps and most notably abortion. In common with many western societies, Germany experienced a notable decline in the birth rate as it entered into the 20th century. Demographers differ in their explanation for such changes in the birth rate. Some argue that fluctuating birth rates reflect society’s efforts to match population and economy, while others argue that modern low levels can only be the result of radical innovations in popular behavior. The author argues that the latter can be shown to be the case in the German instance. He further says that attitudes quite similar to those found in liberal circles today were widespread among ordinary men and women in Germany, in contrast to, for example, the pro natalist ideologies dominant in France in the same period. This despite the regional, class and religious differentials which influence the German picture. The book amounts to an important study of the sexual politics of pre–Nazi Germany, and study in modernization of a traditional society. This is an important historical work for scholars and researchers of German history, women's studies, health & reproductive history, European history, and gender studies.

Exploring the Effects of Diet on the Development and Prognosis of Multiple Sclerosis (Nutritional Neurosciences)

by Hamdan Hamdan

This book offers an insightful exploration into the relationship between diet and Multiple Sclerosis (MS), aiming to address a crucial question: Can dietary interventions serve as effective preventative and therapeutic measures for patients with MS? Delving into this question, the book examines various nutritional components and regimens, shedding light on their potential impacts on the progression, relapse rate, and development of MS. It offers readers valuable insights into how dietary choices can influence the management of this condition. Backed up by evidence gathered from review and clinical trial papers, the book discusses the role of vitamins such as A, B, and D, as well as dietary supplements like caffeine, carnitine, and lipoic acid in benefiting patients with MS. Particular attention is given to the significance of vitamin D in lowering the risk of developing MS and its immunomodulatory effects on the inflammatory processes associated with the disease. In parallel, the book also addresses the detrimental effects of diets such as the Western or high salt diet (HSD) on MS prognosis, emphasizing how these dietary regimens can harm the gut microbiome and exacerbate inflammatory responses, ultimately promoting demyelination of the central nervous system (CNS). The book then explores alternative dietary approaches that confer a protective effect on the gut microbiome and the CNS, including whole grain, fasting, Mediterranean, and ketogenic diets. This comprehensive resource is an essential reading for patients with MS seeking to understand the potential impacts of diet on their overall health, as well as healthcare professionals and researchers interested in exploring dietary interventions for MS management.

Spiritual Care in Palliative Care: What it is and Why it Matters

by Megan C. Best

An international panel of experts have contributed to create the first comprehensive guide to spiritual care focussing on the palliative care setting from neonatal to aged care, combining the theoretical underpinnings of spirituality research with practical applications for its introduction into patient care. Sicher anlegen statt sparen: Vermögen aufbauen und mehrfach verdoppeln

by Werner Stubenrauch
