The Irish Convention: 1917-18 (Routledge Revivals)

by R. B. McDowell

Although largely regarded as a failure, the Irish Convention of 1917, might, had it been successful, have resulted in a totally different Ireland to the one which has emerged. It was an attempt to solve the apparently intractable Irish Question. This book, originally published in 1970, describes the debates which took place. These debates provide an anthology of Irish political thinking, and the committee proceedings offer interesting examples of negotiating techniques, Lloyd George intervening with consummate skill. The author concludes that the Convention may be dismissed as a failure, but that its work formed a stage in the evolution of the Irish settlement of the early 1920s.

The Myth That Will Not Die: The Formation of the National Government 1931 (Routledge Revivals)

by Humphry Berkeley

No figure in the Labour movement has attracted such extremes of emotion as has James Ramsay MacDonald. Loved and almost worshipped for more than 30 years, his formation of the National Government in August 1931 incurred hatred, bitterness and contempt from those whom he had led for so long. MacDonald’s career and the admiration and odium which it engendered is without parallel in British politics. Originally published in 1978, this book provides an answer to the charge that MacDonald deliberately betrayed the Labour movement by forming a coalition government with the Conservative and Liberal Parties. It examines the criticism that he ruthlessly proceeded to destroy the Labour Party in the General Election of October 1931 – an election which he pledged, only two months earlier, would not be held. Using the private papers and authorised (auto)biographies, and the Cabinet minutes of the day, this book reconstructs what really happened between August 1 and 24 1931, and accounts for the mercilessness with which he is remembered by the Labour Party.

The Inspector General: Sir Jeremiah Fitzpatrick and Social Reform, 1783-1802 (Routledge Revivals)

by Oliver MacDonagh

Sir Jeremiah Fitzpatrick (c.1740-1810) was the first inspector general of prisons and lunacy inspector in Ireland and the first and only inspector of health to HM land forces in Great Britain. He also inspected convict vessels bound for New South Wales and the East India Company‘s troop ships, inquired into the Irish Charter Schools and attempted to alleviate the miseries of soldiers’ dependents. His further ambitions ranged from a poor law for Ireland to a reorganisation of Dublin’s police, to the regulation of noxious trades, from slave trade inspectorates to hospital management. He was therefore in many ways a precursor of the titans of early and mid-Victorian government. Originally published in 1981, much of the interest of the book lies in its revelation of late eighteenth century anticipations of mid-nineteenth century government. It also explores the differences between the two forms of administration and the reasons for the divergences and discontinuities.

Malcolm Lowry (Routledge Revivals)

by Ronald Binns

Malcolm Lowry’s Under the Volcano is now recognized as one of the major novels of the 20th Century, whose breadth and experimental prose have influenced a wide range of contemporary writers. This study, originally published in 1984, considers the significance of the autobiographical elements in Lowry’s writing, in the context of his developing concern with fictionality and the romantic sensibility. It gives special attention to his exotic many-sided masterpiece and discusses the ways in which the narrative’s reflexive games-playing elements affect the representation of character, history, myth and magic. It surveys Lowry’s late experimental novels and stories and considers how their metafictional aspects anticipate some key interests of contemporary writing.

More Rules of Radiology

by Paul McCoubrie

Based on the social media success of my series of articles around ‘The Rules of Radiology’ this follows on from the first volume (‘The Rules of Radiology’), published in 2021. ‘More Rules of Radiology’ is the second and final volume that contains Rules 51-100. The Rules provide a guide to what radiology is and what radiologists do. Or rather what radiology should be and what radiologists should do. This book and its prior sister volume looks hard not just at radiology but also provides a distinctly wry look at the curious and occasionally alien world of hospital-based medical practice. I ask questions and poke fun but it is serious intent. My motto is ‘first make you laugh, then make you think’. Or, as George Bernard Shaw wrote, “My method is to take the utmost trouble to find the right thing to say, and then to say it with the utmost levity”. Each of the Rules addresses an important part of professional practice. I analyse the underpinning concepts of modern radiology, critically reflect on underlying assumptions, pose thoughtful questions and provide measured debate. All sprinkled with a mixture of weak jokes, puns and gratuitous word play. As a relatively young but rapidly expanding specialty, there has been no guide for radiologists, no moral compass. Until now. I provide opinions and guidance on key matters; sometimes controversial but always reasoned. The hope is to provide the reader with much food for thought. Not only that but this volume and its predecessor aim to provide a manifesto for radiologists across the globe to raise their game and serve their patients better.

The Learning and Teaching of Phonological Decoding in Chinese EFL Children

by Keren Hua

This book presents the learning and teaching of phonological decoding in Chinese EFL primary classrooms. The phonological decoding ability of the children is described, interpreted, and evaluated, the teaching materials are analyzed and the classroom instruction observed, and the links between these various facets are explored using both quantitative and qualitative techniques (textbook analysis, classroom observations, interviews with teachers and a textbook writer, reading test and nonword reading test). This book provides insights into Chinese children’s phonological decoding profile, including performance in decoding different types of orthographic units, the strategies children at different levels of reading ability use to sound out vowel graphemes, and their decoding ability in relation to reading ability. The investigation of the teaching practices reveals how the decoding instruction is designed, developed, and delivered to the children and thereby informs the interplay between the classroom instruction and children’s development of phonological decoding skills.

Psychotherapie von Essstörungen: Ein gendersensibles, integratives Behandlungsmodell (Integrative Modelle in Psychotherapie, Supervision und Beratung)

by Brigitte Schigl

Lefschetz Properties: Current and New Directions (Springer INdAM Series #59)

by Uwe Nagel Karim Adiprasito Roberta Di Gennaro Sara Faridi Satoshi Murai

The study of Lefschetz properties for Artinian algebras was motivated by the Lefschetz theory for projective manifolds. Recent developments have demonstrated important cases of the Lefschetz property beyond the original geometric settings, such as Coxeter groups or matroids. Furthermore, there are connections to other branches of mathematics, for example, commutative algebra, algebraic topology, and combinatorics. Important results in this area have been obtained by finding unexpected connections between apparently different topics. A conference in Cortona, Italy in September 2022 brought together researchers discussing recent developments and working on new problems related to the Lefschetz properties. The book will feature surveys on several aspects of the theory as well as articles on new results and open problems.

New Advancements in Geomorphological Research: Issues and Challenges in Quantitative Spatial Science (Geography of the Physical Environment)

by Jayanta Das Somenath Halder

There is an affirming transformation, basically in the form of core methodology, in recent geomorphological studies. This book on “New Advancement in Geomorphological Research: Issues and Challenges in Quantitative Spatial Science" asserts the contributing aspects of neo-modern developments related to applied geomorphology. This includes hydrological research, fluvial geomorphology, applied glacial geomorphology, changes in coastal geomorphology, regional to global level disaster and/or hazard monitoring with advanced models, landslide monitoring, geo-heritage site suitability, and bank and gully erosion detection. Contemporary developments in linking with the advanced developments in remote sensing and GIS, and with spatial science, in applied geomorphology and related sub-branches of earth science. Recently, global climate change phenomena (GCCP) impacted local to regional climatic events, resulting in sea-level rise, melting of glaciers, drastic river-course changes, the disappearance of the coastal area, and shrinkage of natural resources toss significant tests to sustaining human civilization. Meanwhile, modern monitoring technology and policy help-desk can support and minimize the present day's problems globally and also safeguard the natural environment's impending persistence in human society. So, this academic persuasion is a pioneer in minimizing the complications, like river course changes, glacier abolishment, geo-hazard crisis management, coastal area erosion management, geo-heritage conservation and management, and so on. Side by side, this present volume of the book caters a rational time-scale of the analyzed processes from mountain to coastal regions. And for better academic persuasion this will also incorporates the level of analysis, in the shape of `susceptibility' to `risk', with newly advanced methods. Therefore, appropriate cultivation of the knowledge of the application of GIScience for applied geomorphology and on the bigger aspect of the welfare of society and environment, and subjective nursing and administration can curtail the gap between science, policy, and the bottom-level scenario concerned. This current endeavor is also underlining the adaptation of hybrid techniques, remote sensing, statistical tools, and GIS technologies for the quantification of various issues related to several branches of applied geomorphology. This contributed piece includes focused and problem-oriented case studies to underline the versatility of changing geomorphological research, environmental resources, natural landscape, geo eco-system management, interconnected problems, and concerned applied vista at various spatiotemporal scales. The endorsed chapters, encircling both theoretical and applied aspects, help as guideline information for future research. Concisely, this book will offer traditional and advanced geospatial technologies used in earth science, atmospheric, lithospheric, hydrosphere, and biospheric contexts connected to applied geomorphology and for better management. This current book will be a commendable product from the belvedere of researchers, scientists, academic personnel, policymakers, advanced learners in advanced geoscience, earth science, applied geomorphology, remote sensing, environmental resources management, GIS, and hydrology.

Atlas of Ultrasound-Guided Central Venous Catheter Placement: Neonatal and Pediatric Approach

by Fernando Montes-Tapia

Central venous catheter (CVC) placement is the most frequently performed invasive procedure in pediatric and adult patients. The indications for a CVC include hemodynamic monitoring, administration of parenteral solutions, antibiotics, and parenteral nutrition, among others. The internal jugular, subclavian, and femoral veins are the most frequently used sites. Traditionally, vascular access is performed using anatomical guides; however, its effectiveness depends on the operator's expertise. The success of the anatomical guide procedure decreases as the patient's age and weight decrease or the patient has had previous catheterizations or abnormal anatomy. In addition, the risk of associated complications such as cervical hematomas, pneumothorax, cardiac tamponade, or deaths are reported when using this technique. Ultrasound-guided Central Venous Catheter Placement is recognized by the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (2002) and recommends ultrasound guidance as the preferred method for elective CVC insertion in adults and children. However, it has not yet become the standard due to a lack of training or adequate equipment (ultrasound). This innovative atlas intends to cover all the technical details of 11 types of vascular access in the pediatric age. It is richly illustrated with over 200 images. Atlas of Ultrasound-guided Central Venous Catheter Placement is a valuable book for medical professionals who perform vascular access in pediatric patients and a guide for anyone who wants to place an ultrasound-guided central venous catheter. It is a useful resource for pediatric surgeons, surgeons, anesthesiologists, pediatric emergency care, pediatric intensive care, neonatologists, pediatricians, and nurses.

Gödel's Incompleteness Theorems: A Guided Tour Through Kurt Gödel’s Historic Proof

by Dirk W. Hoffmann

In 1931, the mysterious-sounding article "On Formally Undecidable Propositions of Principia Mathematica and Related Systems I" shook the mathematical world. In this article, Kurt Gödel proved two incompleteness theorems that have fundamentally changed our view of mathematics. Gödel's theorems manifest that the concept of truth and the concept of provability cannot coincide. Since their discovery, the incompleteness theorems have attracted much attention, and a flood of articles and books have been devoted to their striking consequences. For good reasons, however, hardly any work deals with Gödel's article in its original form: His complex lines of thought described with meticulous precision, the many definitions and theorems, and the now largely outdated notation turn Gödel's historical masterpiece into a difficult read. This book explores Gödel's original proof in detail. All individual steps are carefully explained and illustrated with numerous examples. However, this book is more than just an annotated version of the historical article, as the proper understanding of Gödel's work requires a solid grasp of history. Thus, numerous excursions take the reader back to the beginning of the twentieth century. It was the time when mathematics experienced one of its greatest crises, when type theory and axiomatic set theory were taking shape, and Hilbert's formalistic logic and Brouwer's intuitionistic mathematics were openly confronting each other. This book is the revised translation of the second edition of the author's German language book "Die Gödel'schen Unvollständigkeitssätze".

Calibrated Engagement: Chronicles of Local Politics in the Heartland of Myanmar (Asian Anthropologies #17)

by Stéphen Huard

For decades, the heartland of Myanmar has been configured as a pacified space under military surveillance. A closer look reveals how politics is enacted at distance with the state. Calibrated Engagement weaves together ethnography and history to chronicle the transformation of rural politics in Anya, the dry lands of central Myanmar. The book presents situations as varied as local elections, inheritance transmissions, land conflicts and ceremonies, to show that politics is about how people calibrate the way they engage with each other.

Voices in the Dark: The Energy Lives of Refugees (Forced Migration #50)

by Sarah Rosenberg-Jansen

Humanitarianism is in crisis: refugee numbers increase every year and humanitarian agencies are struggling to meet the needs of displaced people. In refugee camps all over the world, refugees are forced to secure their own access to energy and are provided with limited cooking resources and minimal electricity. Voices in the Dark draws upon a decade of original research to provide evidence on the energy lives of refugees. Focusing on refugee camps in Rwanda and Kenya, the book identifies that urgent change is required within humanitarian responses to forced migration and the climate crisis to ensure that future energy provision in displacement settings is sustainable, reliable and affordable for refugees.

Echoes of Surrealism: Challenging Socialist Realism in East German Literature, 1945–1990

by Gerrit-Jan Berendse

For many artists and intellectuals in East Germany, daily life had an undeniably surreal aspect, from the numbing repetition of Communist Party jargon to the fear and paranoia engendered by the Stasi. Echoes of Surrealism surveys the ways in which a sense of the surreal infused literature and art across the lifespan of the GDR, focusing on individual authors, visual artists, directors, musicians, and other figures who have employed surrealist techniques in their work. It provides a new framework for understanding East German culture, exploring aesthetic practices that offered an alternative to rigid government policies and questioned and confronted the status quo.

Kubrick's Mitteleuropa: The Central European Imaginary in the Films of Stanley Kubrick

by Nathan Abrams Jeremi Szaniawski

Stanley Kubrick was arguably one of the most influential American directors of the post-World War II era, and his Central European Jewish heritage, though often overlooked, greatly influenced his oeuvre. Kubrick's Mitteleuropa explores this influence in ways that range from his work with Hungarian and Polish composers Bela Bartok, György Ligeti, and Krzysztof Penderecki to the visual inspiration of artists such as Egon Schiele, Gustav Klimt, and other central European Modernists. Beyond exploring the Mitteleuropa sensibility in Kubrick's films, the contributions in this volume also provide important commentary on the reception of his films in countries across Eastern Europe.

The Return of Polyandry: Kinship and Marriage in Central Tibet

by Heidi E. Fjeld

Tibet is known for its broad range of marriage practices, particularly polyandry, where two or more brothers share one wife. With economic development and massive Chinese social and political reforms, including new marriage laws prohibiting plural marriages, polyandry was expected to disappear from Tibetan social lives. This book takes as its starting point the surprising increase in polyandry in Panam valley from the 1980s. It explores married lives in polyandrous houses and develops a theory of a flexible kinship of potentiality through the lens of a farming village in Tibet Autonomous Region.

Rag Fair: A Different Migration History of London’s East End, 1780-1850 (Studies in British and Imperial History #10)

by Ole Münch

In the early Victorian age, the streets of East London were home to migrants from different regions and religions. In the midst of this area lay the famous Rag Fair street market, sustained by trade routes stretching across the globe. The market’s history demonstrates that it was not only a place of economic exchange, but also an intercultural contact zone where Jewish and Irish migrants mingled, entered client relationships and forged political alliances. Reconstructing the varied (partly multiethnic) group-building processes operating in the market, Rag Fair draws on approaches across migration history, economic history, economic anthropology and the sociology of political movements to uncover the social mechanisms at work in the old clothing trade.

Playing the Hand We Are Dealt: The Counterpoint of Fate and Freewill in Literature and Life

by Michael Jackson

The relationship between literature and life can be construed as a counterpoint of fate and freewill. Rather than equating fate to the ‘hand we are dealt’ which is reducible to the social or familial environments into which we are born, this book explores the idea of fate through the books that shape our lives and under whose influence we write. Writing in this sense is seen as beyond its utility of making meaning. It is a way of recovering agency in the face of overwhelming experiences. In juxtaposing factuality and fiction, the author makes a case for a radically empirical approach to human experience.

Star-Spangled Jesus: Leaving Christian Nationalism and Finding A True Faith

by April Ajoy

A hilarious and eye-opening account of leaving Christian Nationalism behind to follow Jesus better. April Ajoy wouldn&’t have called herself a Christian Nationalist when she performed her original song &“America Say Jesus&” on the Jim Bakker show, or when she participated in Jesus Marches across America, or when she posted cringe-worthy videos on YouTube to campaign for Mitt Romney. April just considered herself a good Christian: faithful, Republican, and determined to make America a Christian nation once again. But as her view of the world widened, Ajoy began to see cracks in her steadfast beliefs and recognized the ways her conservative politics and religion were intertwined in her mind. Did God really bless America? Is it actually by His red, white, and blue stripes that we are healed? Ajoy, content creator and podcast host, shares funny stories from her time deep within Christian nationalism, exploring how aspects of evangelical culture such as product boycotts, Satanic panic, and end-times theology have all been exploited to advance the Christian Nationalist narrative. She also illuminates the ways nationalist thinking has infiltrated our churches and political arenas, shaping not only modern evangelical culture but also American public policy and international relations. Part memoir, part guidebook, part call to action, Star-Spangled Jesus explores how the fight to make America a &“Christian nation&” has damaged us all and shows how one woman left Christian Nationalism and why America should too.
