Called and Queer: Lived religion and LGBTQ Methodist Clergy in South Africa (Palgrave Studies in Lived Religion and Societal Challenges)

by Megan Robertson

This book is the first in-depth study of the lived experiences of queer Christian clergy in an African context. Using a queer lived religion framing, it draws on ethnographic research to analyse how six LGBTQ clergy understand and practice their vocation in the Methodist Church of Southern Africa (MCSA). Seemingly marginalised in a denomination which maintains that marriage is only between one man and one woman, this book explores why LGBTQ clergy are motivated to live out their calling in the Church and how they make sense of their positions within it. In doing so, it looks beyond an analysis of a Church based on its official and doctrinal institutional positions on queer people and sexualities and, instead, uncovers the taken-for-granted ways that gender and sex are inscribed in ‘the way we do things around here’. This book is relevant to students and researchers in gender and sexuality studies, African religious studies, and sociology of religion.

The Microgenetic Method: Legacy of Bärbel Inhelder (SpringerBriefs in Psychology)

by Rebeca Puche-Navarro Julio César Ossa

One of the arguments that explain the relevance of this book is the overwhelming lack of knowledge that the current literature throws on the Inhelderian microgenetic method. The place of this method is definitely ungrateful and has remained incomprehensibly hidden. All indications are that it seems to have lagged behind many of the brightest heads in developmental psychology, those who made up the Geneva school. The book aims to illustrate how Inhelderian microgenesis emerges in the landscape of cognitive development as a new object of study. More than ruptures with respect to the problems of the normative subject, the Inhelderian project entails both conceptual and methodological displacements. In this new map, the psychological subject takes a predominant place, and does so in terms of the cognitive functioning of the subject in relation to situations of resolution. This functioning is studied on the basis of the microgenetic method, which makes it possible to identify the role of mental schemas, their combinations and recompositions in the face of specific and problematic situations. The totally original version of the microgenetic method that is delivered from the Inhelderian legacy in this book, not only recovers its basic sense but also advances in the direction of some indications that Inhelder herself had pointed out. This renewed object of study recovers a subject, with a status in terms of its own models, its theories and its dynamics. Starting from a demanding and knowledgeable reading of Inhelder's work. This knowledge becomes the best criterion to point out an updated path of the work with concepts and tools resulting from recent research but articulated with a microgenetic vision coming from the most orthodox tradition. The bet consists of advancing from the legacy of Inhelder and her team and projecting it as a methodological alternative for current research in developmental studies.

Knowledge as a Tale: A Discursive Space

by Rafal Maciag

This text describes the process that led to knowledge becoming the most important modern good and a complex phenomenon beginning at the end of the 19th century. It was a change in the way of understanding the world proposed by mathematics and geometry. This volume reveals how the paradigm shift, still in progress, is gradually transforming less obvious fields of science, such as the humanities and social sciences while affecting the phenomenon of knowledge. Firstly, meta-analysis gained importance, and secondly, it became natural to perceive knowledge in a social context, showing its diverse and multi-cause dispersion, leading to the phenomenon of knowledge. Due to the interpretation of knowledge as a complex social phenomenon, the author proposes a new model of knowledge description, called the theory of discursive space, making it possible to describe the role and meaning of knowledge as a component of modern civilization that is all-encompassing. This text appeals to students and researchers working in the philosophy of technology.

Soft Assets in Smart and Resilient City Development (Disaster Risk Reduction)

by Rajib Shaw Eiko Wataya

Over the past decade, building smarter, resilient cities is an established global trend in urban development, including developing countries. Unexpected external shocks, disasters and damage from climate change have major impacts on sustainable growth and well-being for citizens in today’s cities and requires comprehensive solutions. To deal with these negative events, cities predominantly invest in hard physical infrastructure, with less attention on non-physical soft assets which are intangible in nature and more difficult to quantify, but essential to achieve effective, balanced sustainable development. The value of soft assets can be substantial, and consistent implementation by cities can generate diverse value and be transformative for their urban development. For that purpose, cities need to establish an appropriate strategy, framework and structure to incorporate soft assets during the plan and implementation of hard infrastructure. This book argues that integrating soft assets in smart, resilient city development is critical to make the hard infrastructure work effectively and create value for cities. The literature review underlines that soft capital can be defined as: 1) human, 2) institutional, 3) external, 4) technology and information, and 5) social. The book also examines how soft assets can be effectively integrated into and create value for smart, resilient city development. Based on previous findings and original research, a unique approach is adopted through the verification of different city-level approaches using the concept of influential nodes, showcasing layered and composite value creation. The analysis addresses innovative implementation factors which enhance disaster resilience and the environment, which is particularly relevant for cities in developing countries. Drawing on previous research, in-depth reviews, new data, and case studies, the book provides new insights and specific policy and action measures to enhance the utilization of soft asset components in parallel with hard infrastructure in smart and resilient city in developing countries.

Living Longer and Healthier at Older Ages: A Longitudinal Analysis of Chinese Oldest Old’s Health and Its Determinants (Advances in Studies of Aging and Health #3)

by Li Zhang

This book analyzes data from eight waves (1998, 2000, 2002, 2005, 2008, 2011-12, 2014 and 2018) of the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Surveys (CLHLS) to explore how health status of the Chinese oldest old has changed over time and across birth cohorts. It also intends to investigate how period and birth cohorts have played a role in the associations between Chinese oldest old’s health and a variety of demographic, socioeconomic, and lifestyle factors. The book applies the age-period-cohort (APC) approach and constructs cross-classified random-effects models (CCREMs) to carry out the analyses. The oldest old’s health is measured by self-rated health (SRH), chronic diseases, cognitive function and subjective wellbeing which is indicated by positive and negative feeling scores. The results show that Chinese oldest old’s health status has changed over time and across birth cohorts. Significant period and cohort effects are shown when linking Chinese oldest old’s health to various demographic, socioeconomic and health lifestyle covariates. In general, period effects surpass the cohort effects. Particularly, the oldest old’s subjective wellbeing is more likely to be influenced by period than cohort effects. Period changes caused by social events, such as economic hardship and natural disasters, have left strong imprints on Chinese oldest old’s mental than physical health status. Based on these findings, the book highlights some important policy implications and points out future research directions to improve the current study. It provides an interesting read for researchers in gerontology and public health studies. It is also of interest to general audience, including practitioners in health care and policy makers who are interested in old age care and healthy aging policies.

On Leadership: Lessons for the 21st Century

by Tony Blair

Tony Blair's major new book on the art and science of leadership_______________________________'Engaging, insightful, provocative' Observer'A fascinating treatise on leadership . . . I am glad Blair has written it. It will fascinate anyone interested in the art of governing, even in the abstract' Nicola Sturgeon, Guardian'Filled with ideas and insight for every reader' i__________________________________Tony Blair learnt the precepts of governing the hard way: by leading a country for over ten years. In that time he came to understand that there are certain key characteristics of successful government that he wished he had known about when he started. Now he has written the manual on political leadership that he would have wanted when he first took office in 1997, sharing the insights he has gained from his personal experience and from observing other world leaders at first hand, both while he was prime minister and since, through his Institute’s work with political leaders and governments globally.Written in short, pithy chapters, packed with examples drawn from all forms of political systems from around the world, the book answers the key questions: How should a leader organise the centre of government and their office? How should they prioritise and develop the right plan and hire the right personnel, cope with unforeseen events and crises, and balance short-term wins with longterm structural change? What’s the best way to deal with an obstructive or inert bureaucracy, to attract investment, to reform healthcare or education, and to ensure security for the citizen? And how should governments harness the massive opportunities of the 21st-century technological revolution? This is a masterclass on leadership in general, and political leadership in particular, from a master statesman.

The Coming Storm: A Journey into the Heart of the Conspiracy Machine

by Gabriel Gatehouse

“Gabriel Gatehouse is a brilliant spelunker of the rabbit holes of American political culture. A spellbinding storyteller and reader of the runes of the strange times we live in.” – Louis TherouxIs this how democracy dies? The Coming Storm is Gabriel Gatehouse’s brilliant exploration of how conspiracy theories are tearing America apart. It’s a story that takes you down a rabbit hole - one that both the US as a nation and he as a journalist fell through - to unpack an epochal shift in political culture that starts in the earliest years of the Clinton administration and reached a crescendo on 6 January 2021 with the storming of the US Capitol. But that event wasn’t the wild finale of a chaotic Trump presidency many hoped for - it was only the beginning.A compelling mix of research and reportage, The Coming Storm gets under the skin of these conspiracy theories to show us a radical new kind of politics emerging, a movement that has coalesced around a loose alliance of tech bros, internet trolls and white supremacists. At a perilous moment in the history of American democracy, Gatehouse tells us some dark truths about our present, and provides clues about our future. The Coming Storm marks the debut of a major new voice in political journalism.

Hope I Get Old Before I Die: Why rock stars never retire, from the bestselling author of Abbey Road

by David Hepworth

'Reads like a series of rich, fast-paced and immensely funny short stories' The Oldie'Offers solid insights into the compulsions and drives that keep bands reforming' Sunday Times'Another triumph... Part whizz-bang storytelling, part social history, part forensic examination of an understudied phenomenon, the book is destined to become the go-to text on a subject we never thought we'd have to survey' Literary Review___________From the author of Abbey Road comes the story of how enduring rock icons like Pink Floyd, Bruce Springsteen and many more have remained in the ever changing music game. When Paul McCartney closed Live Aid in July 1985 we thought he was rock's Grand Old Man. He was forty-three years old.As the forty years since have shown he - and many others of his generation - were just getting started. This was the time when live performance took over from records. The big names of the 60s and 70s exploited the age of spectacle that Live Aid had ushered in to enjoy the longest lap of honour in the history of humanity, continuing to go strong long after everyone else had retired.Hence this is a story without precedent, a story in which Elton John plays a royal funeral, Mick Jagger gets a knighthood, Bob Dylan picks up the Nobel Prize, the Beatles become, if anything, bigger than the Beatles and it's beginning to look as though all of the above will, thanks to the march of technology, be playing Las Vegas for ever.___________Praise for David Hepworth'Such a clever writer' Spectator'Hepworth's writing is sublime' Daily Mail'A refreshingly independent thinker' Daily Telegraph'Hepworth's knowledge and understanding of rock history is prodigious' Sunday Times
