Radiation Oncology and Radiation Biology: The Next 100 Years

by Joel Greenberger

This book presents the fields of radiation oncology and radiation biology and projects the potential changes over the next 100 years. The first section describes the status of the medical specialty of radiation oncology and offers predictions for the evolution of the specialty over the next decades. The second section deals with the predictions of the future of radiation biology. This more comprehensive and detailed section deals with two major categories: space travel and the medical and physiological consequences of long-term exposure to space irradiation, and the late effects of ionizing irradiation on humans who have received therapeutic radiotherapy. Expanding use of high dose rate, small volume targeted stereotactic radiosurgery, and stereotactic ablative radiosurgery is expected to increase the numbers of long-term surviving patients. The medical, physiological, and radiobiological consequences of radiation late effect is described in detail. The current novel techniques of radiotherapy including FLASH irradiation, high LET particle irradiation, and novel strategies for a theranostics (combined radiographic diagnosis of metastatic deposits, and delivery of therapeutic radiation) are described, as well as the use of clinical radioisotopes in cancer therapy. This is an ideal guide for radiation oncologists and trainees who are particularly interested in where the field will progress over the next 100 years.

Interconnection Networks (The Morgan Kaufmann Series in Computer Architecture and Design)

by Jose Duato Sudhakar Yalamanchili Lionel Ni

The performance of most digital systems today is limited by their communication or interconnection, not by their logic or memory. As designers strive to make more efficient use of scarce interconnection bandwidth, interconnection networks are emerging as a nearly universal solution to the system-level communication problems for modern digital systems. Interconnection networks have become pervasive in their traditional application as processor-memory and processor-processor interconnect. Point-to-point interconnection networks have replaced buses in an ever widening range of applications that include on-chip interconnect, switches and routers, and I/O systems. In this book, the authors present in a structured way the basic underlying concepts of most interconnection networks and provide representative solutions that have been implemented in the industry or proposed in the research literature.* Gives a coherent, comprehensive treatment of the entire field* Presents a formal statement of the basic concepts, alternative design choices, and design trade-offs* Provides thorough classifications, clear descriptions, accurate definitions, and unified views to structure the knowledge on interconnection networks* Focuses on issues critical to designers

The Rise of the Mediocracy (Routledge Revivals)

by David Tribe

First published in 1975, The Rise of the Mediocracy is exhaustive, disturbing, devastating, yet often very funny. It explodes the myth of meritocracy and the pretence of improved living standards. While the doom- boomers blame all our ills on trigger happy politicians, Arab oil sheikhs or polluting multinational corporations, the intractable problems of the world have come about through a multiplication of individual attitudes and actions whose end result is industrial anarchy, civil disorders, population explosion and declining standards. Many of the ‘good things’ of life- democracy, education, sociology, communications, growth, the welfare state- have contributed to the overall neurosis, trivialization and greed. As these good things will not likely be abandoned, the problems of contemporary society may well be insoluble. But if there are solutions they are unlikely to be implemented because everywhere there is an elitism not of meritocracy but of mediocracy, whose rise can be traced from the 18th century and has accelerated in recent years. No other book relates the discrediting of religion and politics, business and professions so plausibly to chaos in the arts, diminishing returns in education and curbless crime in society. This interdisciplinary book is an interesting read for students of humanities and social sciences.

The West Indies: The Federal Negotiations (Routledge Revivals)

by John Mordecai

First Published in 1968, The West Indies is the history of Federation in the British West Indies since 1920’s, in itself a fascinating story full of strong and colorful personalities; at the same time, it offers an incisive analysis of the reasons why Federations have proved so unstable in the post war world. It is unusual to have the story from a man who was both without any narrow allegiance and at the centre of events from 1952 up to the very end. Sir John Mordecai was in daily contact throughout with the leading figures and the crisis surrounding them. He served as Secretary General of the West Indies Regional Economic Committee which prepared the organic structure for political union and as Federal Secretary and chief official when parliamentary government and the Council of Ministers took control in 1958.His work brings into focus the local agitation after two world wars, the great island leaders who strode the scene as apostles of Federation, the years of strenuous negotiations and compromise leading to the creation of the Federation in 1958, the events culminating in its collapse after four fractious years, and finally, the bleak predicament in which the islands and their leaders found themselves when the dream of generations lay shattered. This exciting book is a must read for anyone interested in the history of the West Indies.

Sustainable Development Goals and Urban Health: Strides, Challenges and Way Forward for Poor Neighborhoods (Sustainable Development Goals Series)

by Abraham R. Matamanda Verna Nel

The main aim of this book is to understand the interplay between the SDGs and urban health. This is a critical issue in cities, considering the complexity of health issues and how they transcend most SDGs. However, the SDGs are premised on a broad set of generalised indicators and targets. Simultaneously, local contexts differ; thus, a one-size-fits-all understanding of urban health problems is not helpful. Therefore, the SDGs require Health in All Policies (HiAP) – “an approach to public policy across sectors that systematically takes into account the health implications of decisions, seeks synergies and avoids harmful health impacts to improve population health and health equity” (Ramirez-Rubio et al. 2019). In applying the HiAP concept, this book adopts a case study approach and considers the poor neighborhoods of a South African city, specifically Bloemfontein, part of the Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality. Each chapter presented in the book considers a particular SDG and how that goal relates to urban health.
